RUBIK CUBE - Anyone know how to do?

Dead easy. There's something like 4 simple algorithms to remember and solving is just repetition of them. Used to be able to do it substantially under a minute.

That's because there are about 3 or 4 algorithms to remember for solving any 3x3x3 cube. You just need to evaluate the cube to know which stage you're at. A lot of times you're just looping the same algorithm to prepare the cube for the next stage.

yeah its just three or four algorithms that need to be remembered. easy with practice.

Sort of. You can use edge rotation and corner rotation algorithms of which there are only a few but you're not going to solve it fast. Speedcubers use various methods but there are many, many algorithms to remember and that's what makes them fast, the ability to recognise cases and apply the correct algorithm.

My current average is 20 seconds and cannot seems to get faster because as I learn new algorithms I forget other ones, old brain and old fingers :(

a cube can only be a set amount scrambled anyway.

Correct, unfortunately that set amount is 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 different scrambles. Admittedly, a lot of those are simple rotations but it's still a big number! Funny thing is, it's possible to solve any scramble in 20 or fewer moves, they (Cubers) call it God's number.

They're actually a doddle to do - most people just really overcomplicate.

See :p Can I just apologise for Bjork. There may have been wine involved.

I did it in Junior school :o Got called out for it too. 'Mark, if you're going to play with that in class you can come up here and show us all how to dot it.'

And I did. I was an unusual child. Still got held in at break if memory serves, go figure.

There's two main ways of doing these from what I can see - destructive, and non destructive. Destructive being you focus on one side, but have to undo that side to do the other lines. This is fairly easy (honest!). The other method, doing a side and then not destroying it...Is bloody hard. Have managed it a couple of times but it's taken me hours, as opposed to the former method typically taking a minute or two.

Also, the 4x4 is exponentially harder.

Also, the 4x4 is exponentially harder.

Not really, for all the bigger cubes you just reduce it to a 3x3. Get all the non-edge centres solved, then the edges but not the corners and essentially you have a 3x3 and solve from there. You get hat's called parity on even numbered cubes, 4x4, 6x6 etc, which are cases that cannot exist on a 3x3 because they have no centre pieces, well, they do but they're hidden. So bigger cubes are a bit harder but not much. I actually prefer them, add a bit more challenge, as I type this I have a few cubes on my desk... 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 :) 6x6 and 7x7 are at home.

Mine has been untouched since it was solved many moons ago. Cheating spoils the fun of this great puzzle so keep at it. You may go mad in the process. :p:D

You want hard? These are hard... 3x3 ghost Cube, turns off centre and no two pieces are the same :)

It's just a 3x3 but very hard to recognise where things go. Also, it's a super-cube, meaning the centres have orientation, but where are the centres? On the corners (but not all corners!) on this puzzle but they're still centres. It's a tough one and beginners method is recommended :)

I learnt how to complete a 3x3 several years ago. It'd take be between 1 to 2 mins to complete. I found instructions online. I have a 4x4 that I've never completed even by instruction. I do not think I'd be able to complete a 3x3 today though, it's been too long since I last had a go.

I can do any sized cube. I have 2x2x2 to 7x7x7. I'd have bigger ones, but the price gets a bit silly.
I can also do any size megaminx. I have a teraminx which takes about 4 hours for me to solve. I've had it for years and only solved it twice.
I have tje Ghost Cube mentioned above too, among many other twisty puzzles. These days I only buy the really unique stuff, so maybe one or two puzzles a year.

The trick to working out how to do the Rubik's cube is noticing that there is only ONE correct place for each piece and ONE correct orientation. 8 corners, and 12 edges. The centres don't move.
My 3x3 time is nothing special. A good time for me is about 40 seconds. A bad one, about a minute.

I had one for Christmas... It was a step by step guide.. There are 7 stages and I've completed four.. Which is two layers.. the trouble is it's taken me ages to get that far .. and i'm frightened of making any changes that will mess things up.. so I sit there.. looking at it.. it drives me nuts!!!

damn rubiks cubes..
Have you finished it yet :p

I used to be able to do them. They're quite easy once you memorise the algorithm.

Never understood these world record attempts on YouTube though. Surely they've set the cube up in the right position for them to start the algorithm before they attempt it? Which is a bit rubbish really...
