Are they similarly good in wet weather? How about their lifespan?

yup, very grippy from my POV! slam on the rear brake and the tyre will "judder/jump" on the concrete rather than slide which is a new one!

I can't see any wear yet, it's been 1,222miles and they're still looking good! no major cuts on the front either.

overall I'm quite impressed tbh and when it comes to getting new tires I might just get another pair :o

Tempting. I might try some out next time I get new tyres. Given both of my current ones are new that should be a while but based on my recent experiences on the road...perhaps not :/

Got a number of screens set up for different riding.

TTs is very basic with time, average power HR and couple of other items.

Road Ride general just shows stuff like 10s power and balance, for when I go out longer rides.

Training contains predominantly lap power and stuff so I can do intervals at certain thresholds just utilising the lap button function.

This is on the Edge1000.

Looks like they're allowing custom development on a number of models according to the Garmin forums, when this will be released I don't know but could provide some much more intuitive data screens.

tomorrow looks wet.... :|

Rain was forecast here for thursday afternoon... Commuting home the road was wet but no rain, just some side/head winds. This morning the forecast was for rain again... Downpour while I was eating breakfast and then 10 minutes later when actually riding it had stopped (after I put all my kit on inc waterproof trousers which I've not commuted in for 3-4 months...)! Typical! Although a nice change from 'the freeze' to actually slightly overheat commuting...!

The commute home last night was headwinds but really hard work (14 mph avg), the commute in this morning was similar conditions and felt equally as hard (yet avg 15.9 mph), with less headwinds though. Still weirdly feeling like I'm 'down on power', is this likely a culmination of training after the winter 'break'?

My winter 'break' was only a single week of low mileage (43) and since then my averages have been over 70. With commuting that has put my fatigue consistantly higher than my form which I think is catching up on me. Rest days needed or just some bigger turbo sessions to build form back a little first then take them? Should Fitness & Fatigue be similar numbers like mine?

I've been told yes, now umming and arghing over whether to do it.

Seems like a no brainer with the info from Von - getting a bit of a tax break on something otherwise usually not considered as an asset is very welcome! Especially if you can use it for something which is a fairly expensive investment (like a PM!).

Great info, well written and very informative! Just wish my employer did a C2W scheme now...! :(

Reading your revised calcs though, hmmmm, it is tempting! I am definitely a underpaid lacky due to location, so will be lower tax rate. I just checked my payslip and I had £732 deducted this month to tax/NI, it breaks my heart :(

You're still paying more than me! My location and industry really are poor though... Mine hurts a little less as I was previously self employed and know the pain of the 'once a year' tax payment (via Self Assessment). Just had to do mine for 2014-15 as I have other non-taxed income.

Also, it was easier to swap out than clean it properly...

Pffft! Very easy to clean without removing cassette!

Anyone else do this?

Question for you all: What water bottles do you use? I like the Elite Corsa ones, but I don't like the idea of my nozzle being exposed (ooh err) to the elements/road dirt/mess.

My go-to bottle is the SiS 800ml as the cap is rubbery and good to pull with my teeth. I've found the more plastic caps I get sore teeth after using regularly (although I do have rubbish soft teeth!). Although the wide neck size of the High5 makes it loads easier to clean, I have one I use instead of a shaker as it has measurements on the side. I do have a Garmin-Sharp Camelback Podium (like this) I got free from somewhere and the cap is a nice rubbery one, the different way of opening would mean no 'teeth pulling' (if that's a requirement) but would have to ride with it 'open'. I'd happily use them & buy more.

People with PMs - what's your data screen setup like? On my 810 it's 8 points with something like:

Power, Power 3s
Speed, Cad
HRM, Avg Spd
Distance, Ascent
Elapsed Time, Time of Day

Even without a PM my display is similar (only minor variation between ride types):
Cadence
HR
Time of day
Elapsed time , Speed
HR % Max, Distance

Had set myself a goal of 1hr 30min on a 21 mile hilly local segment I need to try and hit this weekend (may be too busy getting ready for holiday to ride next weekend). Although with good weather forecast here tomorrow I'm very tempted by the LBS social ride...

Another amateur in the UK banned.
Link to PDF on there which has full details.
Claims his drink was spiked by a bloke he has a running drama with. From the guys story it sounds this other cyclist is a complete and utter knob, but UKADA aren't taking his story at all and have banned him for 4 years..... Not as glamorous and mad as some of the doping stories we get to read but yet another instance of doping at amateur levels.

Modafinil = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modafinil

Other guy sounds like a knob but I don't buy his story at all. Spike someones drink on the off chance they will be tested (a 1 in 1,000 shot at best at an amateur level) with a substance that happens to enhance performance in long time trials.

More likely it was a trace amount remaining from the 12 hour time trial or something similar IMO.

Does anyone have any yellow fluorescent type overshoes that are both warm and durable?

I've got the BBB Hardwear and WOULDN'T recommend them. The visibility is great but they do get really dirty after 1 damp/mucky ride. I've not found them very good for rain/spray protection, the neoprene used is thinner than other cheaper overshoes I've used (DHB & PX) and it seems to let the spray though. They're an overshoe for short rides in rain/commuting when the visibility and wind protection is key rather than any rain protection. I'm going to experiment on coating mine with some water repellent spray!

