Road Cycling

Delightful club run today, one of our guys was taken out by a van luckily only slow speed so no bike damage and minor bruising, the van wing mirror was knocked off. The Van driver just drove off, as we were just phoning the police, luck had it one came down the lane we were on, had to wait about an hour as the original was only a pcso.

Eventually turned up, gave all details etc as it was registered quite a way away, paperwork will be sent for the owner to admit who was driving at the time, then goes from there. Up to the rider who was hit if he wants to do anything though.

I was ride leader for our group so got to fill in the delightful paperwork!

That's ridiculous... I never really have trouble with van drivers, the least courteous seem to be the SUV/Chelsea tractor brigades.
Unless he's looking to seek compensation then I guess there's little point going any further.

Heavy legs all last week, could've been from the higher miles week the week before, but I think more weather and lack of sleep related. Without any additional weekly rides outside of commuting I was sceptical of doing the usual 100km sunday morning Zwift session. I'm glad I did! Last minute tweak of saddle instead of warming up solved my knee issue. I dropped saddle by 3-4 mm as thought I was over-extending slightly (had increased by 8mm before). Left nose/angle as it was, but moved forward a few mm using KOPS (my usual cause of knee pain is this, not saddle height). Half way through the ride I felt a twinge so sat a little further forwards for a few miles and it seemed to clear. Great ride and once into the flow I was feeling strong. Did several keeping/chasing back on efforts, then several long/strong tows in the last 10 miles to try and drag the group along and the finish time down. Emptied myself but still felt great and able to cruise and recover at 2.5kg after 3.5-4wkg pulls again and again. Just call me Stannard. Proper domestique duties haha! :D

2 hours 36mins, so 6 mins over the planned, but bang on 2.5w/kg average. Had a load of fun and legs totally fine for all the usual family weekend stuff afterwards - dog walks, kicking footballs and trimming hedges lol

I'd say an F felt frame would be as stiff or stiffer than a cervelo R - and won't crack round the bb.
The R5 is closer to the geometry of Felt as its so racey the R3/2 are higher stack and shorter reach.
Ah, I thought the Felt F's where more of the 'do it all' kinda bike and I know the Cervelo R's are known to be super stiff. They where one of the stiffest but that was probably from back when they where one of the real aero road frames and now the rest of the industry has caught up...
Re shoes I broke my left foot in 4 places years ago and it sits quite proud where the buckle is and the pointy bone to the left sticks out a bit more than usual. The buckle pushes against that, I've had to go 44 for space but I feel the toe box is too big and my big toe gets chaffed a bit unless I realllly tighten the front velcro strap.
Worth wearing a different size on your left? Have occasionally seen different sized pairs on the Wiggle ebay page. I wonder if you contacted a shoe manufacturer if you could order an individual shoe?!

On the subject of canyons....
Jonny the mobile Canyon repair man! :D

Leg is ok, although appear to have gained a bruise to the inner part of my shin overnight!
Haha weird where you pickup bruises isn't it.

Can I use this thread to ask for tyre recommendations? Or I should start a new thread? I've got 700c 35c at the moment and I'm wondering about something fast, for road obviously in a 32c or 28c? (Need to go and see if rim width is written on the side of my current rims - Boardman HYB 8.9)
Conti GP4000 SII are fantastic. A little pricey but the premium go-to of most of us. Quite soft so grippy, but generally well wearing and fairly tough. Great summer tyre. Go 4 Seasons if you're looking for something a little tougher, still soft and a great tyre. GP 5000 if able to go tubeless.

Yea, they did a test didn't they. The bonus of a 28 is that you can actually run it at a lower pressure, which is more comfortable, but then you lose the benefit of decreased rolling resistance. Its a bit rattly at 95psi on 28s but hey
28's @ 95PSI. OUCH!? Can't think I ever rode mine near that. My go-to was 60 front 70 rear. Great compromise as I found anything much below 50/55 they would burp air and really drop pressure fast.

The crank arm on the De Rosa was my fault. I did a check before I went out on it, but missed the 2 bolts on the crank arm. Ended up spinning it round up a hill and it came out. Rounded off the spines though in the process. Like I said, it was a cheap old one anyway and it had rub marks on, which annoyed me as everything was new, so secretly pleased I'm having to change it. At least everything will be nice and new now.
Argh, wrecked that then! As you say - good excuse to change it out! :D

I'm fat and running panniers most of the time at the mo and I only put 75-80 in a 28
I'm getting old and my arse needs comfort, commuting & leisure riding, running 32mm tubeless front 40psi and rear 50psi. It's still a little high for rough roads but fast and extremely comfortable! :D

Question is... Where's best to buy used parts? I have been looking on eBay but very reluctant to buy off there really. Not really in the market for new as then it becomes more cost effective to just buy a new Force 22 equipped Planet X!
The 'bay tends to be overpriced, Facebook buy/sell groups are generally cheaper but much harder to 'trust' as no feedback etc, but can find local stuff easier.

