Road Tripping in the USA!

Its not so bad miles wise, I did 2100 on my trip in 10 days, are you planning on going west a little before heading back?

What car you going for this time?

Missed this!

Going to hire something 'Luxury' as she's decided we'll be murdered to death in a Cabrio in Miami, or something.

Also do it the other way round so you drive down the Pacific Coast Highway, for no reason other than its way more convenient for random pulling off for sightseeing. Which you'll do a lot of.

Can anyone recommend any cool towns to stay at along PCH, or other fun stuff to do? I did Santa Barbara last time which I loved. Looking for reasonably chilled out towns with good food and bars - even Wineries if there are any along the way.

Carmel is very nice and high end if you want that sort of thing. Monterery is also very nice.

[TW]Fox, looks like an awesome trip and as I've been questioning you in Vegas Hotels thread you know I'm planning the same :D Sorry for clogging up your thread but was wondering if you could give me the names of the places you stayed in Death Valley (Bishop) and Yosemite?

Thanks pal.

Sure - Bishop was tricky as its basically in the middle of nowhere so I ended up at a Ramada Motel. Then drove to Yosemite and then out of Yosemite staying oernight in a larger town called Modesto.

Looks fantastic, what kinda beehaitchpee do those things have?!

300bhp.

Anywhere that stood out that you went to? Thinking of 2 days in each place excluding Orlando.

The keys are stunning and Tampa was nice but I cannot say I am in a rush to return to Florida. It's just not got anything like as much variety and interest as much of the rest of the USA.

It did the job - you'll get there late after Death Valley and leave there early for Yosemite so as long as the accomodation is clean and safe its no big deal.

You could try Mammoth Lakes, too.

To be honest unless you are desperate to see Disney and friends and theme park it up in Orlando, don't bother with Florida. Parts of it are nice - as I said the Keys are fantastic - but not enough of it is good enough to mean its a better destination than many other parts of the USA.

Also I can't think of a worse transat flight than anything into Orlando :p

It's very different living somewhere or being close enough to visit regularly, though. When you can go perhaps once a year for a few weeks you must be more chosey and for me, at least, California was just so much better.

I had a G37 last time. Absolutely loads of power and it handled really well but the rest of it was really quite poor. It was fun to try but I'd walk past it on the rental lot if I saw one again.

As this thread keeps popping up I guess it's turned into the 'Motors USA road trip' thread.

Just finishing off the planning stage for my next trip - Seattle > Vancouver > Jasper > Calgary > Montana > Utah > Oregon > Seattle.

I'm starting to plan our route but don't really know how to go about it. Where should I look to get the good roads and views?

I just punched it all into maps so far and it give quickest route.

The route you posted in that 'show off all the stuff you've bought' thread was very good with the notable exception of the bit where you went up the 101 highway instead of the Pacific Coast Highway.

Looking at hiring a car in 10 days or so. heading to Vegas with the wife, we're planning on going from the strip, up to the canyon (south rim). Looking to hire a mustang convertible.

Which places would people recommend to hire these from? What's the rough prices too? I know Fox went in 2011, so 2 1/2 years ago, wondering if prices are still the same. It would just be a day hire :)

Cheers :)

This is a really bad idea.

Firstly a one day rental is proportionately very expensive - on a daily rate basis it's far more expensive to rent for one day than it is for more.

Secondly the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is not a day trip from Vegas really - it's a very long way, perhaps 5 hours+ each way. More if you stop off at somewhere like the Hoover dam on the way. It's also not really a Mustang Convertible drive - it's highway driving in 90c+ heat. The roof will be closed for most of your rental.

People underestimate just how far the Grand Canyon is from Vegas.

I suggest you book a tour with a flight from North Las Vegas Airport. This is what I did - got there for 10am, got on the plane, flew to the Canyon, had some time at various viewpoints, flew back, was on the strip again for 3pm. Much better.

Then if you MUST hire a Mustang Cabrio for one day spend it driving to Hoover Dam and around Vegas etc, more relaxed and you'll enjoy the car more.

Helicopters are not permitted to land in the Grand Canyon - the ones that do are actually taking you to 'Grand Canyon West' which isn't the actual Grand Canyon, its a side canyon off the main GC.
