I can't remember if you commuted last year or if you've just started a new one...

Yeah, commuting seems to knock it out of you a lot more than weekend long rides. Seems to be something to do with the lack of proper recovery time. You ride reasonably strenuously in the morning, short break, rinse and repeat in the evening. Probably don't stretch. Your overnight break is pretty much the same and isn't really long enough to properly recover from the day. You DO need to make sure you get enough calories in as well, otherwise you're way in deficit by the end of the week and feel awful. Bonking on your way home on a Friday when you've not eaten enough during the week is just the worst feeling. You'll need a lot more calories than makes sense, too, and I don't know why this is.

But you do harden up to it in time.

indeed... I consume around 3.5k/day ! but I also go to gym so that adds extra burn/stress to my body!

Didn't bother with the commute this morning. Too rainy. Plus I needed to pick up some packages from work in the car, so it was relatively guilt free (I cycled extra anyway last night!).

I find this is the same with me, come Wednesday my legs are tired when I'm only doing 4 short rides a day, but I think that is problem.

2 rides in the morning, 2 rides in the evening broken up by a 30 minute train ride, as my legs are warming up and feeling better I've stopped and I'm sat down and then 30 minutes later doing the same. I eat enough during the day, my calories are definitely up there :p but I think it's the short spurts on the bike that ruin me.

Weekends/long rides are fine, once I've got 5-10 miles in my legs, I'm good to go.

You pretty much have to extend it to 3 years iirc and even then there's a lump sum which about the same as an extra month of payment.

Mine also comes up shortly but you either pay an extra 3% or 7% depending if you loaned over £500 or not, then after 3 years you then own the bike in the eyes of the scheme.

excuses :D I jam my backpack full of stuff to a point that my shoulders hurt at the end of the commute... BUT I STILL RIDE IT!!! GOTTA KEEP PUSHING

Double puncture on the way in this morning. And some a hole pinched my shower gel. Who does that?

Ouch! Not even that long a commute for you is it? Old tired tyres? I hit some metal on the way home monday, then some black trim plastic on the way home last night... Both times riding the rest of the commute waiting for *that* feeling... And nothing! But think my days are now numbered lol...! ;)

Careful with this, 'I cycled extra anyway last night' becomes 'I'll do extra next weekend', then before you know it 'wtf I only did 32 miles last week?!?!?!?' :D;)

Contacted my HR department who informed me I will pay a £1 admin fee. I'm suspicious of this.... will see when next month comes. If that is the case then utter bonus!

Is it a one year scheme? What was the cost of the bike? If they're giving the bike to you at the end of the scheme, you'll pay something for it, though it may be that you just pay a benefit in kind tax charge on receipt of the bike.

(I'm a tax adviser, so have a good idea how these schemes work!)

Probably a London Dynamo.

:D

I'd be suspicious too. There are multiple schemes though and your organisation may even run the same ones in different ways to others on the same scheme.

I'm on Cyclescheme and working at a university (though we don't get VAT off or anything like that). Any idea who you're with?

Ha I had my macbook, lunch, clothes for me and the Mrs was like can you take this bag to give to Daisy (mate's mrs)... pack horse, in the rain, but did it :D

Through my reading about, this was the impression I got. Our company use Cycleplus, so will take a good eye on the final paperwork to understand what the handover is, as you say it may be our company is paying the final section as a BIK as when the changes to the scheme were introduced there was a drop in take up of it. I shall let you know when I get the paperwork through.

Remember everyone, be safe, DON'T wear a helmet or you'll turn into a thrill-seeking adrenaline junkie.

Probably more applicable to the mountain bikers! :D

In other news, my box of bits turned up yesterday! Popped home for lunch and RM man was leaving my road, managed to flag him down to grab them!

May try and get this all built up at the weekend!

That's stupid.
If I'm not wearing a helmet, I won't be doing any mountain biking.
If I am, then I probably will.

It doesn't make me take MORE risks than I was going to anyway. And since this is the road cycling thread... I won't be taking more risks on the road when wearing one, nor feeling much safer. I just like wearing one... just in case. Some protection is better than none.

It's not that stupid. Adjustment to risk has been observed in many studies. It certainly explains why car drivers behave like utter nobs... After all, they're safe as houses in their super safe cars.
