Road Cycling

Haha oops, scratch that idea then! I was thinking of using it to kinda support some lunges

Pffft! That's back in town (after regrouping and stuck at a junction & 2 sets of traffic lights before then getting separated by traffic), this section here is the 'fast' (racey) part (17/18 miles until 23). The 21+ mph bits, not the 12mph bits! I'm not as fast as Jonny on social rides... ;)

So it's a make your own finish line kinda race ride? :D

I know all too well how bad it can get on a 'steady' club run when people start to push the pace. Although, in my experience, it's not the racers who do it - it's those who've never raced and therefor just treat every ride like a race.
Haha yeah that's pretty much our social ride, the faster racer/club guys tend to ride the other club rides so our riders/group all tend to ride together, several of us the same ability with numerous regroups as we regularly have newbie riders along.

Our 'Saturday social' will only occasionally have a 'race back to town' (depending on route, that one section being the most frequent). That section of road is the end part of one of the popular TT's around so quite quick with a slow junction at the end to regroup before generally riding back into town semi-together before getting separated (slow traffic from then onwards regardless of route).

So it's a make your own finish line kinda race ride? :D
Obviously! Finish line is only when I've been pushing hard and beaten people! :p

I've avoided going on my local club road runs because I'm annoyingly in-between their silver rides and their gold rides average speeds - I don't want to get involved in a group too slow, because it's just annoying, or too fast - because I'll die. Silver runs at around 14mph average, which is probably a touch too slow for me I think, gold runs at a solid 20 mph average (although I hear conversations at the club that seem to suggest it's more like 22mph). Although the demented part of me is tempted by the gold just to see how long I could hold on before I have to flag down an ambulance. :p

That's a pretty large speed difference! We're 15/16mph average and the 'fast' group is only generally 18/19mph when there's enough faster riders for it. Which isn't very often these days, as there's other 'fast' group rides run by other clubs on saturdays. They're still only 19 mph average (3 others I can think of). The fastest I can think of (outside of the chaingang) are run by the the local race club (ELY) of mostly CAT3 & 4 riders (only a couple of CAT2's) and their longer 'sunday club run' would be 20/21mph average over 50/60 miles (when not away racing). The saturday 19/20mph is used as a primer ride/leg loosener for those racing sundays.

'You only get faster by riding with faster riders' is definitely true, I tend to plateau (form wise) when just riding the 15/16mph social and commuting. The Zwift racing, occasional after work ride with friends and weekend hill hunting are the only things which stretch me, none of them are regular enough at the moment. The rest of my riding could almost be called 'base' riding with the occasional effort. That's kinda why I need to get into TT'ing, the tuesday night chain gang or just mix up my weekend group rides with some of the faster groups.

Sounds similar to ours. Our 20mph ride has a 'if you're dropped, join the other group' policy. People know that and only come with us if they are going to stick with it.

The 18mph ride is much more disciplined, and sticks together etc.

We have many riders who come along on the 20 and just sit in and do nothing all ride. If you want to progress, you have to rip your legs apart from time to time in my opinion.

Absolutely! Worthwhile progress will only ever be found outside the comfort zone, riding inside your comfort zone is pretty much just treading water.

I might try the gold at some point and just see if I can hold on whilst they get warmed up - even if it's just for 5 miles.

You should have stern words with the committee and insist that the 14mph group becomes "bronze" and a new "silver" ~16mph group is formed.;)

Definitely not a day (or tomorrow) for nice bike riding in the mild temp drizzle or worse, but if you can get past the psychological barrier of heading out, it's not that bad to ride in.

Southampton's two biggest hills, both messed up by red traffic lights, then a ~5 mile flat loop where I randomly tried to stay in 7th gear where I would normally be in 5th or 6th on the inclines... Commute home mileage more than trebled, almost quadrupled. Still down ~6 miles on this time last week and unless I can get over the psychological barrier of choosing to go out in the drizzle/rain, that might be it until at least Thursday, unless I try and squeeze in a quick loop after dinner today and before the rain returns at ~2000. :/

Here's one for touch... Guy from my work took his bike (a 1990's steel 'Simonsinii' or something? 8 speed!) around north wales last week, totally solo. Rode there from near Ledbury. 438 miles over 5 days, slept in fields and 'at the side of the road' without a tent (just a plastic tent 'lean to' - "to keep the worst of the rain off at night"). Ate in cafe's, pubs and from shops. Slept in a friends garden 1 night (he was going to surprise them and they wheren't even home!). Not bad for a 54 year old who only got into cycling properly the last few years! He's a proper out doorsy hardman though, needed to be in the strong winds and rain we had last week. North Wales would've been even worse than here! Nuts! :o

Yeah, the two larger 'fast' rides around here generally have a 'slow' group following which'll pickup any dropped/punctured/lost riders so the first doesn't have to stop.

Only exceptions would be the smaller group rides, Gannet and the Tri Club, both high pace but they regroup at various points to regroup.

Tuesday chain-gangs are 'drop back' but the last group don't wait, if you're dropped and can't get back you're on your own! The Thursday sutton ride is similar, they'll wait/slow a couple of times but if the latter part of the ride generally dropped & meet at the finish.

I might try the gold at some point and just see if I can hold on whilst they get warmed up - even if it's just for 5 miles.
Well worth it, treat it like a 'hang on as long as you can' ride! :D

Argh. Got home this evening and heard a telltale hiss from the front wheel. Can't be arsed fixing it tonight so tomorrow I can:

A) Get up early and fix it. Lol.
B) Ride a different bike with a rucksack. I hate rucksacks.
C) Drive. Tempting.
D) Ride a different bike and buy lunch in the canteen at work. Hmmmmm.

All of the above?

Am I allowed back in here yet?

I smashed it on a the local 10 which is actually a 9.5 TT due to road works at the moment. Hilly course and a bit of wind tonight but happy with 24.06 compared to my previous 26.40 on the full 10 course.

Beat a few guys on TT bikes which is always good, think the fastest of the night was a guy who only does TT on his P2 was a minute faster going by strava.

Awesome! Proper audax style. I'd like to do a multi-day audax event like that carrying my tent or bivi next year. Havn't decided which one yet though.

That sounds a bit retarded, granted my club is quite large and is able to run (and provide weekly routes for) 5 - 6 different speed groups.

12-13
13-14
15-16
16-17
17-19
and often some 'long' variations for the top groups setting off earlier. Some groups have as few as 2 or 3 riders and others up to 20. We don't give them poncy names after precious metals mind ;) all non-drop rides and newbies to the club are recommended to pick a slower group to begin with unless they are reasonably experienced.

If not particularly fresh I'd always say pick the slower group and sit on the front and go hard up the climbs to make it more challenging or if you've not ridden much that week pick the faster group and chew the bars

Yeah yeah. Claim it's a TT all you like but clearly you just smashed another social ride ;)
