Road Cycling Essentials

I ride carbon through winter, in fact there is pretty much no steel on my bike which makes it ideal for winter riding, all my bolts/screws/collars are now ti, alu or nylon, cables are all teflon coated, all non drive train parts are carbon, and I use a cheapish 105 steel cassette (which is identical to the ultegra version) that I can replace at a reasonable price and its only 50g heaver than the exotic ti ones.

i think your missing the point of a winter bike which to most sensible people means cheap but decent quality, full mudguard clearence and delibretly heavier than your good bike so that you feel a massive boost when you go back to your good bike in the summer.

It's got crud roadracers on it, I think everyone else misses the point tbh, I didn't get a nice bike to only ride it 6 months of the year, I ride my nice bike all the time.

I do have a crapper bike with 28c tyres for when there its a very hard frost but that's about it.

exactly! i got my bike to ride it :) not for it to sit in a room when the roads are poopy and components wear quicker! :)

Life would be boring if everyone thought the same and did the same!

Personally, riding my good bike feels like more of a special occasion and something to look forward to having ridden my commuter for 6 days of the week.

i love riding mine! :D but then again i still enjoy taking my bmx out for a spin, i know i won't get bored of cycling any time soon! :D well doing 5 days a week might get boring after a while, but i can always change the route a bit! :)

The only thing that makes my commute not boring is strava.. so good bike it is. I have my motorbike for a bit of a treat if its a nice weekend anyway.

Anyone got or tried the Pro Lite Bracciano? £299 ish at the moment.

I'm looking for wheels as per a previous post, £300-350 budget.

Also thinking of RS80's or Fulcrum 3's (both new) or 2nd hand 7850 Dura Ace or American Classic 420 Aero 3.

They're about £22 on Amazon I think so will buy from there.

Going to a sale at Raleigh tomorrow and one of those jumble sales mentioned earlier in the thread on Sunday, hope to pick up some bargains.

To me, it's all about the boost you get when you switch back to the lightweight bike in the spring. It's similar to altitude training that pros (of most sports) do, you're intentionally making things harder for yourself so that when you return to normal, it should be easier in relative terms.

For guys like eXist, who cycle a lot and might be racing in spring, that little boost can really make a big difference.
For people who are newer to cycling and are still trying to build up mileage, the only benefit of a winter bike would be to keep your nice bike clean, which isnt a problem if you take good care of it.

I have the Bracciano, they are not great they are light but also flexy if i put the the power right down or go over a bump i a noise from the wheel which i interpret as flex,

Nice, where is the jumble sale? I remember I'm quite local to you, report back how good it was.

I'm looking for a new front light, but without strapping cables and a battery to the bike.

Has anyone seen or have an opinion on the BBB Strike 500? £76 with and extra 10% off. http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/ro...trike-500-rechargeable-head-light/bbbaligh215
