Road Tripping in the USA!

In May I drove across the states with a mate, NYC to LA, over 22 days and cost us £600 for a Chevy Tahoe V8 from Hertz. Booked on the Irish Hertz website in euros which was interesting, over £200 cheaper than the same booking on the UK website. Put over 6000 miles on it, ripped a third of the front bumper off and got rear ended by a Porsche in LA on the way to LAX to catch our flights home.

Epic.

That irish trick sounds good, did it include all of the insurance as per the UK one?

Edit: Damn, seems the same price at the moment

UK = £459/week Sept 2-9 2014
Ireland = €544/week Sept 2-9 2014

Identical. :(

Use code '2007052' for 10% off. May be able to go through topcashback for a further 10% off too :)

Scenic Byway 12 is utterly fantastic. Being snowed on in a redrock desert it one of the oddest things I've experienced!

I would really like to do this next year, my favoured trip is built around start and finishing in Denver. Second idea is Eastern Canada. Girlfriend wants to do South Africa :(

To be honest I never use Hertz unless I need to, ie a particularly good deal on a short one way trip, as I find the 'get what you are given' approach far inferior to 'pick your own' at Alamo/National.

I'm in Monterey at the moment, along with a Chrysler 300.. I think I'll take a trip down the PCH later today.

Put the Chrysler 300 thru its paces on the US17 (Santa Cruz mountains) a couple of hrs ago. It was OK. No tip tronic, so it felt it was coasting down the steep decline, rather than allowing me to keep it in a low gear for better traction. Plenty of power mind. Not sure what engine it is. Just an Avis Premium, that i picked up from SFO last night.

I should have taken a photo of my Chevrolet HHR when I went to Washington... But then again I'm glad I didn't, what a horrible car, and it was an "upgrade".

An upgrade from what? A horse and cart?

Do not give an much option of premium cars, they do a chrysler 200 for £667 for the three weeks
same price as hertz premium.

As fox said in the last page, you've not given the exact car, they have a pool of cars in a class and it's pot luck with Hertz.

Just has someone tell me all about their champaign helicopter picnic inside the Grand Canyon, now I'm not going to tell them and spoil their memory of it but that's the scam one right? Has anyone got a link to the info, I'm sure I read it here before. The actual Grand Canyon Vs the fake one? Going to warn the people they were telling this too so they don't fall for the same thing.

Correct, you are not permitted to fly a helicopter below the rim of the Grand Canyon National Park. Any choppers on the floor of Canyons are not in the GC National Park but are probably at the 'West Rim' outside the park.

Me & the family are currently planning our holiday for August this year.

We got married in Vegas and would love to go back, I'd also love to see San Francisco and Yosemite national park.

As such, it looks as though I'll probably end up doing the exact same route you did fox.

Would you do anything differently if you were going to do it all again ? Also interested in any tips you have about places to stay, looking at the your trip it looks as though you had quite a few stopovers inbetween the major destinations (like San Diego to Vegas for example)
