Finally got round to putting the Conti 4 seasons on to replace my PR3s - got a puncture last week from a small flint wearing its way through my tread :(

Will try and commute in tomorrow. I'm interested to see what the ride is like compared to a racier tyre!

Well my first impressions of 25mm tyres are positive. Much smoother ride and even seem to soak up the bad bumps a bit more effectively. Slight tread and less sticky but I didn't notice any loss of grip over a slick, but then I'm not cornering right on the limit. Here's to hoping the puncture resistance is as good as the rest of the experience :)

no option for me, i hate contacts and laser eye surgery just means i stil have to wear glasses as im really bad

I'm a glasses wearer too and I use OTG ski goggles if it's sunny (these) or clear ones (these) if it's dull/night time.

Neither of them fog up and great down to below freezing temps.

I'm contemplating printing this out, having it framed, and hanging it on the wall in the office. I recall the look of disgust you gave my Pompetamine's 32mm tyres, and the gleam of joy in your eyes when you told me your tyres were 20mm.

Next you'll be telling me you have a jacket that you don't need to fasten with a safety pin!

I don't think my Ribble will take the crud guards and 25 tyres, guards or 25 is choice for me!

Confirmed. I've managed to fit a SK Raceblade to my rear wheel, but cannot fit anything to the front wheel. Given that this is where the majority of water will come from onto myself and the working parts of the bike, I need to find a solution!

Had my first proper ride yesterday. When I say proper I mean not for commute and just for fun!

Really enjoyed it.

Learnt a few lessons :

My Planet X gloves aren't waterproof
I should have worn my overshoes
Don't EVER go out without checking innertubes are the correct size!
My cheap Cree Ebay light doesn't work in the rain.

Got a puncture around 3 miles from home in the rain, ended up riding home on a flat which may have damaged my tire but I was wet, cold and tired!

With regards to the Ebay clone lights, how have people waterproofed the battery and the lead connector? I assume that getting wet was the reason my light no longer works.

Yeah that does sound like a much better route. I was aiming to get through leek as quickly as possible as we were thinking of going up to Flash and then cutting back around to Heaton and Rudyard.

When we got to the Three Horse Shoes we decided to turn off and only go for the 25 mile route. It was my first time on a bit of a distance and my friend drove down from Wilmslow and it only used to riding on the flat so taking up to the edge of the Peak District was quite a shock for him!

The route around Heaton was lovely, can't wait to go back when it's not raining and so windy. Only discovered that area this summer as I got married there in July, didn't even know it existed before that!

Follow me on strava if you don't mind, I'd like some ideas for routes around here being new to this.

Me and my friend are taking it in turns with our routes. Going to be doing one week from his in Wilmslow then one from Stoke alternatively.

Edit : I must add the guy at the Black horse pub in Endon was great. We wanted a coffee and he let us in before the pub had even opened as he felt sorry for us being so wet and cold then gave us both a free drink!

Zooming on that map with my iPad is a bit of a nightmare so ill have a look when I get home tonight. I guess it goes through Stanley or Bagnall? Hadn't considered that for some strange reason, the idea of having to do 10 miles to get to leek to get into the countryside was a bit annoying. Especially with me starting off with 25-30 mile runs.

Is that website what you use to sort your routes? I was using google maps at the weekend.

Amazed at the battery on my Galaxy S3 too. After 2.5 hours tracking with GPS it only used 12% battery!

Yep that's right, goes through Stanley and Bagnall. And it limits the time you need to spend on the more main roads.

I use the site if I want to try a new route or go somewhere slightly different. Useful little tool :) If I can remember the route, then great. But if not ill map the same route on Garmin connect and put it onto my GPS.
