***Rugby Super League XXV***

I thought Leeds just about deserved to win. Bit of a mystery turnover on the Pauli play the ball that got them into position for the drop goal, but overall the better of the two teams. Deserved a crowd - a good cup final. I hope, for their fans' sake, that Salford get back there in the very near future

GF is on Friday 27 November at Hull. Doesn't really matter where it is I suppose. They had the option to push it back a week at Old Trafford but declined. It's all just limping along now to satisfy the Sky TV contract. If this season was a pet, you'd have it put down. There's even talk of ending the regular season in the next 2 weeks and extending the play offs to include more teams.

On a more positive note, the community game kicked off at junior level last weekend - 5 different age groups played at one of my local clubs. I think its 4 weekends of friendlies with a week in between each one. The open age community game had a trial game on Saturday (Wigan St Pats v Orrell St James), with more games scheduled. Just a pity we couldn't alter the clocks by 6 months at the weekend and fast forward to next season

NRL GF yesterday. Melbourne Storm just don't know how to lose. Great game (40k crowd - 50% capacity), but some pretty dodgy haircuts :)

Some moves today.

End of regular season reworked (St Helens vs les Dracs is off, so Saints don't have to travel), play-offs reworked, KR ending their season (so why do they get to stay in SL when Wolfpack were thrown out? Enquiring minds would like to know!)...

Also, why is Salford's points deduction this season rather than next? Some baffling decisions. If they lose Toronto and promote another Northern mining village, it will say a lot about the game.

I think the new play-offs are the best they could make of the circumstances. They have to fulfil the Sky contract (although the reward seems to be 30% less in the new deal). The killer will be if a team has to pull out of the play offs part way through. I think that nearly happened in the RU final

Salfords punishment is hilarious. Just a total shambles.

Not surprised in HKR calling it a day now. The longer this season has wore on, the less seriously anyone seems to take it. I've barely watched any of it, just can't feign interest in it at all at the moment.

I don't even know where to begin with Toronto. I've fallen out of the loop with it a bit, but either way it was an ugly outcome. No idea who would get promoted or on what criteria. I mean, there are good arguments for expanding the league massively by another 4 teams in my view. There are obvious problems like the player pool, but I don't see any other way of being able to incorporate Toulouse, London, York, etc. without them making losses or just trundling along in the Championship. The last few years there have been some big dogs in there like HKR and Toronto that have (with the exception of London) pretty much put an end to their promotion ability.

It seems harsh to say it, but do teams like Dewsbury, Batley, Featherstone, really stand a chance in SL?

Sean O'Loughlin to retire at the end of the season. Not the force he was 2 years ago (when he could single handedly turn games at all levels), but nailed on for the Wigan Hall of Fame. Just wish he could bow out in front of a crowd.

What happens if Hull FC have issues with Covid this week? Do Warrington get reinstated? What if it happens to Wigan? Do Hull go straight to the GF?

Agreed.

All good questions. Wish I had some answers!

Catalans 12-0 Leeds as I type this. It's frenetic stuff though, proper end-to-end.

***edit***

18-6 after 36 minutes.

***edit 2***

26-14 FT  Next up, St Helens.

Catalans pack looked good - they all looked areal handful. Whitely is very underrated. Sam Tomkins was the gamebreaker in the first half. He can't be far off an England recall.

I think McIlorum and Joel Tomkins might be having a few anxious days before Tuesday's disciplinary meetings. Dwyer was having an impact at the start of the second half until McIlorum gave him a tickle. Old school :)

Sam is a joy to watch when he's in this kind of form. Actually, the whole team is. Mead was excellent. Davies was excellent. McIlorum's kicking game was on-point. But discipline let us down a bit in the second half, and...

That one bothered me a bit less than the silly high tackles that les Dracs kept giving away penalties for through the middle of the second half :) Oh, and I rather enjoyed Mikołaj Olędzki getting minced by Sam Kasiano when Mik completely misjudged a tackle and got the full force of Big Sam so hard that his ancestors felt it :p

Credit to Leeds though, they were a bit rocked to be 18-0 down but came back strong. They were a bit unlucky to be that far down in the first half hour, it was frantic high-pace rugby that could easily have got them some points if the Catalan defence had slipped up or Leeds had gotten a bit more luck with a bounce - as I like to point out to friends in the Perpignan area, la balle n'est pas ronde, c'est comme ça! *miming a rugby ball shape with my hands* :D Doesn't take very much for things to turn in your favour/go wildly against you.

Super League's short highlights:

That start with the break from Sam Tomkins  That 4th try from Mead :eek: That penalty kick at distance from McIlorum
