Ouch that's pretty low mileage, even coming from me (I've seen 700/800 before now!). The 'rust' from road salt won't drastically increase wear if your chain was lubed to begin with, but lots of road spray combined with the road salt is very efficient at washing lube from chains, leaving the chain very dry (from the salt) if it is then ridden again (leading to much higher wear).

You can relube a 'rusty' chain and it'll generally clear much the rust away after some usage, but it is best scrubbed/cleaned first to remove as much of the salt residue as possible. Mine is looking pretty sorry for itself and around the 0.70 mark for most of it, some at 0.75. Once the roads are no longer being salted I'll replace it, but I'll certainly not be putting a new one on before then! :o

I just checked and it came fitted with a £3 KMC chain so I'll not worry too much! I've used cheap (£4 Bell) chains on a winter hack in the past and never had that much insta-rust. I'll swap it out for something a bit better and possibly look into another lube. I'm down into the dregs of my Finish Line Wet anyway.

I did it last year and was good fun, the app is pretty good too.

I'm going to have a large chunk left on my Cycle to Work voucher. What is the best all in one front light going? Bright enough for unlit lanes and ~3 hour run time would be good.

Never had problem with rusty chains. Even if I use dry lube, and it's washed off, and it rusts for a little bit (like a couple of links) then use wet lube use it for a bit wipe off rusty oil and re-lube it's spotless, and no stiff links. I don't use cheap chains though. KMC Z610 HX for the fixie.

My Mk1 Exposure Diablo is still going strong. Really bright and has 3 hours on medium setting (which is still more than enough). Has 1 hour on full, and 10 on low iirc

Very good quality products!

Z610HX? I bought one of those by mistake, so I have one going spare. It's a 3/32" one, still in the box. You're welcome to it for the cost of posting.

Nice day today, feeling bit better so did an easy 90 minutes. Saw quite a few people out, including maybe Wiggins near Parbold.

Too busy with traffic so I couldn't say for sure, Pinarello & GB kit.

Tempted, but don't think I could do it to myself (9 consecutive days on the turbo). Is it always 9 days/sessions?! Really need to try their new app, it's meant to be superb!

Haha yeah I always used to burn through KMC's, the KMC X11L that came on my Defy lasted less than 900 miles (through a winter). A Shimano CN-HG701 on there lasted 1500 miles (half a winter), on par with the SRAM PC1130's I preferred. The KMC X11 on my Diverge has done 1650 miles and still going (hopefully through this winter!). I've got 2 new PC1130's hanging around ready! (personally the best 11 speed chain you can get sub £20) :D

Anything Exposure and over 1000 lumen. Strada/Diablo. The Race could be a shout too. I would head towards the Strada as it's road orientated and has a superb mount.
Kmc ones are labelled EPT.
Thanks for this, will hunt one down for the other half as hers tends to get abused and hardly ever cleaned!

Just short of 1400 miles on my KMC on the other bike so I don't normally trash them so quickly :p

Super noob question... I'm thinking of changing the cassette on the winter bike from a 11-30 to a 11-28 as I don't like the big gaps you get on a 11-30 8 speed. I can only find a SRAM in those ratios, well... in shops that I have soon to expire credit notes anyway, so will that be ok as a direct replacement to the Shimano one? I'm 99% sure the answer is yes but after buying a cassette to replace a screw on freewheel in the past I don't put anything past me these days :p

ooo wow! That's pretty close yeh! As at work I'm about 3 miles or so from that location.

Shame I no longer have a Boardman anymore :(

Forecast looks like it'll be VERY icy tomorrow too :(

How do you all get through chains so quickly? :p

Ultegra chain lasted me 4000 miles and a replacement PC1130 is going on tonight after 3500 miles.

I'm still on my first Campag chain on my Rose which now has over 7300 miles on it.

I use a Park Tools chain wear tool but later found out they don't read properly on campag chains so it probably wore out a long time ago. It still seems to shift fine though.

I expect the chain is going to take my cassette and maybe chain rings with it!:o:eek:

They simply can't handle my Watts... or was it my poor maintenance. One of those two anyway :p

To be honest I do rely completely on my chain wear checker thingy so I could well be throwing away perfectly serviceable chains :o
