After riding with Ben I've noticed I just get smoked at speed on the flats. Something I must work on.

Can confirm, smoked :p

Right confirmed that I will be in Provence from the 13th of May to the 7th of June. Likely in the first two weeks I will be having another go at Ventoux, if anyone wants to join me :).

I will be in the UK from the 16th June until sometime early July for scheduling rides if people are also up for that, one up north definitely FrenchTart. OneMoreSolo/anyone else care to join?

Just back from my first ride this year - I had fitted some swisstop green pads to my force callipers over winter, today was my first time out on them and I am absolutely flabbergasted... Given my 100kg weight I can't believe the power of these things, they're so strong I can endo at 15mph. They're not exactly expensive either. I was really excited about disc brakes coming to road bikes but now I am beginning to wonder if there is any point!

Try the blues. They are better still.

What a fantastic day, headed out in baselayer, jersey, very lightweight jacket, arm and knee warmers, which was perfect for the first 15 or so miles, took the jacket off, then slowly warmed up, had a nice spot of lunch in Petersfield, 30 miles in, we were going to go to a Cafe, but the place had no seats, so had to go to the pub, meaning an increase in calorie intake, and I decided to have a Cider :D

Head off, and do a nice climb for down this way, just mashed it up Torquing up the climb at 60rpm! Eventually take my arm warmers off about 7 miles after the pub, and succumb another 5 miles or so later with the knee warmers! Had so much stuff squeezed in my pockets, the main problem this time of year, as I like to wrap up until warmed up. Don't want to be doing myself an injury!

Had another stop off at another pub about 57 miles in, as we had all run out of drink! And felt like this was the hottest the day had been. Great ride overall!

Not a bad end to the bank holiday weekend. 4 days, 220 miles, and a good 14 hours or so of riding in total! Now for some much needed rest. Away next weekend on a stag do, so nice couple of easy days then 4 days off the bike!

Popped out after work tonight but only did 12 miles. Just wasn't in the right frame of mind for it. Got a couple of wind assisted PBs on the way back so i achieved something :p

12 miles is better than 0 miles. After work I often do less than 10 miles but I'm still glad to get out for what I can fit in.

Stupidly didn't take advantage of getting out first thing today and yesterdays ride was cut short by a puncture after a mile and a half that I couldn't be bothered to fix at the side of the road so I walked back. Must get out tomorrow after work!

New tyres should be here before the week is out then the Kenda's will be off (I'll keep them for the turbo I'll be getting in the winter) and hopefully my deflating problems will be reduced!

Absolute fail today, garmin was not having any of it. Was trying to get to Brighton, as you can see that did NOT happen.
I probably needed the hill practice, and by the end of it, was absolutely shattered.
What the garmin recorded:

I know a few people that have been having Garmin issues all with 800's. Thankfully my 200 has been faultless, then again I've only done about 700 miles with it so haven't exactly tested it that fully!

What do you guys do with your Garmins when out on longer rides? I often see people post a 6 hour ride with 4 1/2 hours of actual riding for example. Do you pause them? Let them auto pause when stopped? Turn them off? I'll be doing a ride on Sunday with a stop for lunch and realised I don't actually know what to do with it :p

Depends, if it's a proper stop I'll pause it and let it auto sleep, if it will be 5-10 i'll just let it auto pause. If I'm on the MTB I don't have auto pause enabled so it keeps on ticking away no matter what.

Ah, simple enough then! Interesting you mention not using auto pause on the MTB. Is that because of signal drops through wooded sections?

So, I am a rubbish bike mechanic and I need a little help with my gears!!

Getting a lot of chain rub on the front derailleur for the biggest 4 sprockets and I have literally no idea how to alleviate it. I've tried tightening the inner limit screw but even at its tightest there is still no clearance, is it a case of turning the barrel adjuster on the cable?

Well confused.

Can you push the derraileur out further? If so the cable probably isn't pulling it tight enough! Either adjust the barrel or tighten the cable.

Or am i reading that when you're in the small ring at the front, the largest 4 sprockets at the rear, cause rubbing, if so are the limits set so it can drop as far as possible towards the frame?

:bit confused: :D

Tbh it is mainly due to when I'm on a bloody steep climb and i'm probably riding at about 3mph horizontally it stop/starts, whereas in reality you're probably doing 4.5 or so due to the incline.

Got ya. I'll be riding fairly flat with the guys from work for the first couple of hours so I think I'll be doing lots of stopping and waiting around so I may well leave it on :p

Does your shifter have a trim setting? If so does this not have any effect?

start from scratch.
follow the above video

a lot of videos on youtube are not worth watching because they miss steps or don't explain what positions things need to be in when you start. (like position of the shifter when the cable is detached and which cogs the chain is on at the front and rear when you make the adjustments)

Is the milometer not measured by your wheel rotation? the wheel doesn't care the angle of the slope it still turns exactly the same distance the same as it would on a flat?

te garmins speed should be accurate as long as it's not using GPS in which case I could see your point about actually being faster up hill than on a straight

I can push the derailleur close to the frame to prevent contact with the chain but the limit screws on their own won't position the derailleur in that position and I can't figure out if I need to loosen or tighten the cable to correct this.

It rubs in the small ring and only the biggest cog. When in the big ring, the four biggest cogs result in rubbing. Now I know you should expect some in maybe the biggest cog, but not for 4?!?

Just watched that video and they make it look so straightforward. Will give it a go tomorrow maybe but just wondered if there is a quick way to stop the rub by adjusting something.

seriously I struggled with mine before stumbling on that video after watching a few others.

hardest part is attaching the cable with the correct tension to make it shift.

setting up the high/low levels should be easy, you probably had the chain on the wrong cogs when you set it up and so it just gets jammed when you try to shift.

also I got a double and not a triple chainset on my most recent bike which gives more room for error

Canyon Ultimate CF SL 9.0 Di2?

Cheers guys. I looked at the Canyon shortly after posting and it is very nice. They don't seem to offer finance though that I can see!? I also like the look of the aero version with the deep section wheels, although it'd be cheaper to buy some Chinese wheels than upgrade to di2!

Would be if I had one on the mtb yes, but I don't have sensors for all bikes and the mtb is the one that misses out. Altho I do use the speed sensor every now and then.

You still riding with Wally & co? I'll have to come embarrass myself next time you go out.

Yep, still out with them a fair bit. I won't be out much over the next couple of months, but I can tell Walt you're back in the game and I'm sure he can drop you a text!

Yeah nice one. I can still only do every other weekend but I'm definitely free next weekend.
