Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic The Wheel of Time coming to TV

It would be if I wasn’t serious. There’s a lot of whiney old farts on this thread that absolutely hate it yet have watched every episode so far.

I'm confused by the cheap actors comment.

GoT had almost complete unknowns in many key roles. The same goes for WoT, but with the addition of Golden Globe winners, BAFTA and Emmy-nominated Rosamund Pike and Sophie Okonedo, who has an Oscar nomination.

Crap actors (WOT), GOT actors, some of the best actors in the business appeared on it. Seems pretty clear to me.

GOT unknows hmm.

Actor who played Joffrey, had been in Batman Begins. Extensive CV.
Actress Lena Hedley, huge CV of credits, including The Terminator Chronicles.
Sean Bean, one of the most accomplished drama school graduates of his generation.

Need I say more? Most of the unknowns were child actors (GOT) and had a lot of support from some of the best talent in the UK and elsewhere. WOT, not even close.

They certainly don't use the budget well.

GoT was very light on VFX. In Season 1 it was mostly used to flesh out sets, turning a small physical set in to an expansive shot of King's Landing or Winterfell, or The Wall. Direwolves and Dragons received minimal screen time. And it wasn't until the 19th episode that the showrunners delivered a battle sequence.

WoT starts off with a big battle, full of CGI characters, in episode 1. There's (likely) three big battles in the first season. Trollocs, Myddraal, and other fantastical creatures received more screen time in the first seven episodes than Direwolves and Dragons saw in the first two seasons of Game of Thrones.

WoT was always going to be far more action-oriented and more reliant on VFX than GoT. The show needed careful management. Instead, we got episodes of expensive-to-film original content

Episode 4 was the equivalent of Jon Snow arriving at The Wall in Season 1, only to find it under assault by Mance Rayder's army :p An unnecessary waste of a tight budget.

I agree, budget has gone down the toilet. Not sure if WETA (Peter Jackson) was involved, but they are world class, or were. So amazed at how cheap the VFX looks. They could not even get Mashadar right in Shadar Logoth....

do you work on the show?

it has a 75% rating by users on rotten tomatoes apparently.
go read a few pages
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_wheel_of_time/s01/reviews?type=user

it's mostly 3 star and under complaints and seems like a bunch of people who work on the show or people who were paid to write reviews are boosting it

most the 5 star reviews literally read like an amazon review bot, makes me wonder if they target forums too :p

it's a 6/10 first season.... so far for me... sure the 7th episode I think was a bit of a step up from the rest, but this season is 8 episodes only? you can't do this kinda pacing with such a short episode run

even if it were better the casting still brings the rating down. I don't see how anyone thinks the casting is good it's like the casting of a low budget BBC series..

BBC often do good though.. wasn't "The Last Kingdom" a bbc series? or did they just buy it from another company.

even Merlin seems better shot and better cast than this.. and that was 2008 probably on a shoestring budget

Moan, moan, moan. Stop watching the show if it bothers you so much. I’m gutted that it’s just eight episodes long though. Hopefully the subsequent series will be longer and won’t just be one series a year. The reaction to the series has been typical of obsessed fan boys where the tiniest deviation from the books is a blasphemy.

What's so great about it particularly?

I hope it gets good but it won't if people don't tell it like it is and try to fanboy it up because they fancy one of the cast members or whatever.

The show needs to improve if you wish for a season 3

I caved and caught up on it. Too big a fan not to watch I reckon.

I am trying to ignore all the stuff they have got horribly wrong but I just don't understand some of the changes, a lot of them seem pointless.

The 'Aiel' bit was cool, looking forward to seeing more of them come into it but thats a while away (Unless they mess around with that a lot)
I quite like Rand.
The blight felt wrong.

Just to balance out my apparent intense love of WoT, one thing that really niggled at me was the constant reference to any one of the four kids being the Dragon Reborn. Nope, nope, nope. The Dragon Reborn was always going to be a fella. That's why the Red Ajah exist!

What?

GOT was chock full of long time accomplished actors.

Charles Dance was in it FFS, as was Diana Rigg, Sean Bean, Liam Cunningham, Ian Glen, NCW, Lena Headey, Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage, Aiden Gillen, Natalie Dormer, Stephen Dillane, Michelle Fairley, Iwan Rheon, Julian Glover, Ian Mcelhinney, Carice van Houten, David Bradley, Ciaran Hinds, Donald Sumpter, Jason Mamoa, Jerome Flynn...

If you go through GOT's cast list, the number of established actors is almost endless.

WOT has literally two actors who could hope to be included within that company. The adults were almost all established actors, the kids/younger people were not that's also clearly a conscious decision.

WOT is a bargain basement attempt to be the new GOT, Bezos reportedly asked for the next GOT, this isn't it. If this is what they do with classic fantasy, and I've never read, or intend to read WOT, but i'll still happily accept it's an epic fantasy classic, then god only knows what destruction they'll reap on LOTR. That has the potential with Aamzon at the helm to be a total disaster, i'm really pleased they canned their LOTR MMO.

Anyone else thinking this is an absolutely fantastic series? Great cast and great story! Can’t wait for the next episode!

Yep! Absolutely. I am a huge fan of the books and I am loving the show. It's like getting the see the story again with a few twists and changes, another turning of the wheel perhaps from the books we read?
