what the hell do you do in Winter ? :D

i wear my soft shell all through the spring , autumn and winter
I don't wear a jacket unless it's monsoon pouring rain.
I find a decent winter jersey with 2x base layers is enough for down to -5c temps.

On the the rare occasions I'm wearing a waterproof jacket it will be with base layers only - Adding a jersey under a jacket means overheating, for me.

im sure somebody here wears the same softshell as me (altura night vision ) and wears it all winter like me, but when temps go the coldest with a strong wind, i have to wear many layers underneath, no idea how you go without anything underneath

Winter for me is a base layer, jersey or windproof jacket (Poggio) and a rain cape. Regardless of weather it rains.

I quite literally freeze in the winter and despite wearing as little/light a gear as possible, boil in the summer.

so is it not worth me keeping this jacket then?

We're all different when it comes to what we wear to stay warm. I'm just saying I don't see the point in wearing a jersey under your jacket but outside your bibs, especially if it sticks out from under the jacket. Why not just wear more base layers?

People here do wear their base layers under their shorts right?:p

Sorting out layers for varying temps is a dark art. Great once you know what you're doing with your layers but lots of trial and error, especially when you're wearing new items and don't know how warm they are or aren't.

Long shot I know but we had our garage broken into and our hybrids stolen [from the Cambridge area]. They're BTwin hoprider 520s, and unfortunately the accessories are worth more than the bikes.

The bikes are 3 years old, and to be quite honest looking a bit old, but they've been well maintained and are our about town/getting to work bikes.

Serial numbers on the frames are 0002-0104-6979 and 0002-0103-3849, and they look like this:

Sorry for the stock photo but I don't have a recent photo to hand. Thank **** the rest of our stuff is cabled to a floor anchor.

Accessories are without serials sadly, a Fizik Antares saddle, a Brooks B67 ladies saddle, an Exposure Blaze MK1 rear light, an Exposure Diablo front light, a Fibre Flare rear light, 2 sets of Shimano SPD-SL pedals, and they both had a trailer bracket on their rear wheel.

Please keep an eye out on Gumtree/Ebay.

i too wear a Jersey and a JKT over the top, so, so im not the only one!

I wouldn't wear a base, Jersey and then something like a Gabba together, that's a bit like wearing two t-shirts or pairs of trousers in my eyes :p

But a base and then either jacket or jersey and a windshell/raincape on top if really required is my usual go-to when the chill hits.

Yes, but sometimes I wear a merino jersey under a baselayer to add additional warmth, but still give me an option to open my jersey up, but generally baselayers > bib shorts > jacket/jersey.

Fitted my Specialized front guard over the weekend, I now have so much clearance over these 28mm's it's crazy (can see daylight!). Can see me switching to 30/32mm tyres very soon. Anyone with any experience of road tyres that large? Ideally I want something fast-ish and I'm not convinced about going tubeless (just yet)... Mitchelin & Continental don't tend to do their 'fast' road tyres (Power/Pro4's & GP's) over 28mm with only the Gatorskins at 32mm. I don't know enough about the Vittoria/Schwalbe ranges. What's comparable to a premium 'road' tyre available in 30/32mm? Preferably below £40 (each).

Had an enjoyable club/social ride on saturday. Lots of races and things on so only around 5 of us regulars with no 'staff' ride leader so we were left to our own devices. Just as we went to leave 3 riders from ELY turned up as most of their club were away racing or training for LEJOG. With a couple of quicker guys along (including Josh - a local youngster who competes nationally and will be going places in future!) and no newbie's it meant a good quick easy ride with everyone enjoying the sunshine (Woohoo!). I was feeling strong after an easy week (after Gospel on monday) with a rest day on friday, so put a few digs into the climbs back towards home. Really enjoyed it and a few good roads I don't really know so good to find them!

You're comparing apples to oranges with those tyres. It's not the tiny bit of tread that's making the difference to wet grip.
But some channels to aid the shedding of water from the contact area has to increase grip, no? It can't all be a placebo? It probably could but I like to think I've only more confidence for valid reasons...

And as if to convince me, with a light shower on this mornings commute I slid the rear Pro4 scrubbing speed moving from road to cyclepath... :p

Has anyone ever washed their helmet? Mine kinda smells.
Of cheese...? :o

Pads tend to be removable (& easily washed) but not many helmets let you remove straps, they're what tends to stink the worst (for me!). As mentioned soak them in water, I've soaked mine in warm washing up liquid & water before now as I was conscious of not soaking anything 'cleaning fluid' related into the helmet and damaging it/glue holding plastic shell to polstyrene. Had the helmet on top of a bowl with the straps dipped in. Have also sprayed them with 'Oust' (or such) as I had quite a stink in them after a multiple hour ride with lots of garlic & onion the night before... Just be conscious of the polystyrene.

so i changed my Sportful Pordoi WS Jacket to an XL, better fit, i can see why they call it a PRO fit, its not as baggy as my Altura Night vision soft shell, its snug :)
one thing that is bothering me, so im not sure if i should keep it, is the fact that it isnt very long in the torso, the back is fine, just the front comes up short, you can see my jersey underneath because its that short
hmm
Keep it mate, the high front is just the 'pro' fit. You'll only be seeing the jersey when standing with it mostly hidden in the riding position? As mentioned lots of these 'jackets' are generally worn as a jersey replacement without a layer underneith. I know my 'Wind Jersey' is more of a jacket in it's design/features (reflective strips, pockets, high collar/long cuffs) and I'd never wear it under anything other than maybe a packable rain jacket. I also tend to wear a gilet over the top, rather than a jersey under for colder changeable weather and midwinter I'd wear more of a softshell.

Grrrr.... my Max Flite Gel saddle is squeaking again. The method I used last time to sort it (3M oil pen to drip oil between the rails and plastic mounts) hasn't worked. I'll try more oil but I'm now debating whether to pick up a new saddle before my 100 on Sunday. If I do I fully predict my backside to be telling me that was a bad idea before I hit the halfway mark :p
Try some lube? Might work it's way in and not run off as easily as oil?

Guys, just looking for some advice
Sure Benny hasn't got a spare he'll sell? He might want an excuse for a new bike...? ;)

The guys here have you covered, although forming a relationship with a good LBS (if you have one) and/or club can be a very good thing when you're new. Especially if you decide to go the second hand route. A second hand bike will also depreciate less as let's face it, at that price point whatever the outcome you're unlikely to be keeping it for as long as a year...

Gutted for you mate, hope they're covered under the house insurance if nothing specific? They should cover accessories attached the bikes too.

If it comes down to replacing I've got a basic Fizik Arione and some SPD-SL (think they're the basic ones, not 105's) I can do you a deal on (don't really want anything for the pedals as they're well loved/used but still got lots of life left).

Very kind cheers mate, the bikes are definitely covered, but unfortunately it looks like they're going to weasel out of paying for the saddle and light as I can't find the receipt for them - they were bought at a date before my Wiggle order history starts it seems :/. Though I know I bought both from Wiggle, and can remember the exact prices I paid. And of course Fibre Flares are out of production it seems now so won't get that replaced. I'll let you know about the saddle if it comes to it.