I have never used the lap functionality either...Perhaps I'll set up a training screen or two, or a training bike profile with this stuff on.

A training screen is a good choice, I actually have a training profile setup and use it mostly on the turbo. I only generally use the lap function when using this profile to measure my efforts.

Although I do occasionally use auto-lap to beep every 5 miles. Set it up originally as when riding with mates we do a '5 mile on the front then swap' but it's quite nice when riding solo to count down the 'sections' of a longer ride.

Interesting! I'm still riding my GP4S and have a set of GP4000SII's to fit for the spring/summer. You really like discs when commuting? How have you found the TRP's for staying aligned and for home maintenance?

If I was choosing something to spike a rivals drink with, I would make sure he couldn't claim it cant have been doping as the drug chosen has no effect.

But regardless, what a rubbish situation for the sport.

Personally I'd refuse the delivery and keep on with the refund - too little too late. But I'm a bit vindictive at times... :p

will keep that in mind when it ever turns up - total disgrace. Now 9 days since order, dispatched yesterday morning and tracking shows it's move about 20 miles to the local sorting centre.

Merlin cycles order yesterday at 11.30, dispatched at 12.30, arrived this morning at 9am - free postage for a new set of mtb brakes.

Quite a chilling tale of jealously and hate from the other guy really, if it's true. Still think they 'threw the book at him' which seems quite harsh considering the evidence... But:

Other guy sounds like a knob but I don't buy his story at all.

Exactly, having being caught for the first time he could equally have the 'scapegoat' story prepared, even though a 'first offence' 4 year ban seems quite strong - as if they didn't believe his story in the slightest! Still think the chance of him being tested in that event was well over 50%.

My yellow Sidi Kaos turned up... They're amazing! More comfortable than slippers even when done up fairly tight! Think this could be the weekend I switch my SPD's for the SPD-SL's! :D

Edit: New Ultegra groupsets now below £450 on Wiggle!

I see your point but I don't think the efficacy of the drug used has a bearing on the sentence ultimately. There was the case of a rugby coach who played an impromptu five minutes to effectively make up the numbers in a game in 2014 and subsequently failed a test for cocaine. He had no idea he would be playing, and the drug hardly helped his performance, but he still got the (then) maximum 2 year ban.

4 years is harsh on the face of it, but it's the new standard term so will be what all people get unless there are genuine mitigating circumstances.

It does strike some fear though. I mean I can sympathise with the governing body simply having to draw a line and remain as impartial as possible but can also sympathise with the guy.... Not saying his story was true but do believe the "it was pointless, I had everything to lose" side of things.

It's not worth anyone taking any risks regardless of level or chances of being tested, if you are competing on a race license in this country just don't take even the slightest risk. I get poked fun at off casual cycling mates for being paranoid about it with what I am taking and eating/drinking. And I wouldn't leave bottles or food unattended anywhere, absolutely no chance. You know the thoughts in their heads is essentially "you're not even good, why would they even test you?" but you never know so it's not worth forgetting it and everyone should be careful..... When I was running I got selected for some bigger national events, after which they were pulling people randomly and testing, no reason that couldn't happen at a British Cycling event anywhere. So yeah, rambling but you get the point.

Exactly!

Looks like some of the climbs I know about (from working in & around mid-wales) and wanted to ride at some point this year are being done as part of some Bianchi sponsored 'Double Devil Extreme Sportive' by a bike shop called County Cycles (who I've never heard of as they are they are from south/west Wales).

121 miles with over 12,000 ft of climbing or 95 miles with 10,000 ft. Ouch!

I was a little tempted but I'll already be in Wales for the Velothon at the start of the month. Looks like nice roads though!

Yeah, doesn't look like I'll be doing it - I can ride the Tumble any time as it's only ~25 miles from me! The closed roads are very tempting but it's the whole going all the way down to cardiff (~60 miles) to ride a climb 25 miles from home thing - and paying extra for it! :D

WARNING: MOAN INCOMING!
I take umbrage slightly over all of these 'Sportives' suddenly appearing when they're little more than a planned route over open roads on a specific day. All screams of moneymaking to me - although they all had to start somewhere... I guess!?

I'm only using this one as an example because the bike shop is based around 50 miles from where this ride starts from (Builth Wells Showground). I highly doubt many of the staff from this bike shop regularly frequent the roads planned, I'd hope they have ridden the routes at least once (the video seems to indicate they have). One of the most popular/largest mid-wales cycling clubs (The Bulls) is based in the town this ride start/ends in and their members were totally unaware of it until it appeared on RCUK. I really feel local clubs should be involved in Sportives more - at the very least they should be informed about it so they can participate. I'd like to think in an ideal world they were shown the route to check it was valid and to point out any dodgy roads/descents/busy roads/towns to avoid etc. Shouldn't local clubs be involved in local rides?! :D

TLDR; I'm moaning about too many Sportives :p
