Road Cycling

Minor! Looks quite meaty! :D

Sound's & looks.... sweary! Although a trail?

yeah strava routes wouldn't route over that bit, just over the top is a tarmaced B road which doesn't show up on openmaps, Bolt had me in the middle of a field :) the climb up is on old tarmac with loose bits, if you slip or stop then that'd be it.
I'm trying to build up to my mates 220km ride over there which takes in a few more hills and heads more North I think

it's just funny trying to get in big climbing days in the UK without hitting the lake district or deep whales. SE London climb day I found from ridewithgps https://www.strava.com/routes/12643915

Indeed. Whats gone on there then? Exact same moving time as activity length. So no rest. Average 15mph. Doesn't drop below 14 nor goes above 16.

And all of the other riders which he rode with have the same dodgey rides too. In fact, they're all identical, and two guys managed to ride two bikes on separate routes at the same time!

That looks atrocious!

Nice! Might have to go find that one as not a million miles from me (around 35-40), just a bit of a PITA to get there from the north. Might be why even the 5-6 riders I know from Ross & Gloucester area have not ridden it! :o

If we're segment % epeening I'll raise you my steepest local: Bredwardine Hill (but I think that 40% is inaccurate, it's 30-35% max) and then there's the local hill climb favourite: Capler.

But lets be honest, anything over 20-25% HURTS and with ramps like that in the middle of Haresfield you really can't carry speed onto them. They become a test of your threshold/anaerobic endurance at crazy high power levels & low cadences. I must get out and ride those two again as according to veloviewer I've not ridden them for far too long (2 years!) :o

Haha, thought people would like it. There's two very steep routes up Haresfield Beacon from the north-ish side and that's the worst. The alternative is easier but not by too much. The steepest section while unlikely to be 40% is almost comically steep, where it's so OTT that it's almost funny in a sadistic way that only the likes of us would understand. It really is a nearly all-out effort on that particular section, and there's no room for error. Demands all your concentration and power, I had a 36t front ring with a 32 rear at the time and needed it, though I may have eventually dropped to the 28 once I'd ridden it a time or two, can't remember.

Bredwardine looks quite similar in length, elevation and the steepest section!

Worth a trip to the Haresfield one, there's some good riding in the Cotswolds nearby. Plenty of tough climbs, but the land between there and the Severn is very flat and great for mile munching. Good scenery and loads of nice villages too. Right next to M5 J12.

Ahh quite a 'traditional' width. You'll probably find any lower than 85 will lead to pinch punctures on most UK roads, although that's very situational and use specific. Try it and see, just make sure you have spares with you! ;)

Cheers. Can always think about another wheelset in the future but like the bike as it is currently (Attain GTC Pro Disc).

BTW, do you ever ride towards Gloucester way? Used to get up to Ledbury which is about half way. Great rural shires!

Yes and no. Sometimes I think I can't be bothered going for a ride, but then once I'm out all my stress goes away for a couple of hours. I'm currently in a 'ride all the time' phase, but that's because I've bought a beautiful new bike that makes me want to get out and ride every time I look at it. I am in no way saying you should buy a new bike!

I know that within 2 minutes of leaving the house I'll be fine. It's just that effort of getting changed I think!

Yup! Get your gear on while mulling it over, set the wheels in motion.

It's all a start mate! Steady does it, confidence takes quite a bit of riding and time to build, yet seconds to lose. I'm still building mine back up slightly after getting run off the road a week ago, close passes make me twitch (had 2-3 since) where before they really didn't. I'm super nervous of my commute now and hearing a tractor behind as I'm convinced my luck is going to run out. They don't bother me anywhere else! Horrible feeling but nothing time won't solve.

Hope the guy you came across was all mostly ok, shocking state of many of the road surfaces across the UK, you really have to be careful. :(

Yeah I've had a few close calls on the country roads around here with tractors and cars in general. Last night one approached on a road only a car width in size but I saw them well in advance so just slowed down and stopped to let them past. A wee wave and i was back on my way. Thankfully nothing too hairy!

As for the guy, I found out this morning when my client phoned in that his pal had damaged his shoulder socket, only got seen at hospital at about 11.30pm last night to be told he'd be in a sling for 2 - 3 months!

I skipped tonight for the bike, but will be back out tomorrow evening and increasing the distance marginally.

I had a chest infection back in march and my lungs still feel scratchy and small when I'm really putting my (very limited on the best days) power down. It's a proper drag.

Important to remember that it's s leisure activity and if it isn't working for you, don't do it for a bit...

I think most people are the same. I couldn't be ****** going out tonight and the headwind on the way out made it worse, managed to get round the full loop and feel good for it now.

