Really hope this lives up to RCT1 and RCT2 as opposed to RCT3, there's been a real lack of tycoon games recently and I'm starved and ready for a new one.
Wouldn't mind a new Zoo Tycoon either or a new Theme Hospital.
Such simple games but consume you for hours.
We were spoilt for choice for a good while, probably got milked too much, and then there seemed to be a real shortage of anything.
The Maxis Sim [title] series genre disappeared so they could focus on virtual dolls-house in The Sims. We had Theme Park & Theme Hospital, RCT series, and a few others along the way (airports & zoo's etc). Not sure i'd count the Sim City, Transport Tycoon or Tropico series in the same area, a different sub-category of the genre IMO, like Anno or Settlers are.
Just found a pretty good list of games actually:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tycoon_games
Looking at that list, its not that theres been a shortage of tycoon games, its just a lack of real games, cos so many of them are just shovelware, IOS standard of games with 'tycoon' plastered on them and a dozen sequels.
Im assuming you both have Prison Architect though? That brings back loving memories of Theme Hospital in particular, its quite simple and yet complicated and interesting. I've barely touched it since i bought it (Nov) but im constantly checking for video updates and love every one they do and seeing what they've added to it.
Before that, RCT3 would be the only true Tycoon type of game ive played, and thats 2004-05 (inc addons).
As for what little was shown in that video, i didnt look at the snippet of actual game footage and get disappointed with how it looked, IMO it looks perfectly fine, they have to have that realistic but cartoonish quality to them IMO, i think photo-realistic would just look poor and lose some of its charm. Ignoring the quality of the game, just visuals, SimCity was a perfect example of what i expect from these sort of games.
I liked the fact that the park felt mostly paved, with grassy areas. It just feels more realistic, its been a good few years, but i definitely recall Disney World, Universal, Busch Gardens etc, and Alton Towers etc they're all predominantly paved with grassy areas, simply because of the foot traffic. They're not fields with paths, and while theres nothing to stop you paving a large area, that tiny bit of the game felt right to me. Its a tiny aspect, but it was right. It probably helped that they were rounded, rather than square boarder plants etc.
