RUBIK CUBE - Anyone know how to do?

I got given one recently and the missus learnt to do it in a couple of nights..i was worried if i learnt it i would forget something important.

There's a chap here at work who can solve them in like 20 seconds from a completely muddled up state. He is a bit of a nutter though and owns many variations of Rubiks cubes and understands the patterns and moves inside out.

Had one as a kid, never did finish it!

Loved the Rbix Magic though, till a "friend" tried to make it into a shape it shouldn't go and snapped loads of the wires! :(

The trick to working out how to do the Rubik's cube is noticing that there is only ONE correct place for each piece and ONE correct orientation. 8 corners, and 12 edges. The centres don't move.

Not strictly true.
A 3x3x3 cube can be solved with the centres in a different orientation.

I have a 3x3x3 cube where I cut all the stickers into triangles. A correct solution had all the triangles pointing the same way.

You're taking about a super cube. On a standard Rubik's cube the orientation of the centres is irrelevant.

I can't remember the maths or the exact number, but if I remember correctly you are only ever about ~20 moves away from completing a Rubiks cube.

CrazyBadCuber has some good beginners videos. Don't bother with anything except the beginners method until you can do that without help.

For anyone looking to get in to solving it, don't buy a Rubik's brand, much smoother cubes are available for less. Search for Moyu, Daiyan, Shengshou, Qiyi to get started.

I'm hitting around 25seconds on an average of 5 solves using CFOP solving method. Still cant quite manage to break 20s just yet, which is incredibly infuriating.

Mathematically, Gods Number as it's called (by cubers) is 20, meaning any scramble can be solved in 20 or fewer moves.

Most speed cubers solve the cube in many more moves than that. The key is very high Turns Per Second and excellent look ahead and algorithm memorization.

Rubiks cube robot solvers tend to do it in fewest moves. WCA also has 'fewest moves' competitions, but i think participants can spend hours and hours on a fewest move solution

^^This 100%. They are terrible. My favs at the moment are the Valk 3 and the Gans Air. Not the cheapest so if you stick to the brands stated above, you'll not go wrong. I'll also recommend thepuzzlestore.uk, no affiliation but they've usually got a good range with similar prices as to imprting from China, without the wait. Marty Wolfman, the guy who runs it is very helpful too.

My Gans Air arrived this morning. Shaved a minute of my time. Wont break any records but just under 2 mins now. Not bad considering it took me 10 mins when I learned the algorithms last week.
