Rocksmith 2014

I'm thinking about getting this (assuming it works with Bass, getting an electric soon anyway). I have the choice of PC vs Xbox360. I'm guessing PC is the better solution? Also do you need the real tone cable or will any 1/4" to USB device work? If not where is the best place to get the cable.

i have had guitars in the passed, never got the hang of it using guitar pro and random vids, got rocksmith yesterday and really impressed. I nipped to my local music shop and got a 2nd hand electric guitar for £35 so not a massive outlay.

Regarding the none real tone cables, i have normal 1/4 to usb from last time i had guitar, it doesnt work on the pc version of the game. I got the game and cable for £42 from shop to but thats for the PC version.

If you're learning i highly recommend having a look on youtube for justins guitar, im watching those vids and rocksmith, changing between a-e, d-a , d-e chords in one minute changes i've increased from just below 20 changes to little over 30 in a good two days playing. according to justins guitar you should be able to do 60 changes.

Is Rocksmith good for bass players?

Can you play every song on bass or is there a more limited selection.

Ta

Does it teach you the very basics like chords etc? I'd be starting from scratch.

yeh teaches you the very basics, down to how to hold the guitar etc. It does have an option for bass guitar but don't have a base guitar to test it. you get the option of lead guitar, bass guitar and rythem guitar.

I'm having fun with this. Its a lot more accessible than the original. The menus are clear and you dont feel forced to go on this journey thing, it just gives you suggestions and you can do them or not. The mini games are great a sort of retro 3d look.

It has full bass support and I had a hell of a lot of fun with the last game and am really enjoying this one. There are some lessons with basic technique stuff but they aren't great, they would be fine if you have an idea what you're doing but not much use to someone starting from scratch.

Certainly a recommended purchase for bass alone.

Wrong, This game has taught me how to play a Guitar and now I want buy a Bass RS1 was ok and the new version is amazing with the amount of learning that can be done.

If anyone says tabs are free I'll cry tabs are hard to pickup from scratch, The way RS makes you play is the way forward from tablature I have only been playing guitar since RS1 came out on PC last Oct and I can ssay if you want to learn buy it glad I did. :)

as above it does help but i'd recommend combining it with justinguitar on youtube, he's a really simple tutor and i've found he's taught me some bits rock smith hasn't so far.

The game is good fun just a little disappointed by the song list. Would have liked to have seen some more metal songs and some RHCP as well (but that is more of a Bass thing). I guess it just easier / more fun to be playing a song you know well already rather than random ones you don't.

Volume of your notes seems very low. I tried turning down game sounds to 30% and leaving instruments at 100% but didn't help a huge amount. Tried turning up the volume of the "microphone" in control panel but I found there was a lot of extra noise. Maybe I need to replace the batteries in my Bass.

On a funnier note, I didn't realise the notes eventually disappeared if you were playing the song well. Got a little caught out on a song I had never heard before when they disappeared :p

wonder when you start mastering the songs, must take a bit, the highest difficulty i have managed is 50 something % on one of the easier songs. Radio heads songs good, does go on a bit though. played not stop play for 10 minutes and then extended it a few times.

it really just teaches you how to play the game. There's nothing wrong with it but if you wanted to play a song it'd have to be available on Rocksmith!!

Ok you've been playing for a year, Ive been playing bass in actual bands for 20 years and I really don't think I am wrong here.

As builder says, it teaches you what you need to know to get through the tracks in the game, you will learn a few songs but without a proper grounding in theory it won't make you a musician, just a parrot.
There's a hell of a lot more to being a guitarist or bass player than a piece of software like Rocksmith will ever be able to teach you.

It's just a learning tool, though. You're speaking as though it's supposed to be be all and end all of turning you into a fret-shredding on-the-fly solo monster.

It teaches you technique, offers plenty of exercises to build speed, stretching, finger placement etc. and also includes learning tools for scales and chords etc.

That sounds like a pretty good starting base to me, which is what your original point was saying it wasn't. You've just changed your argument to say that it won't make you a proper musician -- but what does anyone learning guitar for the first time do? They pick up a few exercise and tab books and get playing. One could actually argue that Rocksmith is better for the beginner than it is for the experienced player, though 2014 seems to have improved a bit on that with the new backing band system (though I haven't tried that out yet to see how well it reacts to your twiddling).

I think the lessons within Rocksmith teach you more than just how to play a song. The lessons go through the basics such as how to hold a plectrum and others... I only started to "play" guitar when this game came out the other day and I feel I have already learnt a lot.
