Rule Britannia or not?

It would be interesting to see if only Rule Britannia is being scaled back.

I think BBC should wake up and realise that the people mostly paying the tv license will probably end up being older people.

No Land of Hope and Glory is been done as an instrumental as well.

Jerusalem, God Save the Queen and You'll Never Walk Alone are having solo singers.

No, Rule Britannia is usually sung by a soloist.
Utter rubbish - certainly as far as last night of the BBC Radio 3 Proms is concerned - clearly you have never watched it.

Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem are staples of the second half of the Last Night of the BBC Radio 3 Proms, whatever connotations a few uninformed people may choose to attribute to them.

. . . I think BBC should wake up and realise that the people mostly paying the TV license will probably end up being older people.
And . . .?
So what, what one earth has this got to do with Rule Britannia or the Last Night of the BBC Radio 3 Proms?
Even if true.

That it was even considered is bad enough. That it was even considered due to the hysteria over the death of a drugged up and violent career criminal in another country is just laughable.

This. The man who held a gun to a pregnant woman's stomach while her house was ransacked and who was later accidentally killed by police has been turned into a martyr. There'll probably be a statue of him erected soon. Maybe outside the Albert Hall.

I won't be derailing this outrage thread, however people are complicated beings and never allowing for retribution is a dangerous path to tread.

I wish to ask this one question, do you believe that generally criminals aren't themselves victims?

I get lambasted for daring to suggest Johnson didn't go on a camping holiday (which turned out to be correct) and yet Fabricant's tweet triggers all the intended people!

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/05/28/proms-no-prommers-concerts-go-ahead-audiences-may-home/

The BBC has announced that the annual celebration of classical music will go ahead this year, but in a very different form as a consequence of lockdown.

Only the last two weeks of the season will involve musicians performing live at the Royal Albert Hall, “culminating in a poignant and unique Last Night of the Proms to bring the nation together” in September.

Organisers are hoping that social distancing rules will be relaxed by then. But their contingency plan will see the audience at home, watching performers on stage.

Even if a socially-distanced audience is allowed in, there will be no place for the Prommers, 1,350 of whom buy ‘standing room only’ tickets on the day.

They are exploring the idea of members of the orchestra at the Last Night being spaced around the stage or auditorium, assessing how practical that would be and how it would affect the acoustics.

You tell me what you think - Are they going to ferry the audience in for all songs bar Rule Britannia?

Uhhh, I don't think so.

Most of the people in the Arena would have bought season tickets for a few hundred pounds or will have attended a number of concerts (six I think?) in which case they can go into a ballot - which entitle them to entry on the Last Night after queuing up for hours - if there is room for all of them. I know this because I did it years ago when I was studying in London.

In the unlikely event that this the BBC and the RAH can allow entry to a limited number of people this year, I very much doubt that anyone will be allowed to crowd together in the Arena, it will be given over to TV camera crews and sound engineers.

That link you've posted is from May.

The story seems to centre around "Finnish" conductor Dalia Stasevska and comments she allegedly made.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
What relevance is that? You think that since then the plan has changed to only exclude the audience for the one song?

From your link...

The concert is due to take place on 12 September but without an audience.

Are you dense?

search any video on YouTube of it at the proms and you will see that a soloist sings the verses.

Ruling the waves , is rather aspirational, with the current aircraft carrier, but, maybe there are other national anthems that hark back to equally nationalistic triumphs.

I'm expecting a protest outside the Albert Hall on proms night, with, a socially distanced crowd of 30, belting it out ...
maybe some well known singers would oblige - can Bob organise something.

Boris - the exception prooves the rule, has got it right.

Ahhhh, the verses, not Rule Britannia then.
No, Rule Britannia is usually sung by a soloist.

ps - I really couldn't care less what YouTube may or may not say; I have been there (and sung) and I have frequently watched it on BBC TV (possibly not singing in my living room) :)

Whatever, it seems that it is not going to be dropped (for this year at least), an orchestral version will be played (with a reduced orchestra) and there will just be no audience present to sing along with your (absent) soloist.

I did quite like the idea of having "All you need is love" at the Last Night of the BBC Radio 3 Proms - seems like a suitable modern anthem, along with "You'll never walk alone".

Oh, that's nice of you.

Oh, you derailed the thread.

Well I don't intend to have a massive argument if that is what you think I want, but I can't merely let anger porn go unchallenged.

Anyway, If we're talking about national anthems, might I suggest we just subsume the US one as we've imported everything else.

They should sing the Spitting Image version of Rule Britannia.

Rule Britannia, Britannia rules not much
Less than the Germans or the French or the Dutch
Rule Britannia, Britannia's not so great
Why can't we come out and admit it, we're third rate
