Road Cycling Essentials

Rode yesterday and it was very hard work; needed a lot of concentration and upper body to avoid losing the back end through the snow in Richmond Park. I was still shattered when I got up this morning so took the train and now I'm regretting it with some fat biffa encroaching on my seat, train delayed, etc.

Back on the bike tomorrow.

I've left the bike at home this week, simply because last week I came off twice on ice patches, and I'm off for 4 weeks of climbing and diving and I don't want to injure myself. And knowing my luck I'd break something!

I've got time off till first week of January as of last Friday so no cycling for me. I think I only cycled once last week, rest of the times I got a lift or got a train in just in case I hit a nasty patch of ice.

Still no rims :(

I was cycling up until last week when I finished for Christmas. I got the tram one day but it was so unbearable I couldn't face it again :p

I cleaned the salt off my bike a few days ago and it was literally caked on and is like some kind of black sticky salty batter. Should have hosed it all off really because it has already corroded the hell out of my seatpost, but it was just too cold. I see a complete bike rebuild in the new year.

I was forced to take the tram this morning, fortunately with the kids off school it was reasonably quiet and therefore more tolerable than usual. I had hoped to cycle in today, but when I got my bike out of the garage I discovered that the back tyre was flat, and I didn't have enough time to fix it. I also hadn't left myself enough time to walk to work, so the tram was the only option. I hate the tram :(

Do you work in Croydon, Jonny69?

Well, the girl was happy with her 531 framed Mixte, which is a relief. Wasn't sure how much trouble I'd get in for that as a Christmas present but she seems to really like it. Now I've just got to dress it up with some go faster goodies. Question is, do I rape one of my other bikes for parts (the sensible option) or get some new bits in...

Had my first fall today on my roadie :(

Coming down a hill on the approach to a roundabout, im planning on turning right...i look to my right and its clear and as such i enter the RA. Only to see a ****nugget in a punto enter the RA from the 1st entrance without looking to his right (ie where im approaching from). He finally sees me and emergency breaks and stops about 5foot into the RA. I hit the front brake but its not stopping me, grab the rear and....i go down on my side with the bike pirouetting under me and away from the now stationary car.

Needless to say i went absolutely ape**** at the muppet in the car once i'd gathered my thoughts and peeled myself off the road. He just sat there in his metal cacoon and finally drove off. Bike has gotten away unscathed and i've got a bruised palm of hand, bruised ribs and bruised elbow. I was probably doing 15mph went i went down on my side....had i not got down i'd have T-Boned the side of the punto and i suspect i wouldn't have gotten away so lightly!

I was going to report it to the police but i figure more hassle than its worth, my word against his etc etc. Im now looking at a helmet cam!

I'm currently looking at buying a really serious road bike after spending the year just gone on a Cube Peloton which is basically Shimano Tiagra gear, about 9.2kg's.

I've come across this which has Dura Ace shifters\mechs and Ultegra Cassette\Chain, all for under 2k. Do you guys think this is the best deal I can get?

I'm probably willing to go as far as 2.5k but under 2k would be preferable. Suggestions for any makes\models are welcome. :)

For 2 grand I'd want to ride half the bikes in the shop to get a good idea of what I'm buying. Does look like a good spec though and if you already ride a Cube then there's probably a chance it'll be similar geometry. Would definitely want some bum on seat time first.

Also signed up for the dragon. Last did it in 08 and enjoyed it a lot. Seems a shame not to go into the beacons this year but should be a good route nonetheless. Hope the weather is good.

Cheers Shmo. :)

Anyone with any knowledge of Orbea sizing here? First delve into the roadie world...

I'm 6'0" with a 31.5" inseam so recently ordered a 57cm Orbea Onix T105 online (2010 - reduced to £995 to clear) but I'm a little concerned that the frame may be too large.

The general consensus on other forums seems to be that Orbea's frames are bigger than equivalent sizes on other brands - I haven't received the bike yet so haven't tested it ...

Obviously if its too large I'll just need to return it but it'd be a shame :(
