Road Tripping in the USA!

Surprisingly at the moment neither of us have any interest in going to the far East. Just doesn't interest me at the moment. It'll be USA or Europe I would imagine.

Diving doesn't do it for me and I'd happily spend much more than £2k to do a USA trip again.

No worries. I felt exactly the same about visiting the far East until I randomly thought why not give it a go. The US is still my number one holiday destination.

I'll hopefully be spending 3 weeks there next year to celebrate my 40th :)

Where are you going (and equally where else can you suggest for a road trip other than the standard west coast one)?

Utah has to be on the list purely on the basis that every week or so my Bing desktop widget thing will change the wallpaper to this incredible piece of scenery and surprise surprise it's Utah again :p

Still got a week left here. Currently on our 1st night in San Fran. Man, downtown is a dive, still, got Alcatraz tomorrow and the Camaro is holding up nicely :)

Fav places so far: San Diego, Mammoth Lakes (which was literally, amazing) and Yosemite. Start PCH1 on Monday

We've just left San Fran, had a great time. Alcatraz was a good trip, pretty interesting and some marvellous views of the bay. Speaking of views, Battery Spencer has to be the best spot for seeing the Golden Gate bridge, highly recommend taking a look if you haven't already. Sausalito a little farther on from there is a nice spot to head to for dinner as well.

Doing PCH1 right now, staying overnight at Pacific Grove just outside of Monterey. The drive down from San Fran via Half Moon and Santa Cruz wasnt anything to write home about, hoping for better scenery tomorrow on the drive to Santa Barbara.

Slightly offtopic, but Alamo have been shocking throughout the west coast. Issues have included:

Hour long queue at LAX desk as all kiosks were down
No luxury class cars available at LAX or San Diego in either Alamo or National
Engine issues on one of the cars were had
No convertibles available at SFO in either Alamo or National
A couple of staff who were plain rude

Will be avoiding them like the plague next time we visit.

Why does the desk queue matter? With Alamo skip the counter you Go directly to the car without queuing or speaking to anyone?

The queue is a total non issue, check in online, fill out skip the counter and just walk right past it?

I did the whole online check in thing but the confirmation email advised I needed to obtain the agreement from a kiosk. Which were all down.

You then need to do a separate thing for skip the counter. Works really well, I just walked straight to the car.

Did you book a luxury then? What Did you get?

Same for Alamo for me. I did the skip the counter thing but still had to go to a kiosk and type in my Driving License number and put in the card that I used to book with. Perhaps things have changed since you were last at LAX Fox?

However, we did get a Camaro, choice of all the convertibles and coupes actually, and were out of LAX inside 15mins from landing.

We do have 0% oil life left on the car though (it was 10% when we picked it up) and it's now saying that an oil change is due, but meh....

OOI, how do you pay for the GGB now that it's all auto tolling?

EDIT: Found it, you just pay for a period of days and cross as much as you like. Win

If you did actual skip the counter online it prints a counter bypass voucher and you go direct to the garage. It works at selected locations of which lax is one. I used this service 3 weeks ago at Boston.

If you didn't get a counter bypass coupon then you only did regular online check in, skip the counter is a second process you do after.

Booked a Luxury but they couldn't provide so ended up with a QX60 SUV as "the best option available". Tried changing for a Luxury at San Diego the next day but again, none available despite advice that there would be. Therefore ended up with a Camaro as everything else they had was rubbish and we didn't fancy hanging around waiting on the off chance something good came in. Was actually quite a fun car to drive so we kept it until San Fran.

We had a convertible booked at SFO and upon proceeding to the lot, we were advised that they had absolutely none in and wouldn't be getting any that day either. Some rubbish about high demand and a manufacturer's recall had meant they'd had this issue for a couple of days. No apologies were forthcoming, and they couldn't explain why we weren't advised beforehand when they knew there was going to be problem. There were 4 or 5 couples in the same boat just the hour we were there!

In any case, SFO did have a Luxury class motor in so we went with that instead, an Infiniti Q50. To be fair, it's a better and quicker car than the Mustang we had last time we were in LA, and having a sunroof has helped, but it's still not the convertible we wanted. At least we managed to get them to give us a GPS, enhanced roadside assistance, and the return empty option for free, albeit grudgingly.

All in all, highly unimpressed with Alamo.

I'm flying to JFK on the 27th for a two week north eastern holiday.

Whats the recomendations for a trip in that area? I'd like to go to washington, boston etc. I've done New York to death over the years so will probably just go there for new years eve.

Also whats everyones recommendations for corvette hire? I've done mustangs and camaros/ challengers already so it's going to have to be a vette this year.

Have a read of this - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18508756

I've hired a Corvette Convertible for a 11 day trip around California and Nevada. cost ~£650
My biggest concern is the lack of luggage space.

This image http://www.ryanfeminella.com/corvette/trunk.jpg gives an indication of the size of the opening.

This video shows the internal dimensions with the top up.

Ordinarily I would have been able to make my trip with hand luggage only, but because I'll be visiting a lot of relatives and friends that I've not seen for several years I've had to pack some gifts. I'll be taking an old hard suitcase to protect the gifts. The suitcase won't actually fit into the trunk of the 'vert, so first chance I get I'll empty the contents into soft duffle bags and dump the suitcase.

Thanks Tom.

Any advice for navigating the hertz site? I used them last time when I had a challenger and a camaro SS, but not sure what to put in for a corvette

I've just come back from the North East, did Boston, New Hampshire, Vermont, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara and New York City. It was excellent, I thought it would be fairly dull but it really wasn't.

Bad move picking JFK though if you have no interest in New York - very expensive car rental there. My quotes there were 50% higher than renting in Boston.

Corvette is going to be hugely expensive to rent.

yeah i thought that but i had a great deal on flights through BA for JFK only :(

how long were you away for?

Landed yesterday, less than 24 hours later, back at work. Oddly not feeling too bad jet lag wise.

Will put some pics up later once I've had a sort.

Highlights:
San D
San Fran
Mammoth Lakes
Alcatraz (there was an actual ex alcatraz convict there doing a talk so we got his signed auto biography)
Santa B

PCH 1 was a bit meh in some places, but overall a great experience.

Yeah that same ex Alcatraz convict was there when we visited 3 weeks ago :p

I really don't know why more people don't spend time in Mammoth Lakes, it's a great place and had I known what it was like I would have spent another night or two there.
