Road Tripping in the USA!

:p

Just booked return flights to LAX next August, have already wanted to do the west coast road trip and flights came up at a decent price that I couldn't say no to!

Excited about planning and getting things organised!

Rough idea is 3 weeks in a Mustang, LA, Vegas, San Fran and everything inbetween.

Does anyone have the Google maps link of the journey they've done recently on the west coast?

Alamo (UK) quote £626.43 for a standard convertible which I assume will include a Mustang, need to do some shopping but what are peoples experiences with different websites?

Use something like USCarHire or Carhire3000 for car rental. Everything is inclusive.

This is the route I did at the end of July over 14 days. https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?sadd...xNQSg&oq=San+Francisco&mra=ls&via=8,9&t=m&z=7

You've got 3 weeks - so plenty of time to include some of the Utah national parks too :)

That looks a good route. So far things I want to do are;

LA
Route 66
Grand Canyon
Las Vegas
Death Valley
Yosemite Park
San Fran
Route 1
LA

I'm sure I've missed some really great places, 3 weeks is plenty but obviously don't want to spend 4 days somewhere if it's pants and only 1 day in somewhere fantastic.

Do not cut out San Diego! Limit LA to 1-2 days - it sucks.

I did a weekend trip to LA/SD, with only a day in SD and regretted it. I'd have rather gone straight to SD... hence I returned, a month later, for 3 days on the road trip I linked :D

You could even try to visit Lake Tahoe. I visited in Summer and Winter this year and it was great... lots of fun stuff to do including hiking, kayaking, jetskiing, mountain biking and lazing about on the beach/camping.

There is no route 66. I continue to be confused as to just why everyone is so obsessed with a road that's not existed for well over 50 years and is now just the odd fake sign or whatever. There are many many better things to seek out and many better roads to drive.

Kayak.co.uk is a pretty decent comparison site. Bear in mind, you may save a good chunk of cash by picking the car up in the city, rather than the airport.

Thanks, will take a look for prices. Didn't think to not pick up at the airport.

Thanks, will look at adding SD in and limiting LA a bit. It's my first time over their so I'd like to do a few places in LA but with 21 days I've got more than enough time to see everything I want.

Google Maps seems to disagree :p

Is it worth driving out to the Grand Canyon as it's pretty far out from everything else on the route.

It's a very long drive and not sufficiently different from other drives you will do. Best bet is to fly there from north las Vegas airport.

Will look into the flights and add SD.

Anywhere else I should look to go? How long would people suggest in Vegas, SD and SF? I'm not a big gambler or drinker so I was thinking 2 nights in Vegas, maybe 3 (in the middle of the week).

I've also started budgeting for everything, what else did people end up paying for apart from the following;

Flights
Car
Sat Nav
Phone SIM
Petrol
Travel Insurance
Camera
Hotels
Food & Drink

Ours was 3k all in for everything.

3 nights in Vegas is good, gives you time for Canyon. If you do the plane trip you are back on the strip midaafternoon.

I know you went a few years ago, and for a shorter period of time (cheaper time of year as well maybe)?

I've budgeted £50 per night for hotel, flights were just over £550 return each and a convertible (not even a Mustang) is looking like £650-£700 at the moment. Chuck in food, drink, spending money and petrol and I'm at £4k already!

I'll slot 3 nights in for Vegas, I land on a Sunday so that means leave LA on Monday down to SD, a few nights there and then up to Vegas would have me arriving on a Thursday or Friday which isn't ideal.

I did yea. But I doubt it's gone up much, my recent 3 week trip to the pacific northwest was just over 4 and that was with a more expensive flight.

Cool, I know previously you've said just book with Alamo and get a convertible but I've heard they won't be stocking Mustang's anymore...

I can see Alamo and Hertz were within about £20 of each other (£620-£650) but one offered a second driver for cheap.

Any other recommendations when looking for car hire? I'd rather pick up and drop off at the hotel but would travel if needed, I guess I'm just looking for the best price to get a convertible Mustang.

Will look at Quidco and see if they have any deals on.
