Road Tripping in the USA!

We did okay with the Chrysler Sebring in florida the summer before last, but had to put the roof up to get everything in. We left our luggage at the hotel after that but will probably be a bigger pain on a roadtrip since we'll spend a lot of our time moving to another destination with all of our luggage.

What do end up with if you book luxury sedan ? Its coming out £630 so £80 more than the mustang.

Full size is £430 which is £200 cheaper.

11 year old in the middle back seat, bags either side, job done :p

The boot in a Mustang is IIRC about a third smaller than the Sebring, plus the Sebring is a genuine 4 seater vs the Mustang which is closer to a 2+2.

The Fox route is great, just stay in SB instead of Oxnard :p (finances allowing...)

Also even if you don't have time to do PCH, take the 101 not I-5 from LA to SF, its a little longer but a far nicer drive although PCB is the ideal route if you have time.

Thats the issue really, you need to get the roof down with all the luggage in otherwise you'll rarely have it down as you'll often be between hotels. Having the roof UP on the PCH for example would suck.

You'll end up with a Cadillac ATS, Lilcoln XTZ or similar.

How long are people allowing for doing San Fran to LA and where are people planning to overnight ?

Its a 9 hour drive so quite a treck. And I don't want to stop too early as we need to be at LAX by early afternoon

If you are doing the PCH allow at least 2 nights to enjoy it.

If you are not doing the PCH you are doing it wrong, so do the PCH and take the above advice :p

We're planning on spending Mon,Tue,Wed in vegas (take advantage of the cheap mid week prices)

Thursday in Bishop, Friday in Modesto, Sat,Sunday and Monday in San Francisco.

I was planning on flying back Wednesday. But This leaves only 1 night to do PCH so a bit squashed. Other alternative is to do 2 nights in San fran ?

San Francisco is a great place but I suppose it depends what you want to do whether two nights will be long enough e.g. if you're planning to go to Alcatraz then you might wish to wait for a nice day, it's probably more atmospheric on a misty/rainy day but you don't get such fantastic views of the city for instance.

I drove from Mountain View (slightly below San Francisco) to Malibu in a day but it wasn't all on the PCH and it was rather rushed so I'd not recommend that. If you wanted to make it a couple of nights on the way down then you could consider stopping in Monterey and Santa Barbara - that should split it into easily manageable chunks. I've never stopped in either city so I can't give you any idea about the attractions of them although others might be able to help here, I've just picked reasonable sized places as they should give you a bit of choice hopefully in what to do/where to stay.

Why Modesto? I assume you're going to Yosemite - just drive straight to San Francisco. There really isn't anything worth seeing around there.

Safe bets.

Monterey is nice, and you have Carmel close by. I would recommend visiting Point Lobos for some awesome views and potentially a bit of whale spotting!

Santa Barbara is also very nice - plenty to do and see there.

I did 2 nights in San Fran. It was fine really, especially as you'll arrive in San Fran from Modesto at lunchtime anyway so it gives you 1.5 days.

Then use the extra night on the PCH. You need 2 to do it justice.

I stayed in Modesto, it's just a convenient stopover from Yosemite which avoids a long drive after spending all day in the park, especially as he has 2 hour or so drive from Bishop to reach Yosemite anyway, then 2 hours or so the other side to Modesto.

There is nothing of note there but there is plenty of accomodation, its just a transit stop and a very convenient one IMHO.

Where would you do your 2 nights on PCH ?

First night around Carmel/Monterary is good, its a nice place to start the next day and a nice town to see as well. Laguna Seca is 15 minutes up the road.

The second night will just be a transit stop, so anywhere you can get a good deal. San Luis Obsipo probably?

Still in negotiation stages at the moment but I fancy Colorado/Utah, she fancies Eastern Canada/New England North America wise.

There's some amazing sights in Southern Utah. Here's a few from my trip to Moab area... Zion/Bryce was also great.

Unfortunately I was driving a Chrysler...
