Did the 50 miles round trip to the monthly jumble sale today and got an absolute bargain. Brand new with tags Castelli Compatto Lite jacket. Haggled the chap from £20 down to £10.

Got in googled it and it's.... £145 on Wiggle/Evans

Git!! I've been looking at them!! Deal of the century! :D

Where was this at?

Got to be stolen at that sort of price! Why would you ever sell something for less than you paid, within reason?

BlackDragon you will need about 3 tools to get that bottom bracket moving. An 8mm allen key to remove the crank bolt, a crank puller to take the cranks off the BB and a spined BB tool to remove the BB itself.

If it is moving the way you describe then I'd get it nipped up ASAP before you damage the threads. The play should be on the bearings within those splines you can see. I had a bike today where it was creaking and it was literally not even hand tight in the frame.

There are cheaper ones out there just make sure they are for Square taper not ISIS or Octalink.

It's run by a single charity so isn't really a jumble sale in the true sense. Also nothing is priced so the volunteers make a best guess and the prices quoted vary wildly depending on who you ask and if their brand aware or not.

All the stuff is donated and appears to be a mixture of: customer returns, last seasons, shop soiled, damaged, odd pairs ie 2 left gloves. etc. You have to root through the tat to find the gems. etc.

I got my magicshine clone + wide angle lens, i see what you guy mean about the strob effect lol. Seems pretty decent though appart from that.

Thanks for the advice. If the threads are damaged, will that mean a new bottom bracket then?

I'll order the tools and see how I get on!

It's a happy coincidence. The tyres are Challenge Grifo XS open tubulars and the white is the snow / ice compound.

Given its a white bike and now has white tyres white guards for winter commuting are the only way forwards...

It probably won't be damaged but I have saw two frames with totally smooth shells due to it though.

For square taper you can get threadless BBs that would do the job for a bit but can be a bit of a pain to get right.

I'm trying to decide between two bikes but I don't know if there's enough of a difference to warrant an extra £100. Should I stick with the standard Sirrus and spend the rest on gear or get the Sport?

I don't think there is much in it really, I'd go for the cheapest and put the money on gear. Are they the 2012 models? I think Specialized have managed to increase prices and reduce specs for 2013.

Out of interest, have you considered a road bike instead of a hybrid? Those hybrids have gearing for the Alps which is overkill in London and drop bars are great for getting low when cycling into head winds.

The BTwin Triban 3 can be had for £300 or maybe you can find a deal on a 2012 Allez.

any reason a hybrid?
the sport gives you an extra gear and that's about it?
I'd be tempted to poney up the extra £100 for this

hell for another £150 or so you could get a ribble!

I think most people here will agree that 2nd hand is better at that price point and anythings better than a hybrid!
