Road Tripping in the USA!

I dont think there is anything I would change, thinking about it. It was a great route.

I drove from San Diego to Vegas direct. Stopovers were between Vegas and San Fran (2 different ones) and San Fran and LA (3 different stopovers).

Route plan at the present

Plan to camp some of the time, surprised that the grand canyon park has camping, 9 days tent 12 in hotels etc.
Taken Foxes advice about Hertz premium but no January sale yet. £650 for 21 days.

I do not advise Hertz premium - it's Alamo Luxury. Hertz Premium will just be an expensive way of getting something fairly average, a high spec Nissan Altima or something.

You might want to consider as well, going from the Grand Canyon to Horseshoe bed> Page (Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam are also here)> Monument Valley > North to Moab > Canyonlands and Arches then round and down Scenic Route 12 (between capitol reef NP and Bryce Canyon). It adds around 100 miles though, but saves doubling back.

So car hire for 16 nights is coming in at £608 at Alamo from LAX via carhire3000

Really don't want to run the risk again, we booked the Chrysler Sebring or similar in florida 2 years ago and got told to take our pick as they all had keys in. Great i thought, only to find a lot full of sebrings :(

Really don't want to pay £600 for a sebring .... worth taking the risk do you think ?

Yes, just call into Vegas and swap it if they dont have any. £600 seems a lot though. Try netflights and uscarhire.com as well (With uscarhire go for Silver Inclusive rather than Silver Basic Inclusive and bizarrely it works out cheaper).

This is in August though. Needs must with an 11 year old. Schools are getting very fussy about unauthorised absence in term time and are now charging by the day.

USACarhire say they won't quote past 31st March 2014. Fat lot of use !

Yes they will, I got a quote with them for September only a few hours ago.

To be honest do you even want a Mustang with an 11 year old? You are never going to fit 3 peoples luggage for a 2 week trip *and* 3 people into a Mustang convertible!

I think it was a glitch, its working for me now. Just did a quote for 16 days in August from LAX and it comes out at £551 for a convertible. But like I said above, 3 + luggage into a Mustang does not go. It was a squeeze for just two of us!

Yea, the 200 is the replacement for the Sebring which is no longer made. Thats the standard convertible class.

But as I keep saying, are you really sure you'll get everything in!? I can't emphasis enough how much of a struggle it was space wise with the Mustang - which has a smaller boot than the Sebring - just for two of us.

With 3 people I'd be looking for a luxury sedan. Far more comfortable for the person who draws the short straw and ends up in the back seats!

They might be 4 seater convertibles but it really only seats 4 in a 'Lets all jump in my Mustang to pop to the cinema' kinda way.

Unless the 11 year old is super tall luggage might be a bit of a squeeze but it will be fine.
