Well that's the BB decided on, should be an easy job once I get those damned crank arms off. Bolts are undone but my god it needs some pursuading.

I've got 105 front and rear derailurs with some Tiagra shifters. I'm thinking about just stripping the frame totally and having it painted/coated as its flaking off in a few places now. Seems a shame to do all this work and it look like it's off the Mad Max 2 set! Thanks for the help guys :)

I would try to find a matching chainset.

Shimano BBs are good, nothing at all wrong with Hope though.

The Hope is servicable which I like the appeal of. Especially if this becomes a winter bike. I fancy mytslef a carbon summer bike if work allow me to use their scheme. There's a shop opened in my village called Beacon Fell too, they sell their own branded bikes which seem to taking off.

Would I be able to use caged bearings instead of loose?

140 miles of cycling this week. I'm really tempted to pop out tonight to get in 10 more miles just to hit 150 :p Sadly I'm pretty knackered from the 19 miles already and two hours of beefcake :/ I'm sure these beers are helping though.

Yes, you can used caged but there are half as many bearings.
Loose is better but can be fiddly to install.

Good workshop grease such as park or Shimano should stick them in place as you bring the fork up.
If you use loose balls, leave a 1 ball gap to allow everything to move freely.

Good effort! Especially good effort considering the weather.

Tbh it has been made up of lots of tiny rides rather than any single impressive one. I just try to fit in as much as I can here and there. Hopefully I can get some decent rides organised in the next couple of weeks.

Coming up to a roundabout today where due to the hedge you can only see at most one car length of the road to the right (so no idea if a car is approaching) and I had a car appear right as I was about to enter the roundabout. In an effort to not get run over I could feel wheels locking under me and and as I came to a stop rear wheel ended up a few inches in the air.

And who says rim brakes aren't good enough lol, couldn't have stopped any quicker without more traction.

Tried the fulcrums out today, and although a bit all over the place with the winds from what I could tell they were quite nice compared to my old wheels. Bit hard to get a good feel for them with all the wind around, but with the help of a tailwind I was doing 30mph on the flat at one point :D Just need a ride without 25mph winds to see how they feel.

Good effort, well done. Now do that every week and you'll be faster in no time.

Hit a patch off ice at the end of my road this morning and came off - did the remaining 11 miles with a very tender wrist :/

Hope I've not done anything major, may end up getting the train home. Bloody winter!

Ice free on the roads this morning aside from one junction that was inexplicably like an ice rink near Levenshulme, would definitely have caught me out on the bike. Hope your wrist is OK.

I've flipped over the bars a few times.. rim brakes are good in dry not in wet

Away from the office today so haven't commuted by bike, friend of mine who did said it was very icy out there though.

Suppose we have been lucky with the 'mild' (ignoring all the wind) weather recently.

I've stacked it on ice once this January in Richmond Park.

Since my fall on a roundabout, also in RP, I've never regained my confidence for cornering in the wet. I keep worrying I'll fall descending Broomfield when it's moist!

I'm slightly disgusted in myself. Not been on my bike since around September :(

Can anyone recommend somewhere to drive to for a decent full day out. I'm in Staffordshire but don't mind driving 2-3 hours.

I'm thinking lakes, quiet roads finished off with a beer in the village pub.

We went to Bala Lake last summer and it was absolutely brilliant.

I'd just ride from home into the Peaks rather than spend 4 hours or more on a round trip driving somewhere to ride.

Last summer, I rode from home, through Stoke and over to near Ashbourne (Strava ride) and the next day did a 100km loop (Strava). The cafe in Longnor was great.

That's is my normal kind of ride. Heading up into Leek, towards Buxton, Rushton Spencer, Rudyard etc.

Actually that map has just reminded how much I want to head towards Bakewell and that way.

I'm from Leek. How far do you have to ride to get to Leek?

From Leek you're at the gateway to the peaks.

Leek -> Thornecliffe -> Longnor -> Bakewell -> Cafe stop in Bakewell
Bakewell -> Youlgreave -> Hartington -> Oncote -> And then back.

Leek -> Meerbrook -> Gun Hill -> Winkle -> Macclesfield -> Cafe stop in Macc -> Then back along the flats maybe?

It all depends where you're coming from.