Pinkbike forums always came up as a trustworthy place to buy/sell bikes, unsure how much components come up on there though.

Since 'roady-ing' increasingly I find myself wanting a road setup
Isn't it Roadie-ing?! :p

As the others have said - that's a hit & run regardless of the speed. Leaving the scene of an accident at the very least. Needs throwing the book at him - next time he'll kill someone! :o

EDIT: Epic quote post, my longest for a while lol

Picked up a new toy today. I was getting fed up with my 520, especially as the battery seems to be dying and barely lasts a 6 hour ride anymore.
Looking forward to the routing, something I've never really had on a head unit (yes I know the 520 did some basic stuff). But the ability to create a route online, and then quickly and wirelessly transfer it to the head unit, to then have easy to follow instructions (and corrections if you go off route) was a big appeal.
Setting it up was a welcome relief too, as you do everything on the app, and barely touch the unit itself! Looking forward to the ride home!

First 'not so sure' observation is the buttons (3 on the front) seem to engage in an odd way. And they don't seem to all have the same response. The 'click' is noticeably more pronounced on the right button, and the other two seem a lot more muted/soft. I'll have to see how I get on while I'm actually riding as opposed to sitting at a desk!

I have a 520 and about to upgrade, I have a 530 in one shop basket with 15% off and £50 cash back and a Roam in another shop basket with 10% off, it should be easy to save £100 and get the 530 but I dislike Garmin’s due to years of grief and a terrible UI but have read so little about the Roam outside the DCR review and that’s not glowing...

I want to buy the Wahoo so very interested in why you did and how you get on!?

@Shimmyhill - I think I've got tired of Garmin too, well their Edge units. I've had no real issues with my Forerunner so far.

The main gripe I heard DCR saying was that the UI was a bit slow to respond. I'll have to see how this goes. The buttons do seem a bit of a concern, as they seem to need quite a bit of pressure to click. Not sure if they seem winter glove friendly either. I'm sure it'll be fine when I'm out and about. I'll see later on as I'm KOM hunting this evening :D

Only £61 for the pair after 10% off at Halfords, click and collect. Will be off out soon to test them, although riding with a slower friend, so maybe I don't get to see how quick they are just yet.

Update for you all, I went to have a look at the Cervello on Sunday, excellent condition, 12 months old but had only been ridden 5 or 6 times as the guy who owned it had suffered an acciedent (not bike related!)
The bike is basically brand new, so I bit his hand off & the bike is now sat in my garage.

I'm ordered a new set of Prolite A42 Bracciano to replace the stock Shimano RS10 wheels, as I already have a set on my Felt. Not the lightest of wheels but I've found them bulletproof.
The 105 (7000) groupset feels good, compared to how I remember it from 6 or 7 years ago, so I'll stick with it for now until I need to upgrade to Ultegra (8000 groupset)

The bike itself feels firm, I would say a slightly firmer ride than the Felt, but not by much IMO, Cervello certianly feels a shorter bike but that just may be how it's currently setup as I've only ridden a few miles to work on it so far.Looking forward to a longer ride tonight after work.

I'll pop a couple of pictures up later once the new wheels are on :D

Welcome Wahooligan Brother! :D

Strange, the buttons on my original ELEMNT are all the same and feel the same. Under the rubber cover you do have to press them fairly solidly to register a press but they've never got 'worse' so always assumed it was by design under the quite hard rubber so it was a definite 'press'. Have no problems with them in winter gloves, but wouldn't want to be doing lots of accurate pressing with them.

Mine is sluggish, no way around admitting that. But then I realise the ELEMNT is quite a little unit with a basic screen so probably quite limited processing power/memory throughput/bandwidth. I say memory bandwidth as I'm sure it's got worse as the unit has got older. Equally, with all of my commuting I've racked up an impressive amount of activities so mine sync'ing through the app is very buggy as the android app keeps 'not responding'. It does eventually operate and continue 90% of the time providing I don't force close the app.

Browsing mine (MTP device on PC - pro tip for any 'lost' part-activities, they're there!) I have 1317 activities (.fit files) on my device. It probably needs 'clearing down' but I've never investigated a way of doing it.

Mine is the original ELEMNT and I don't think I would describe it as sluggish. Maybe it's because it's on an old fashioned black and white screen, but everything seems to happen instantaneously. Buttons are reasonably firm in a reassuring way I think.

I don't have a power meter on my bike, but if you do I'm sure you can have it on your layout. Yes to live segments. Love that feature.

it's pretty pointless upgrading from 105 to mechanical ultegra unless you're doing it as parts wear out. di2 on the other hand...
