Road Tripping in the USA!

What do most people do for sat nav rather than paying massive rental fees ?

I get a sim card from www.mrsimcard.com and then just use google maps. Just ordered a lycamobile sim off him for my Orlando trip next year and have orderd sims every year since 2010. The lyca sim offers unlimited data, unlimited sms, unlimited USA calls and $10 of international call credit for $39 dollars.

That's not half bad, but it is still worth having some form of offline maps for the more remote areas. :)

anyone booked car hire with Expedia before? Got our car via them (dollar are agents) with the flight as it was cheapest and specs states:

Air conditioning, automatic transmission, unlimited mileage, Collision & Damage Waiver, Theft Protection, Third-Party Liability Insurance, City/Airport Surcharges, Road Tax, VAT/Tax, Additional Liability Insurance for the U.S. and Canada.

Curious as to whether our insurance/cover etc is comprehensive now. Can cancel car and book elsewhere if needs be, can't seem to find any rental Ts and Cs on expedia

I'm pretty sure it is - everyone (Expedia, Netflights uscarhire, etc) offer UK residents the fully inclusive packages now. Might be worth a call to check though.

For my rental, Netflights were the cheapest and used Alamo, who are my preferred rental agency.

I called the Expedia helpdesk who were as useful as a chocolate teapot and told me to call Dollar. Alamo are great for choice and service but Dollar came in cheapest this time and our driving miles will be limited so just literally want something reasonable size with good air con!

I'm going to call Dollar's USA helpdesk as the UK helpdesk couldn't find my booking so will post any results.

I would be suprised if Dollar USA will help you or even know. Whats included in the rate is entirely down to the person purchasing it - in this case, Expedia.

I tried to modify a UK booking with Budget - different company, sure - with the US callcentre when I was in the US and they had no idea what to do and couldn't touch the reservation without resetting all the options to US specific ones.

If Expedia can't answer basic questions about the product they are selling I'd disregard them and move on to a supplier who can/

Called Dollar USA who promptly connected me to a department which was closed. Will try later, they did recognised my reservation code was a pre-pay one though which was more than Expedia could do.

Found this on both Alamo and Dollar bookings via Expedia:

"An excess may be applicable if hire car is damaged or stolen. Excess varies per car group/hire country. Optional insurance can be purchased locally to remove/reduce this excess. Expedia.co.uk is not liable for such excess or additional insurance provision."

Guess that is standard or do Netflights/Carhire 3000 bookings have no insurance excesses? Can't remember if our Carhire 3k booking had an excess....

/edit: Dollar via expedia states: Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)
Included in the rate. Includes Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Protection.
NOTE: Driving on unpaved roads voids CDW coverage.
Unisnsured Motorist Protection (UMP)
Included in the rate.
Supplimentary Liability insurance (SLI)
Included in the rate.

Can't see me needing much more, it's just whether the excess is 4 figures or not.

There is zero excess on Alamo bookings through Netflights/Carehire3000.

No excess through US Car hire and you can get cheap enhanced roadside assistance too. Think I paid 15 quid for it.

The guy in Alamo in vegas asked how much I paid for it lol
