sounds good D.P.
sorry to hear about your foot

if you can do a marathon, then it sounds like you know what your doing in terms of fitness, are you going to start swimming too ? maybe do some Tri?

My rough plan is to add some swimming and cycling to my marathon training with the aims to reduce training stress on the joint and add interest. I am interested in ultimately doing some endurance triathlons with a possible half IRONMAN in a year or 2, all dependent on much I enjoy cycling and swimming, how much progress I make, and training-life trade offs.

I'm definitely a jack of all trades kind of person. I did very well in my first marathon (3:27:27) but don't have the interest or natural athleticism to take it to a serious level like sub-3 hour marathons. I have good endurance, and love endurance based sports so long triathlons might be a good fit for me.

I also think triathlon training will just be more fun and somewhat easier actually. In the summers here (Virgina) it gets insanely hot, like 30*C and 95% humidity at 7am sometimes making running very hard.Cycling I think will be a bit easier because of the wind and ability to carry lots of liquids, and on the worst days I can go swimming. I also found with running you are always trying to ramp o the weekly miles while listening closely to your body for signs of distress in the knees/joints/feet. Triathlon training just seems healthier in this regard and it is easier to back-off from 1 activity and concentrate on the other 2 if you feel stress in a particular joint/muscle.

That is my theory anyway. Maybe in a few months I will hate cycling, or love cycling so much more than running.

+1 for PX unpadded overtights. I still haven't deployed the knee warmers yet! Warmest November ever or just London?

For gloves, I have really bad fingers (not quite Raynaud's but damn poor circulation) and the only gloves that work reasonably (still not great sub-5C) are Rapha Deep Winter gloves + merino liners OR the Castelli Estremos.

On a different note, I replaced my worn out commuter SPD shoes last week. No matter where I position the cleat on the new pair, I'm getting pain in my left arch following hard sprints. I also tried an arch support to see if that helped but it did not. Any ideas?

Anyone have any mudguard recommendations for a Cannondale Synapse? The one with the bendy seat stays? I ordered some SKS raceblades but because of the bend the brackets are too short and the mudguard sits directly on the tyre. Just after something low profile for winter road spray.

Which raceblades?

some synapses take proper mudguards apparently.

You could combine the Raceblade (on the front) with something like this on the rear? With it fitting to your seatpost you can obviously adjust the height to avoid any rear wheel rub.

Although I'm slightly confused over the raceblade rubbing because the seatstays are flexing, the raceblade being fitted to the QR should means the guard moves with the wheel as the stay flexes. If you adjust the guard stays so they are quite 'upright' (they're a pair) you should find the flex pushes the guard upwards rather than 'outwards' (which is probably pulling it down against the wheel near the brake bridge). :D

There is also a 'clip-on' set of Raceblades which would move with your stays as they don't fix to the brake bridges. I've heard they're bad for rubbing/flexing but have not tried them myself.

Finally had my MRI scan about a month ago, and finally saw a phisio last week

looks like my disc in my back is worn, so having referral pain from that

doing exercises, hoping to start riding again soon, phisio suggested I start with 5 miles to let my back get used to the position again (I tried 8 miles 2 weeks ago and I had back pain :()

so im going to set it up on the turbo until the better weather comes, I cant be arsed to put all my winter kit on, just for 5 miles !

Ease yourself into it, although with the pain little and regular will build up the area rather than big/long rides (as suggested), although with the worn disc is there much they can do to assist it? Exercises/meds?

Went on my first bike ride in years on my new bike.

Welcome along to our small part of the world! You'll be a convert in no time! ;)

Any recommendations for unpadded winter bib tights? Anything better out there than the Lusso Max Repel for £50?

im happy with my £20 Planet X ones (Roubaix fabric, super warm)

I love my Vaeon Roubaix unpadded, although not great waterproofing or wind protection they're warm. Too warm for the current temps but the frosts we had a month/6 weeks ago they were perfect. Some great features over normal bib tights - wide mesh straps so they don't 'fight' with other bibs, a short zip at the front so they're easier to get on/off over other layers (as they fit higher up the chest) and offset zips at the leg bottoms so they don't overlap other zips. Although they could do with more reflective detailing their multi-panel construction gives a great fit.

I'm hoping one day Wiggle/DHB do a padless windslam tight with some water resistant coating. They were close with these padded Aeron Windslam.

Fun ride home last night... 45mph gusts which were actually Easterly for the start of my commute giving an insane tailwind, I was nearing 25mph with little effort (concentrating on the debris & my line!). Although I had to stop to remove a leaf from my rear caliper, boo!

You'll have to let me know how that woman's windslam jersey fits your mrs, Roady. Some reviews are weird... or I might order one (not for me)

@ Roady

Saw the phisio last Wednesday, and she gave me exercises to do, that was all. I have 4 to do, twice a day, if it doesn't improve by Wednesday next week, I have to make an appointment to see her, so things may change

When I went to the doctors after my scan, they referred me to the muskeletal (spelling?) but she said maybe perhaps get a pain reliving injection or something, but its up to the triad doctors to make a decision on where to go, hence why I was at phisio last week

not been on the bike yet

washed the car this morning, and my back is feeling it :(

Woke up thinking there is barely any wind relative to last night.... Turns out relatively to nothing it was still a lot of wind! Certainly felt the crosswind attacks this morning.

Quick question to Jonny69, I managed to get my hands on those limiter washer things (for lack of a technical term). Have I got it the right way round? This was my best guess for the limit point too (so that it doesn't slacken off the shifter cable too much?).

Old shoes wider so the new ones are adding pressure to the sides of your feet hurting the arch under increased pressure? Or could be the opposite - new shoes are wider so the left arch is collapsing where before it didn't as the shoe was tighter? Just clutching at straws... I know when I fitted my inserts (collapsing left arch causing pain/numbness on outside of right foot) it took a couple of weeks to clear up and be 'solved'.

I didn't order one in the end as the smallest I think is a size 12 and my better half is a size 8/10 (depending on brand). Also not convinced I can get her in cycling attire anyway as she seems to wear superdry jackets instead of anything cycling specific!

I imagine the exercises will take more than a couple of weeks to have a real impact, think of them as a core training to help your riding rather than 'something for the back' as you may get more out of them/more encouragement! ;)

Great to hear they want to hear progress from you with revisits, hopefully that means they're being fairly proactive with your progression!

Washing the car isn't exactly a regular thing (I'm terrible!) so I'd be surprised if your back didn't ache after it! I know mine does after I clean mine! :)

Awesome as I expect they have more things up their sleeves/ideas if you should need them! Fingers crossed not required :D
