Road Cycling

It's now four weeks to the day since I had an abscess lanced on my back, which suddenly turned very angry after being aware of an "innocent looking lump" since Xmas 2013.
Good job getting that sorted, it can be hard to admit to yourself so easily that there's a problem. I had something similar on my back between my shoulder blades a few years back. I caught it and it actually seeped some gunk and it wasn't until then that I admitted to myself it needed sorting. Less than 20 minutes at the GP's and he'd lopped it off and sent it away to be checked (had only gone in for it to be looked at!). Came back clear. But to think for several years I'd known about a lump there and thought not much of it, just kinda hurt it a few times (tight bib straps!) and just carried on. If you've got anything like that guys, get it sorted!

Hot cross buns! they stand up really well to being mashed a bit
Good call, will give them a try when the need arises next, probably not until Sportives are back on... Wrapping stuff in foil rather than plastic I found helped some with the condensation squishyness.

It's not horrific but enough that I know likely another bad wet winter/spring would probably see them off.

I do feel like I have pretty awful luck with them.
You have, but then you're pushing out quite consistent high solid mileage regardless of the weather year round, it takes it's toll. My Disk comment was mostly tongue in cheek, but certainly something to consider in the next future bike idea/purchase. Worth getting some better wheels and other bits for the one you have, get it feeling 'good' and you'll want to ride it more. Fit some full guards or something you can't get on your main ride - some incentive for you to use it in the bad weather or for the dirty & long rides. You won't 'notice' much difference but in a few years time when you've had to buy less wheels you'll look back... ;)

Next year wi be my race winning year.
Which year did you not say this? ;)

Thought the wind would be the biggest danger this evening, how wrong was I. Managed to nurse it home 10 miles.

Picture broken here, but guessing it's the same one as from your Strava ride? Well nursed. Maybe you and @Lethal` can go halves on a set! ;)

The actual ******** on some people and lack of shame is beyond belief. I do not understand why there is anyone out there both sad and loopy enough to head up a lethal mountain pass in gale force winds or go way out of your way to get soaked and ride in a storm for some digital fast times. Absolute bams.
Yup, utterly stupid. Should be some way to flag 'stupid' rides like that from people. Flag the rides as 'dangerous' like you can with segments. Bugs me quite a bit when you've got rides obviously breaking the speed limits of local roads. They imposed a 20mph and put speed bumps into the road through my village middle of 2019 yet riders still compete over the segment there even now. The speed bumps have no lowered part for cyclists and are quite 'long', so those are either massive hops (at that speed) or skirting an edge 1-2" from a kerb to avoid them. Dangerous. I dare not even hit them at 20mph on 32mm wide tubeless tyres.

But that guy going up Na Ba is silly. Something happens then other people are put at risk going to rescue him. Nodder needs to go back to playing golf stroking his mates irons where he can't put others at risk.

Anyone bought a cassette recently, best place for deals on drivechain stuff? Merlin?

Anyone spotted any deals on bikes recently, autumn sale season is pretty much here. But then again we might not see one this year? Inventories are so low and supply still outstretched by lockdown demand?

Got to mirror this statement, Lost a friend who ignored a lump in his back, which led to a leg issue, which turned out to be spinal cancer which spread and then we lost him all within a few years.

We are fortunate enough in this country to not have the financial worry for getting health niggles checked out, so don't be proud and just get things looked at.

50mph winds from the east yesterday.
Some walloper went and got the Bealach Na Ba KOM with over 50mph winds on his backside. He doesn't even hint or suggest he had a tailwind in his arsey strava upload.

Some lad from 15 miles up the road went to a town near me to do a ride out east way at 18:00. It was peak storm then like battering rain and howling wind. So he went out his way to drive somewhere and absolutely blitz it out east with a 50mph tailer and smashed a heap of KOM's off people.

