Royal Mail Strikes for the Next Two Weeks

erm, they don't fire you. i think you'd be asking a bit much for them to be filling in your timecards as well. Moses99 has already said he isn't striking, the reason he is sitting around being paid £7.50 an hour is because even though he'll be at work because everyone else is on strike there will be nothing for his department to actually do.

haha just had a mental image of the miners strikes where secretly they were still all picking up their pay cheques every month.
 
i'm pretty sure they get paid by the unions but not RM for the time they strike - be some way to recoup some of their subs to the union i suppose. i play footy with a load of posties and one was talking about it last week. i might ask him tonight and clarify.

it makes me laugh though, it's clear they need to modernise to become competitive (though i accept the cherry picking argument and don't think it's been handled right) in order to survive. the argument the unions bring about how managers always get paid shed loads of cash compared to other staff is preposterous! welcome to the real world i say.

yes as I have my sales are on a 'Fast Delivery Promise' and they are using that as a get-out clause, I'll have to end up re-listing them again and paying extra fees and also hope I actually get buyers again, either way it's a pain in the backside and very distributive, I know people that are waiting for very important correspondence ie letters that confirm work placements etc, either you work for the post office or just haven't experianced the problems this kiind of strike action causes, all over a job that requires just pushing through bits of paper through a hole in a door :rolleyes: .

It's a bad time, Moses99p, and I don't envy you working in a mail centre during all this. I work a relatively small delivery office which thankfully has no real union presence, but there's still a bit of sniping here and there. We were visited by a CWU rep a day or two before the first strike, I was mightily unimpressed by his attitude.

I'll be out delivering on Saturday, as will a fair percentage of my colleagues, so at least some people will get their mail.

Royal Mail has to sort itself out. It'll be painful, but the good ol' days are well and truly over.

actually with that is there any way to check which is your mailing centre? I live in the DY10 area and was wondering if i fell into either the Wolverhampton or Worcester mc boundaries.

This is all rubbish, i saw 4 postmen this morning, i got my mail at home, we got a delivery at work and when I phoned the local depot (Luton) they knew nothing about a strike! said the only service that would be disrupted is Saturday morning :confused:
 
The whole of RM isn't going on strike throughout the two weeks. Instead different departments will strike on a given day, for example, yesterday the mail centres were on strike from 7pm to 7pm today. The departments that aren't striking will be working as usual. That is why some of you are receiving mail.

I haven't read the thread so please forgive me if it has been stated already.

I found it interesting.

One thing which I think is important is the Royal Mail charter which says they HAVE to deliver to every address in the UK 6 days a week. Even if they make a loss on delivering that item.

If Royal Mail does go under and the private sector does take over... we all know private will not hesitate to drop deliveries if they dont make profit. Maybe only delivering to remote locations twice a week or something as equally silly.

Its OK for me, I live in a town, but I would feel sorry for anyone who does live in a remote location.

I know a lot on here knock royal mail with good reason, maybe im lucky, but ive never had cause for major complaints about them.

This is one service I actually want to stay as it is, surely having multiple companies delivering mail would only make things more complicated?
 
I've got stuff that's meant to come overnight and it's still not arrived (almost a week-9 days late!) :mad:

I hate it when they strike.. but two weeks? bit excessive!

I've just found out what the MDEC's do. Sorry about the misunderstanding. :)

Anyway it was a quiet day (roughly on a par with a light Saturday I suppose), but the management were still able to get a fair bit of mail through the system for delivery.

The strikes aren't well publicised, or understood by the general public though. Everyone who asked me about it couldn't understand the logic of industrial action in this case.

Anyway for those of you who are confused by the whole "Strike" thing. Today was the strike for the sorting staff (who you wouldn't see), tomorrow is supposedly for the Post Office counter staff to have their turn and finally, Saturday is delivery staff strike day. That's when you should notice a difference in the amount of mail you get. Some of you will get it, others will get none at all.

Strikes this week:

  • We anticipate that all Mail Centres will be on official strike on Tuesday 31st July
  • Customers can continue to post items, as usual, on this day but we recommend posting in Post Boxes outside of Post Offices
  • All Regional Distribution Centres (RDCs) and our network drivers will be on strike on Wednesday 1st August
  • We regret that there will be limited delivery services on Thursday 2nd August
  • Collections on Thursday 2nd August will be limited to a single collection from post boxes outside of Post Offices. These collections may be earlier than the normal advertised times
  • We will do all we can to delivery Special Delivery items, but Special Delivery guarantee will be suspended for items posted on Wednesday 1st August and those items due to be delivered on Thursday 2nd August
  • Parcelforce Worldwide’s guaranteed services will remain unaffected
  • Royal Mail’s Branch Direct, Sameday and Door to Door services remain unaffected
  • All other mail services will be subject to delay
 
It’s ridiculous they get paid quite a lot
I remember seeing a advert last year £7..something all you have to do is get up at 4 sort your mail and deliver it once that is done you can go home.

Also selling things on EBay is a pain and I have had one person complain the other day due to strikes

I posted an item via special and it didn’t arrive on its due date and when it did it was past the 1pm guarantee