Last touched my bike last Wednesday and had a heavy night on the sauce on Saturday, absolute fear on the Sunday and licking my wounds from falling off a little tikes cozy coupe(apparently) flying down a big hill near my house.

- Also I need to fix the bloody things every day which doesn't make you love cycling!

Can anyone recommend some bluetooth non-noise isolating earphones? I used to have some wired Sennheiser earbuds that were secure in your ear but allowed in ambient noise but I'm struggling to find an equivalent wireless version.

My back has been properly shagged for the last week and a bit and back to commuting has meant carrying a backpack and often my macbook, which isn't exactly light. KMs dropped last week and now need to get some time in to increase them but new job means longer later hours. Ugh. Will no doubt hop on zwift for some more late rides to top up.

Brutal/mega (delete as appropriate) Zwift CVR race last night. Final in the season and I managed to sneak a 4th place! Report to follow in the Zwift thread.

Lost one of the little rubber 'toes' off one of my cleats at some point yesterday so clipping in isn't great. Annoyingly that cleat is only a month or two old!

Yes, certainly stressful things like that have a knock on effect on your motivation, yet in reality being able to get out on the bike would probably actually solve some of your blues!

House stuff is an absolute nightmare, nearly everything is out of your control, yet has such a huge impact on your life/future/wellbeing. At times it can really feel like an uphill battle, all I can suggest is to not sweat the small stuff, the big things are worth your 'worrying' but the small stuff can lead to feeling like you're overwhelmed by 'problems'. Don't let things like garden fences/neighbours/parking/decorating/van hire cloud your judgement and make things seem impossible. Even the money to a certain extent - who cares about £150 for an extra van/days hire, or £50 liability cover on your sale when you're spending £200,000 (or whatever). :)

It's a great area, Gloucester is unfortunately not a direction I've ridden! Have got out Ledbury direction a number of times, usually on the way to Malvern.

Where I am (Hereford) we've got Malvern (British Camp etc) to the east and Hay-on-Wye (Gospel pass) and Wales to the west. The north has the Shropshire hills (Clee hill) and the south has Abergavenny (The Tumble) and Symonds Yat. There's that much good riding around I've only travelled further out south to Chepstow once and ventured into the Welsh Marches when visiting/staying with family. I'm really spoilt for choice, Hereford being in a bit of a bowl means there's good flat riding all around with quality hills only a few miles further, in every direction! :)

I am in no way saying you should buy a new bike!
Yes you are! Doooo it! :D

It's just that effort of getting changed I think!
Have everything laid out. I always do before weekend rides but only so I can get a little bit of a lie in, spend time with my little 'un and then still only need 20-30 mins to do everything I need to - showered, changed, fed, kicked tyres & set off. I guess commuting every day helps with that - I've got specific places for all my kit, so there's no wasted time 'looking' for things.

As for the guy, I found out this morning when my client phoned in that his pal had damaged his shoulder socket, only got seen at hospital at about 11.30pm last night to be told he'd be in a sling for 2 - 3 months!
Ouch, he's lucky it's not a broken collarbone, good to hear it's not a break. Shoulders can be difficult things, as there's very few ways to strap/cast them. :(

Important to remember that it's s leisure activity and if it isn't working for you, don't do it for a bit...
This. If you're finding 'excuses' then just skip it and do whatever you want (which is seemingly more important). Often times the weather will decide things for you, but we've had such a dry winter and long warm early summer there's been lots of opportunities to ride.

Hahaha, what are you like! More importantly, where's the video evidence?! :D

Know that feeling... Similar to me & computers. Work with them all day so if one at home is playing up it's one of the last things I wanna do in the evening. The other half has been waiting for me to put ink in our printer for almost a week...!

Everyone seems to recommend those bone conductive ones don't they? Unsure on brands etc tho sorry.

I've a recommendation for cheap wireless in-ears but they're noise cancelling!

I was cycling to work this morning and began to head up a bank, shifted down at the front and the chain seized. Cue 20 minutes of trying to un-jam the chain. I had to take a jockey wheel off to give myself enough slack in the chain to be able to remove the back wheel and was eventually able to get things moving again.

But how on earth this this happen?? It's as though the chain became glued to the outer chainring as I pedaled and ended up jammed in the front derailleur. I can't work it out!

I've had that before, my front derailleur was even twisted due to the force of me pedalling as the chain was caught up.

I think a sticky chain might have caused it. Has it been cleaned recently?

Well that's a new one on me... nice groupset though!

a friend of mine got chainsuck so bad the other day that there was a 45 degree twist in the chain after I TOOK THE CRANK OFF to release the chain from being wedged down by the BB