There's a big hole in the market, especially with the incoming Strava price gouging to ~£50 per year, for a new segment leaderboard website to be created based on power and W/Kg. Some riders take great pleasure in KOM-sniping in galeforce winds and then try and make out it was their awesome legs, often while riding without proper power data. I was shocked over the weekend, I got back home to find I'd got a 2nd overall on a ~1.8 mile local gentle incline segment, due to the collosal tailwind and me getting carried away doing 307W average (much more than I should really be doing at mo) for ~5.5mins including ~30secs of unkind traffic lights! :p

It's a Vitus Venon Disc Tiagra so it's got crappy RS170. I attempted to try some borrowed Light Bicycle wheels with 32mm tyres on the other week. Attempted because... turned out the tyre had a huge cut and the tubeless sealant wasn't sealing it. I ran out of time before I needed to give the wheels back.

But really, I don't think the wheels should be making this much difference. A bit sure, but not this much. Perhaps I failed at replicating position on it.

Haha. That was my first thought upon seeing @SoliD's (mention failing?) photo. I'm gonna try loop by bike shop tomorrow.

Best I saw was £38 on Wiggle for 105 R7000.

WTRL TTT last night. Tricky jungle course on MTB's. Quite different. Blew up on the first climb as had been put with a faster group than normal due to low numbers of riders. Still good numbers and back on par with what I was seeing a month ago before my holiday, so good in a way to be getting back to where I left off even though I was dropped.

I’ve tried so many saddles over the year and the one I’ve settled on is the Chinese carbon rail Specialized Power knock-off (EC90 brand). It’s actually a different shape to the Power as I tried a Power and didn’t get on with it - seems in between a Power and Power Arc.
Good to hear, got any more EC90 stuff? I was actually looking at them for a set of handlebars...

As for Superstar - nice. I've got a red lockring hanging around from them. Not sure in the value of coloured chainring bolts considering pretty invisible but can't hurt.
Haha was just an observation, the main thing I was doing was looking for steel ones. With alu I found myself breaking/cracking them trying to get them tight (with grease!) without them undoing. Then found they would corrode horribly after a winter or two and be impossible to remove without breaking. I swapped to steel bolts, using threadlock, could generally tighten them enough to stay put (although they strip rather than break/crack) but have to watch they're stainless as they do rust horribly if not. Even stainless bolts as they'll get marked fitting them rust a little as they're quite often only surface anodised... Can't win! ;)

Horrific! Sorry for your loss. I lost a friend a couple of years ago, someone I'd worked with for 14 years and I hadn't kept in enough touch with to know about it until it was too late.

Haha yeah, VAM leaderboards for uphill segments!

Possibly, geometry would be quite different to your Cube so hard to get right? I've found that between my two (Giant & Specialized), but then that's also quite the problem of '1 bike to rule them all' as you get so conditioned to it that it's a struggle to ride something so very slightly different. I find it when switching between road/turbo bikes after any long stint of not riding both. Goes both ways. Thanks for the Wiggle R7000 mention.

Is anyone else frustrated like me? In the market for a new bike but, not a lot of availability of bikes, frames and components!
It's horrific at the moment, not just the availability, but now prices are being hiked too as demand has been so high for so long. Even Sterling has recovered a bit against the Euro, still not worth buying and importing as think they're both still down on the Dollar...?

I don't think supply logistics have struggled, or manufacture has dropped off, just demand so high for so long that supply lines are just empty.

most bikes are manufactured by a relatively small number of companies out in the far east, the brands book production slots in the factory to produce the number of bikes they expect to need until their next slot comes up. The factories are booked to full capacity for the most part so there's no room for additional production if you have a great year or a new model is a "hit".

Interestingly, Giant are one of the companies who own a lot of big factories, as are Merida, so they might be more flexible in providing stock....

Yeh, was looking to get a gravel bike, the Decathlon £850 one to be specific, been OOS for ages.

Gonna wait until next years model drops now.

So worth the extra £50 if you have British Cycling membership to give 10% discount, 2x10 GRX hydraulic groupset https://www.halfords.com/bikes/adve...nture-bike-2021---s-m-l-xl-frames-389606.html and available to order in the medium frame here in Southampton to collect built up on Monday 7th September.

Interesting, thanks.

The Deacthlon has 2x10 looking at the front gears, what makes the Boardman worth £150 more IYO?

Is the groupset better?

I don't have BC membership, how much is that?
