There is no benefit to ceramic as a material over a steel bearing.
The benefit of ceramic is that it can be machined to a smoother surface than steel to create a smoother rolling bearing. It still needs all the precision machining work put in to make it a better bearing though so a cheaply made ceramic bearing will likely be worse than a properly machined steel bearing.

(ok, maybe ceramic doesnt rust so that would be a benefit over steel but if your steel bearings are dry enough to start rusting then you're probably not all that bothered about rolling resistance anyway)

Ceramics don't necessarily have to be machined, the inserts we have for the tools at work are melted and remoulded into shape.

Giant website says it takes a standard shimano external threaded bottom bracket, so that's hollowtech ii to you and me.

Thank you. Ill check with pic proof later before purchasing anything.

my shoes are finally going kaboom after around 8k miles in all weather :o got a hole near my thumb, peek-a-boooooo

I've done less than 2k and my shoes are starting to burst at the seams :(

This.

Mine were NTN branded.

I wouldn't bother with any eBay special high grade 5 A+++ bull****

Ceramic ball bearings might potentially be better but the cage will still be metal and could rust or tarnish.

Bottom bracket posted won't fit no. If you want to renew the actual BB you need new pressfit bearings.

They look like this: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/...mHwjLpPZdUaW7eKMsSwf0aAu-v8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

The crankset will fit though.

Guessed that was the case, just don't see bearings mentioned on most sites???

15:35 Lap of RP tonight, perfect conditions.

Good going, well done!

Good point. So what we're saying is not much point going ceramic and just to replace with better quality?

Somewhat baffled how we're concluding a 2015 defy 3 takes a press fit bb when the giant webpage for the 2015 defy 3 says it takes a htii bb

I don't think we are, two different conversations about the same thing on two Giant Defy's ;)

a 2015 Defy 3 100% takes a HT2 bb, its only 201 Defy 2/1/0s that use the AluxxSL frame with pressfit bb shell.

Agreed, IIRC The Defy 3 is all Shimano (Sora) with their solid crank and an external bb.

My Defy 1 has a mix of Shimano (105) and FSA. With the crankset (being htii) and bb being made of FSA cheese and internal press-fit bearings. I'm looking to replace with at least 5800(105), or ideally 6800(Ultegra) if I can confirm everything is compatible. (looks to be!)

So, my legs are still pretty knackered from the weekend. Damn recovery :/ Also, without being as detailed as Roady might be in this situation, saddle-soreness is pretty bad. Possibly having to ride the last 150 miles on a broken saddle didn't help...

You broke your saddle? :o

Is the **** bit next to the **** rubbing and causing **** with the ****? :p

Heard of a couple of local guys I've ridden with are training... Manchester to London... In 1 day. 220+ miles!

Lol, that bit exactly...maybe...who knows :p

OneMoreSolo rode London to Manchester a year or so ago. Looks pretty gruelling

edit: Dodgy Tioga Spyder saddle is great but yeah, it broke... Still, I got two replacements for $12 so it's not too big a deal.

I was expecting around 2-3k from my shoes but they sure as hell exceeded my expectations! what pair should I get next, dhb ones are super uncomfortable :( I've got a brand new pair sitting there for the past 4 months.. pfth! should've ridden them sooner.

The original saddle I bought was the more expensive Chinese knock-off and the plastic on that version is thinner/softer. Not more comfortable though. It started to break a little bit about a week back and then on the ride it just got destroyed. Probably didn't help that I was carrying a backpack filled with food and spare bits.

the one with Ti rails?

If you look on the map then Manc > London is all down but London > Manc is all up - way harder ;)

Haha yeah I figured the same!

And there's me not even thinking about doing 100 anytime soon! ;)

Shop ride for me this saturday - I think as my riding buddy will probably drop out of laters planned ride (rain is due and he's a fair weather pansy! ;) ). Although he did go out tuesday and did 43 miles in 2 hours 10 so have a feeling I'm going to be playing catchup when we get out lol

Another LBS public ride on the 22nd, I've opted in for the ~40 miles with the intentions of extending the run out/back slightly to push it over the 50 mark. Gonna take a bundle of cash with me this time as didn't last time and they were flogging old stock jerseys for £10! I love a bargain! ;):D

Yep, 3000m of climbing, the vast majority of which seemed to be in the final 100km (in terms of "proper climbs" anyway). The final climb back over the Peaks in to Leek/Macc nearly killed me. :p It would be a much easier ride the other way round IMO but likely to be into the wind.

My route was just shy of 200 miles so probably a bit less scenic than the one your clubmates are proposing Roady! I think the Rapha MCR-LDN ride was about that distance.
