Road Cycling

Thanks chaps, I really have no idea what people are like in bike clubs, never been in one. it's my observation that most seem to have better kit than me! I'm just gonna have to suck it up and join a Sunday social ride and see what's what!

You get a mix of ages, talents, wallet size and attitudes to various things. Cycling is no different to any other 'group' sport in that regard.

Find a friendly club and it'll be fine :) You should be able to join them for a few rides without having to pay.

I've ridden with a few that weren't unfriendly but rather not particularly welcoming. They tended to be more focused and competitive/race orientated.

Clubs with local town or county names are more likely to have an eclectic mix of personalities and abilities vs those with 'team' names.

I'm actually a member of a club the town over which is 4 x the size of a standard British Cycling club which is 50 members. With over 200 people in it there's always somebody riding somewhere in the week and they're very well organised. For the weekend social rides there are always several different speed groups and they all set off at the same time in the same place and all head out (to begin with) in the same direction. The more capable riders use the higher groups and go further with more climbing. If you find the pace a bit much at the start you can just drop back and be collected by a slower group.

All the rides finish up at the start location for coffee & cake approx 2 hours 25-40 miles later

Hey guys,

Just back from a 'Spring Service' after a very long and messy winter and I'm being advised of my need for a new set of wheels... at this precise point in time I'm looking at top end of £300. Might be swayed to go just over

I'm a pleasure cyclist at heart, so not competitive. I do a few events each year and a whole lot of road commuting. Any recommendation from use or experience?

Thanks.

I'm mulling over buying a pair of Prime Pro Disc for £270 before British Cycling membership discount at CRC, instead of spending ~£400 on a pair of Campagnolo Zonda C17 Discs, or an offering from Hunt.

The Primes are only 1450g, ~450g lighter than the Fulcrum Racing Sport DBs that came with my Cube.

Those of you who use leg warmers, are you combining it with winter shorts or are you using you summer shorts?

I don't own leg warmers, just knee warmers and knee UV screens.

Depends entirely on the temperature as to whether I wear thermal bibs or summer bibs and warmers or screens :o The screens keep the windchill off without causing me to cook and are light & compact easily.

If it's less than 5 degrees normally I'll opt for the warmers.

Depends on the temperature / how wet it is. I have some fleece lined shorts I sometimes put on if it's a bit colder but if it's nearer 10C summer shorts are fine. Generally, if it's cold enough for the fleece lined shorts I'd rather just put on fleece-lined tights though.

Good to know, thank you.

I suppose i should invest in some good shorts and warmers seens as we are getting closer to spring and struggle on with my Aldi tights that the zip has broken.

My question has come from finding out my favourite 'summer' jersey is actually a Roubaix style which got me thinking that perhaps I should look into arm and leg warmers.

If you're commuting and not really looking for aero gains then I'd look at getting some mavic open pro rims built up. Bullet proof for the Uk roads.

I have tights on most of the bloody year here, can only remember a handful of days last year I had only shorts on.

They aren't the thickest but I'd rather be too warm then too cold.

Easterly wind is cold but it's a bright sunny day here, just under 2 hours pedal with a customer. Thought I'd never been on a bike before when I left the house with my head still spinning from last night.

Got a lucozade bottle thrown at me for being two abreast, after being single file for the last few miles on a twisty section. Cheers big man.

So your winter tights are reserved for the coldest days during winter. That gives me enough to plan some kit.
Winter tights are usually Mon to fri ride to work with summer shorts underneath and potentially leg warmers if its that cold.
Only got the 1 pair of winter shorts so these are saved for the weekend as they're rapha and are bloody comfy
