Road Cycling

Fitted my Specialized front guard over the weekend, I now have so much clearance over these 28mm's it's crazy (can see daylight!). Can see me switching to 30/32mm tyres very soon. Anyone with any experience of road tyres that large? Ideally I want something fast-ish and I'm not convinced about going tubeless (just yet)... Mitchelin & Continental don't tend to do their 'fast' road tyres (Power/Pro4's & GP's) over 28mm with only the Gatorskins at 32mm. I don't know enough about the Vittoria/Schwalbe ranges. What's comparable to a premium 'road' tyre available in 30/32mm? Preferably below £40 (each).

I replaced my 38c Marathon Cross pair with a bargain pair of 29x2.35 Schwalbe G-One Speed Evo TLEs yesterday afternoon, £50 total from Ebay (new, someone won them but couldn't use them apparently). The G-Ones have had such a good reputation over the last ~18 months, but the RRP put me off, was ~£40 and in these days of weak pound closer to £50 each.

SJS have a good price on the 35c and 38c G-Ones https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/tyres/7...one-tubeless-easy-hs473-folding-tyre-700-622/

They do a 30c clincher version, but finding them at a nice price might be tricky, worth checking www.Athleteshop.com as they sometimes do great tyre deals.

The technology is essentially perfect on a £150 wheelset, the extra cash goes into lighter faster and stronger, and isn't it nice that you can repair it for £2?

Around -1 here this morning, proper bitter cold so dressed for it... Cue the sun being out and it actually being much warmer! Thankfully a -1 windchill so I didn't quite overheat! :o

Great ride and effort considering, kudos to Dave for being so helpful & extra kudos to both of you for sacrificing your ride times for a stranger like that. Watching out for each other is a big part of cycling, we're all 'brothers of the cog' and really wish we saw more inclusion and group spirit like that! Hope you enjoyed it anyway! :)

Sounds like usual dodgy Sportive riding! Seen so many close calls from riders who have literally no concept of riding with others. Thankfully never seen anything as bad as you guys did! Hope you enjoyed the ride regardless, very strong ride mate! :)

I jumped onto the front of a group of 20 or so doing 4mph less and slowly accelerated away hoping I'd tempt a few riders with me but no one budged :(
A 4mph increase is quite a jump if they'd been doing a steady speed for multiple miles together previously! You're just too strong for the northerners! ;)

Got 5th for the KoM and 5th overall, so I'm pretty happy with that. :) Strava link
Great ride & supreme skills to finish in that time mate! 3rd on Strava, well done! :D

I did the etape as well, nothing like as fast as the other guys though. Still happy with taking 20minutes out of last years time though despite a real lack of training this year :(

Still a fantastic time and ride, well done! I think that's the kinda speed most of us would do it (me included!) ;)

even it's proper name would be good!!
As mentioned, 'freehub pawl spring'. I bought one from sigma for my Campag Khamsin for around £2 a couple of weeks back. OOS. Evans have them (as do Ribble) - you'll have to do your own checking that's the right one! ;)

Excellent info, exactly what I wanted, although I have also come across a Zipp Tangente in 30mm which looks very promising...! The 28mm's reading as very comparable to the top offerings from conti & mitchelin, I hope the 30mm are more of the same! ;)

They're genuine according to his other post.

Just interested in the lens name, my CAVNDSH Jawbreakers only came with 1 lens and it doesn't have the corner air vents like those do (& I want!) :)

Went to the opticians a couple of weeks back and they've advised me not to get my eyes lasered again. I had them done in 2003 and the last couple of years the short-sightedness I used to suffer from has crept back in (eyes 'repairing' bring it back).

As I'm now 37, if I get lasered to correct the distance (I currently only need glasses for driving/cinema/TV), then when my eyes age a little more I'll probably need glasses for screen use/reading (and not distance). If I don't get lasered then they'll likely continue as they are, without needing glasses for the close stuff, just the distance.

Basically it means I do want perscription lenses in my Oakleys at some point. I'm inclined to stick with Jawbreakers as they fit my face better than Radarlocks (and there's so many different versions of Radarlocks you can end up stuck with lenses not able to fit your frames, less of an issue with Jawbreakers IIRC).

