Road Tripping in the USA!

One ways of any real distance will be charged punitively as the rental firms really hate them.

Consider linking a selection of circular trips with internal flights?

If you were going to end up in California I wonder how much it'd cost to add me as a driver for a week then pay for fuel and my flight back to California from New York. Probably still work out a lot cheaper than a one-way fee and I get a sweet week-long mega road trip out of it :D

That or try and somehow link up with someone doing a trip in the opposite direction and meet at your destination or somewhere along the way and swap cars :p

You could try a van.
As people move around the US, they hire vans and trucks for one way trips. The vans and trucks need to be moved around the country to ensure cities aren't left with none.

Just finished 3 weeks in California. My second time.. first i did 2 weeks in a Hyundai Elantra.. this time was 3 weeks in a Mustang. Incredible as expected.

Went with a buddy of mine and we did 3.5k each - with a fair amount of shopping while we were there (over labour day weekend sales..!).

We did the following:

4 nights LA
1 night Newport Beach
2 nights Santa Barbara
3 nights Monterey
1 night Santa Cruz
3 nights San Francisco
2 nights Yosemite
1 night Bishop
3 nights Las Vegas (via Death Valley) with Grand Canyon

Total in accommodation each was: £892

Over half of that was on airbnb.com reservations - only 1 dive and that was Newport Beach but it cost us £30 each for the night.

We did 2200 miles on 7 tanks of fuel ($55-60 a tank) in a Mustang convertible.

I have to go back for a third time.. even if just for the sights and views.. it's just great.

We are going to the USA on our honeymoon

NYC for a couple of days and a couple of days in Vegas then drive to Yosemite and then onto San Fran

Really looking forward to it!

Seems a lot of people on here are doing these types of holidays. I showed the thread to the GF and she took quite an interest, so i think a road trip could be up for discussions.

What's a typical ball park price for 2 people for say 10-14 days? I imagine this is like asking how long is a piece of string, but breaking it down to 2 flights, car hire + fuel/insurance, hotels for 10/14 nights as the necessities, should give a base price to work from.

For my 11 day trip, I've spent ~£1800 so far.
That does include a Corvette Convertible hire car, a couple of Vegas shows, a GC heli-trip and all my hotels with a reasonably expensive hotel for my last two days.
Take out the Corvette, shows, GC heli-trip and use cheap hotels throughout, the total would be ~£1000. Obviously still need to add fuel, food and spending money on top of that.

Are you forgetting your flights in that? Plus if you leave out the corvette you must include the cost of hiring something else.

Without food and gas It's a misleading number, everyone has to eat and it's not really possible to do an 11 day trip on a grand.

We have been back 3 weeks now :(.We spent £3400 for three weeks absolutely everything included, for both of us.

Oops! I did forget to add in the flights. I got my flights for £400, but £700 is probably a more realistic figure.
My Corvette hire is £650, so I assumed half for a normal car.
I left out food and fuel as people have have different requirements.

I thought a £1000 was a bit low.

Looking for some advice on getting to Yosemite from Vegas, we will be going mid April and I believe that the Tioga pass is closed that time of year?

Is it possible to head further north and then cut across and some back down?

I know it will be possible to go around the south side of Yosemite via Barstow etc but apparently that is not a very interesting drive

Looking at the map if we head north up the east side of the park we should get some good scenery on the way?

I just got back from doing 3 weeks, it worked out at £3.5k each basically which was everything (flights, hotels, spending money, some shopping, fuel, food, drink, trips out, passes, resort fees, money at the airport, car rental).

Could have probably saved about £750 each if you don't mind budget hotels and we did eat out at a restaurant every night. I was happy with the cost of the holiday overall.

Just had my time off approved for next year - 3 weeks in August - where do I go?

Thailand - I went for three weeks last November and spent less than £2000 all in, including flights and learning to dive + 7 nights in a 4* hotel.

Surprisingly at the moment neither of us have any interest in going to the far East. Just doesn't interest me at the moment. It'll be USA or Europe I would imagine.

Diving doesn't do it for me and I'd happily spend much more than £2k to do a USA trip again.
