Road Cycling Essentials

I've never even used it. I just upload straight to strava. I also upload to ridewithgps, but I'm not sure why. I sorta like being able to match rides with routes, but I've not made much use of that. They're trying to go a bit strava as well with challenges and segments as well. Meanwhile, strava are getting into route planning...

Garmin software in the main is pretty poor for the older devices, but when you get to the newer ones that don't need to plug in and connect, it works a lot better and is just a visual display of everything you need.

Being able to wireless download/upload routes, updates, rides etc is brilliant.

MTN signing lots of good but inconsistent riders this year, maybe push for full world tour status at the end of next year depending how many points they get.

Dropped my bike at the shop, they diagnosed BB being broken too, not sure they did anything but spin the cranks over mind. They didn't have any bearings at either of their two shops, but I went to a bearing shop in town who could get the correct size for me next day.

Should just be a case of pressing the old bearings out and new ones into the plastic cups then I think, simple enough job for the shop to do....

is the garmin software supposed to be able to auto detect your PB's at all????

Ive ran a few 1/2 marathon's and a full...however it says that im yet to even do a 5k or a 10k. Surely it's supposed to look into all your sessions to find the fastest 5k/10k?

I was watching Apple's thing last night and I have to say, the watch looks mighty useful for cycling. You have to take your phone with you as well but turn instructions via vibrations and heart rate/altitude tracking seems pretty sweet.

Useful maybe if you're getting a watch anyway and don't have a GPS. But anyone serious about a cycling device would just get an Edge 500 with HR and cadence monitor. Save yourself ~£100 quid.

As far as I can tell, when they added the feature it didn't go back over your historical actives and find your PR for that distance. I am not sure why it wouldn't pick them up for anything you've uploaded recently, however - mine has certainly updated my PR for 5k when I've beaten it during a longer run. Overall the Garmin site is pretty substandard these days, which is a shame as I like their hardware.

I hate wearing anything on my wrists when I'm cycling, the feeling of it on my wrist and the rattling drives me insane; I have to take off my watch and bracelet when I go cycling. The only jewellery that stays on is my wedding ring and a necklace. I'm also not sure I'd want to be wearing some fancy pants apple priced watch when I'm sweating like mad.

As said, a Garmin 500 does the same job and is a lot easier to look at when it's on your stem than on your wrist, and has miles better battery life than an iphone. It seems a bit of a perfect storm to crash because you're looking at your watch and then not have any battery life left on your phone to call an ambulance :p

Rigoberto Uran and Christian Knees have both had to withdraw from the Vuelta :( The latter is surely bad news for Froome - gotta be the final nail in the coffin of any hopes of beating Contador.

My old boss was a member of the mountain rescue and part of his role was being a 'radio relay' so he had several Garmin GPS devices he swore by, but if it came to updating the firmware or connecting them to his PC (bear in mind he ran his own IT support company) he used to 'break' them and send them back under warranty to get a new replacement :D:rolleyes:

A serious classics squad for sure and Farrar and EBH are prime examples of those in needs a serious reboot / new challenge - they just need Matt Goss to complete the set! It's clearly somewhere to look for a (proper) African rider to come through - there are v good gene pools to draw from.

I've not had too many problems with the new Garmin Express. I find it useful now because of the new feature where you can link your connect account to Strava and it will automatically sync with Strava too.

I get the constant update message too though. Grrrrr.

+1 on that. Definitely a step forward.

Coming towards the autumn now and its a bit depressing that its dark so early. Did a "made up" fitness test last night using the time available. Rode a 30 mile out and back pretty much at threshold all the way. It was a fairly flat run and not too much wind but I was chuffed to break 20mph for pretty much the first time.http://www.strava.com/activities/192208238

I've also clocked up 3000 miles this year which is probably about 500 up on 2013 so overall I am satisfied with my progress. A niggling saddle sore issue has held me back slightly but not too much.

Already planning for 2015. Key for me is getting my turbo set up in the garage in order to keep some of my fitness that I lost over last winter despite still riding most weekends. I reckon I can get away with a harder Saturday session and a club run recovery Sunday on top of giving a bash at Trainer Road.

Might even treat myself to a new summer frame next year :) However I need proper challenging goal to motivate me. Do I have the bottle for Etape or Marmotte?

I've only had one major problem with a Garmin, and that was my 605 refusing to connect to a PC as a storage device, preventing me from uploading my activities. The weird thing is, it still charges via the USB port, so the connector isn't completely broken. I've replaced it with an 810 now, and I have a FR620 for running, so I don't need to connect to the PC to upload activities. Which is nice :p

Is anybody else doing the London Duathlon on Sunday? I'm not sure if discussion about duathlons belongs in here or in platypus's triathlon thread :|

Tips on cheapo cycling computer or HR/cadence to link to my galaxy S5 for Strava? Just for my interest more than anything... I'm a newbie and only really a commuter, nothing serious! :D

Nothing too expensive, say £150 tops for the computer (if it has the sensors too) or less than £70/80 for the HRM and cadence? Just so I'm not wasting my money on something junk a salesman thinks I need...

There are bluetooth HRMs, such as the Wahoo TICKR and the Zephyr HxM BT. Wahoo also make a bluetooth cadence/speed sensor. They'll come to more than £80 if you buy them separately, however. You could pick up a Garmin 705 on eBay for less than £150, but I am not sure if you could get one with an HRM.

For £187 you can get a brand new Garmin Edge 500 with HRM + cadence/speed sensor.

Not sure if there are any other cheaper options, but those are the ones that sprang to mind.

To be honest I'd stick with your phone unless you're going to spend a bit more and get a computer with mapping. Whilst not cheap certainly, these do open up a lot of options for route planning, and will help you get out more. Well at least I think so. It's fun planning a route to follow on your garmin.

Just unpacked my Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and dug out my spare bike to sit on it with. Need to get a speed/cadence sensor hooked up and re-adjust my old bike for my measurements and then I'll be good to go with Trainer Road. Should be fun :)