I've been wondering about laser eye surgery. I'm fed up not being able to see things at distance and I only have one pair of cycling glasses with prescription lenses.

But wouldn't they be bored? They could try and worst outcome is they jump back onto the previous group :)

There was a guy in that line with the same bike as me so I said nice bike as I went by and he responded with "How comes your one is going faster?"

Can confirm, Foakleys.

Never said they were genuine? (Ahh, further up I said I was about to plunge on a real pair, but never did as the second set of knock offs were significantly better than the first!)

Normal Prizm lens.
I misunderstood the 'Originals' comment as meaning 'Genuine'. Sorry! :o

Mechanism looks very similar to my real ones, I'll have a look later. My real ones came with less accessories than my Foakleys...

It was fantastic. I wore glasses from the age of around 5/6 and couldn't do anything without them. My short-sighted prescription was so strong that I couldn't try contacts until around 2001 and they were so thick I couldn't get used to them. I researched laser-eye for around 6 years before eventually going for it (with Ultralase, one of the pioneers in Europe, now out of business I think?!). It cost around £2500, but is much cheaper now, less intrusive and takes less recovery. I'd recommend Boots as they were on my shortlist back then as one of the best. I'd have it again without a doubt (even at the same cost. It's now around ~£600), but no point penalizing myself for day-to-day work/life with 'reading' glasses to solve the distance stuff, I'd rather only need them for distance.

But wouldn't they be bored? They could try and worst outcome is they jump back onto the previous group :)
Haha, but if (%lethal%-4mph)="high-tempo" while (%lethal%)="definite-threshold" they might not have been able to! ;)

Hail and sleet storms here all afternoon, strong chilling winds too. I'm not going for the chain-gang in weather like this (knowing I'd be one of the few with mudguards!). I'm going to try and get out on thursday for a social one known as 'Thirsty Thursday' instead. As Thursday is my other halfs 'late-finish' it's normally our weekly shop night so I'm not normally allowed... Not this week! :D

Those in the know... What Specialized aero bike came before the 'Venge'? Was it just earlier versions of the Tarmac?

I think I'm after an aero rim brake 'summer' bike. Probably a frame purchase & probably second hand to keep costs low

I've kinda written off getting a Cervelo S3 Disc as I don't like the colour options. I don't like the brakes on the Giant Propel. Chatting after our ride on saturday several of the guys were surprised how heavy my Diverge is (and I'd dropped them on most of the hills!), it was significantly heavier than a couple of Scultura's (one of them a £600 alu frame) and a Trek Domane. My alu Defy with the lightest wheels I own (RS81) is nowhere near as light.

I'm after a frame only to keep costs low, I like the fact I can spread groupset costs around (possibly even using 105 parts I already have). I have multiple wheelsets already (two of which I'd use) - I have a nice light part of Shimano RS81's and a set of Roval AL/SL I'm going to build up for TT'ing. So I want a light aero frame. Maybe a Cervelo S3 (love the red/black/silver like @Thomas. PLease. !) but would look pretty poor with Black/White Roval branded wheels (I think?). So do I go Specialized, to match the Roval, or something else I've not discovered yet? I think I want Red/Black/White.

Yep, just Tarmac before it. It was originally called a Specialized McLaren Venge and later Specialized S-Works Venge. I think it was released around 2011 - I seem to remember Cav riding one and he was at Sky from 2012.

Picked her up! Went for a quick ride when I got home with all my new gear on :D couldn't help myself. Only did 5km as it was dark but was practically dying after that anyway lol. So unfit

There is a 56 frame Cervelo S3 with 11 speed ultegra that looks to be brand spanking new going for just under 1500 on ebay. If I didnt have a few parts coming in for my BMC id be snapping that up.

I'm with you on the Propel - it generally looks great out on the road but the front brake and rear cabling routing is rubbish.
Other aero options - Ridley Noah SL, Boardman Air, Scott Foil, Canyon Aeroad and the Merida Reacto are all good options.

The Wilier Cento1 or 10 is the costly hand made Italian aero option.
