Rosie Jones

As others have said, comedy is massively about timing, delivery and all the little subtle arts. I couldn't get through a single joke because it took so long and had no flow or punch to it. Perhaps her material is good but without the delivery it just falls flat.

There aren't many truly funny TV comedians, male or female. Each has the occasional moment, but I don't find any of them laugh out loud really.

The best ones are good on their own shows - Paul Merton and Ian Hislop on HIGNFY.

Jimmy Carr, Jon Richardson, Sean Lock (RIP) on Countdown.

It's the team combination and silly/un-pc content that makes it work though.

Victoria Wood stand up wasn't funny, but her TV sketch writing was brilliant.

I had never heard of her before so watched some of her stuff. It wasn't funny to me.

I think, in order to identify - to me at least - why it isn't funny, I have to attempt to define why I personally find something funny. For me, laughter is the appreciation of an intellectual process delivered with speed. If somebody leads a story in but takes it a different way or twists it or makes a good pun, or says something inventively shocking, laughter is the response: the appreciation of the quick-witted and cleverly unpredictable.

Now, if this is delivered with very slow speech, it makes it easier to think about what could be coming or even to guess the end. The comedian is supposed to have the upper hand, to have you in their palm and to surprise you. Now, if you can predict where the lines are going to go, it becomes boring and that element of surprise is gone, as is the humour.

I've definitely seen a bloke with cerebral palsy do some good standup live, the timing can certainly be better, this one isn't too bad in terms of that, albeit the material is pretty basic open mic level stuff:

In the interests of gender balance. Alex Brooker. What an unfunny ****. Every time I'm flicking through a TV guide and I see the name "Brooker", I'm like Yes! This must be good, Charlie Brooker is involved. But then mere microseconds later I realise there is an "Alex", and I am literally crestfallen.

Only semi-joking. Actually, no, I am not joking in the slightest.

I don't mind him in certain shows. Can't remember if I said it before but stand up is ******* hard and its much easier to be funny in a group on something like a panel show.

All that said though, hat's off to Josh Widdicombe going on The Last Leg, with whatever he's got*

* Shamlessly stolen from Stewart Lee's ********* routine :). With the starred out word there being winter based precipitation.

She doesn't get laughs out of me and often I'll watch something different if I see she is on there. I don't have any issue with her I just don't find her funny and a bit of a chore to watch.

She's no doubt funnier than I am and also much braver than I ever would be but as a comic she just isn't my cup of tea

I've tried watching this becaues I want her to do well.

It's just hard to watch as the delivery is too slow. I know she cant help that but (good) comedy is delivered quickly otherwise its generally ruined.

Comedians such as Michael McIntyre, Jimmy Carr, Kevin Bridges, Alan Carr, Frankie Boyle, Joe Lycett all deliver quickly so the jokes roll on from each other and tell a story. That doesnt work if its slowed down to 0.25 speed... Maybe its just not my style

If we're talking about worst 'popular' comedians then for me it has to be Russell Howard, that one is about as unfunny as cancer. Andy Parsons isn't much better.

For me the ones that I think are the best right now is Bill Burr and Dave Chappelle, with an honorable mention to Jimmy Carr, love he does the most offensive jokes and somehow gets away with it, and the way he deals with hecklers is brutal :D

Andrew Schultz is good, stand up routine is pretty decent but his crowd work is 2nd to none. Been on Rogan a few times, although the Netflix thing he did a few years back was awful.

I wasn't referring to general comedians at that point, I mentioned Alex Brooker because he is disabled, and to be clear I'm not *really* bothered about the guy, he is not totally unfunny and I am generally being facetious, just as I'm not really that bothered about Rosie Jones, they are after all doing their best, but I do genuinely become sad whenever I mistake Alex Brooker for Charlie Brooker :(

But, as far as the thread goes, then this probably is just about the right time for it to veer off into general rubbish comics :)

Interesting you mention Stewart Lee. He's been around a long time now, and I think his material is absolutely brilliant. However its still not laugh out loud funny - I would instead describe it as very clever satire.

There is not anything out there that I could describe as laugh out loud funny. Entertaining yes, clever yes, satire yes. Laugh out loud, can't control myself funny? No.

he's on a par with that james allcaster fella, both are terrible.
Whoah whoah, Acaster is ace, Repetoire was absolutely genius, and Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 was very good too.

As for lady comics, I actually prefer the USA offerings.
Iliza Shlesinger, Whitney Cummings and Taylor Tomlinson I find good.
Nikki Glaser and Ali Wong are a bit hit or miss, but generally ok.
Amy Schumer suck balls though.

You do offer a lot to make fun of.

Apart from a few notable comedians I'm hugely surprised there aren't more right-wing comedians. Liberals and the left literally live in Clown World and is open to having the absolute **** ripped out of them. There's some fantastic and brutal humor and take downs on certain websites but shocked it isn't more mainstream
