Rooney doesnt sing!

It used to be back in the 1900s to 1960s (!) but players get a wage now.
The old players played for nothing and made their own way there.
It's all about money and nothing to do with patriotism.

They get a 'match fee' to cover expenses and 'bonuses' based on results. All England players donate their bonuses and fees to the England Charity that disperses the funds to charities nationwide.

This is a reply given by Rio Ferdinand when asked about getting paid when playing for England: “I think it should be a privilege, but in the England team, we give all of our money to charity. And we don’t get paid what we get paid playing for our clubs – let me just remind you of that. It’s not a large amount, and the money we get through our match fees now go into good causes that we disperse among loads of different charities. So it’s a step in the right direction I think.”

So I beg to differ.

If that is true then respect.

why did they even pick rooney? thats not his fault. he's not played for man utd for a week or two yet capello thrusts him into a starting spot for the national team?

how about find someone else whos playing regularly and on form?

Who cares, it's not like the very vast majority of the public know the words either.

This...tbh its not only Rooney but a lot of other football or sports people that dont sing the national anthem either...its not only exclusive to the national anthem of this country..i see a lot of other countries and their sports people not singing the national anthem.

Big deal really...

That is great if true, but it's not quite as clear cut as that. Being in the England team (esp if you're high profile) leads to other income through sponsorship, public appearances, publicity which helps book & DVD sales and so on.

At the end of the day the England players CAN donate their direct fees to charity because they don't NEED the money. In Ferdinand's quote he says himself "it's not a large amount"...

Still, I'm glad charities benefit.

Land of hope and glory would make a better anthem.

I have to say when i was younger i always thought land of hope and glory was the British national anthem.

Ie the welsh had one, the Scottish had one, the English had one (god save the queen) but hope an glory was everyone's "British"/uk one.

It's a damn sight better than god save the queen.

Got to agree with this IMO

How many people actually know all the words?

Very few know the second verse. I don't.

I didn't. :D

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.

O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Nothing wrong with it:

is it though ?

Its our bloody national anthem for pete's sake

Am i alone in expecting players representing our country in sport to be belting it out as opposed to just half ****'d attempt and murmuring it ?

I don't think many care these days. I mean, is it really such a good thing to celebrate and be patriotic about this country anymore?

They can also choose NOT to play for England and receive the amount of vitriol they get that they do not get from their club supporters, because they DO NOT need the money.

Which means, in the main, they play for the pride of wearing an England Shirt and not the financial gain, which is limited at best.
