Robert Kubica has suffered "serious injuries"

Very unfortunate for him. Does anyone else think this may be the end of extra curricular racing activities for f1 drivers, or is it a case of the new testing regulations in F1 meaning teams need their drivers to stay sharp in whaever motorsport they can?t

Yeah, good luck.

Do you honestly think you could keep F1 drives away from all non F1 racing activites or having fun at all?

They are racing drivers, they live to race. If they sat around all winter twidling their thumbs I would question there motives for racing at all.

Kubica has often said that if he wasnt an F1 driver he would be a rally driver. He loves it, and so should be able to do it. He is also not stupid so is aware of the risks.

I wish him all the well and hope he recovers fully. After his Canada crash this should be easy for him to recover from.

But the suggestion that F1 drivers should be kept away from racing outside F1 is just stupid. And you wouldnt be able to stop them if you tried.

They log countless hours on simulators and spend everyday working on their fitness, which is a job in itself. Just look at Jenson Button, he seems to be doing a Triathlon or something everyday according to his Tweets.

They don't need to be racing in between, I'd also argue that the simulators they have are far more useful than racing in other classes of motorsport that aren't Formula 1.

From what I've seen there aren't many who do any racing in the off-season, so I'd always assumed that they were largely prohibited from doing so anyway.

God knows what he was thinking on the eve of a big season for him, F1 drivers are so secure in their little tubs and they shouldn't be taking un-needed risks like this. :(

He was living his life... you're not really going to judge him for that are you?

Such a shame he will miss the season. I hope he recovers to the same level.

tbh it doesn't look like he'll be back in F1 this year.

good luck to him though, motor sport is dangerous.

don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he can't have a life out of F1, however he represents a big investment by his employer and his remuneration is testament to this. Surely he has a duty to them to not put himself in a position of potential danger other than those that he is paid to do.

Of course he doesn't, or none of the f1 drivers would do what they do. It's just part of F1, simulators will never be enough for the drivers thrill level and real driving keeps your eye and reactions in, regardless of class. probably all sorts of promotional and sponsor deals combined in the contracts so they can do exactly this.

Renault have confirmed that Kubica's hand will not be amputated and that it's unlikely he will be fit for Bahrain. #F1

Kubica is currently still in surgery. Whether he can actually regain use of his hand is unknown, and will not be determined immediately. #F1

First heard about this while I was having a quick break at work via afew tweets. Not a great deal of info at the time other than he had been involved in a high speed accident during a rally. :(

Really sad news for himself, the season ahead and for all the fans. I have much love for him and had high hopes for what he could achieve this season. He stood upto that massive crash in Canada really well and I hope he can recover from this in similar fashion, but seeing the pictures and the nature of the crash its not in the same league. Even if they can successfully sort his injuries the rehab on his hand is going to be the main issue, rebuilding the strength and movement could prove difficult. Fingers crossed for him.

Jesus. I spend a day away from the computer and this happens.

Lets hope he recovers and doesn't rush back to the cockpit while still not 100% fit.

Driver situation, Petrov and Senna? Whats the betting they'll be dropping a line to Nick Heidfeld soon.

I would imagine his rallying is also a large investment for the teams he drives for and the sponsors on his car.

If they dare to put Senna in the car and then try to mention anything about Senna in a Lotus in JPS colours they will destroy the little credibility they have left.

Probably won't be known for a while. After reading the reports though, it sounds as if it will be a very long time (if ever) until he gets normal use of his hand again. Given the number of controls on an F1 steering wheel these days, that is a huge problem. This is without all of his other injuries. As least it is looking like he will pull through. It sure has been one long operation!

Crazy how he came off so bad and co driver was un hurt.

If you look at the pictures, you can see why, barried ripped through the car on his side!

Hopefully he will recover, but from the early reports, it doesn't sound like he will unfortunately.

Well, he should recover, but unlikely to make a "full" recovery - certainly not for a long time. The pictures really do scare the hell out of me, he was lucky it didn't take his head off tbh. Just another reminder of the dangers of motorsport and how amazing these guys are.

What is interesting though, is that reports are saying that it happened on the way to the event AND that most of the other drivers just drove past and kept going...
