Rules regarding swearing

I wouldn't, I always thought the rules for videos were the same as the written word. Therefore, if there is a swear word you can't type in a post then you can't post a video with it in (even if it only appears once). I can't understand why the rules for videos would be any different.

I would have thought differently.
You can choose not to watch a video, whereas a word on the page is right there. If you put a NSFW or "Warning SWEARIEZ" with the video, I don't see the problem.

Which i've wanted on ocuk for a long time, if any video contains a swear word and is not tagged NSFW Contains swearing then it should be removed or the member suspended.

For example

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=19009236&postcount=44

Awesome video but guess what, 6.35secs in the guy actually swears and says the S word. Say that word here and it's a suspension, but on a video who knows it depends on the don i guess

Or these Zero Punctuation videos
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation

Every one of those videos contains some foul language however, they are game reviews and on the comedy side.

By that rationale if people wanted to post with swearing it would be acceptable to tag their posts as 'NSFW:highlight below to read' and then post in spoiler text. Or post links to 'inappropriate' images or sites tagging them as such. Even images which are watermarked with inappropriate web addresses are not allowed to be posted. The point of it all being it's supposed to be a family friendly forum and all content is supposed to be appropriate (that was my understanding anyway).

As it goes I'm not personally bothered by videos with some swearing in. However, it does seem to go against what the rules have always been based on.

Suppose you have to look at other things, context in which the word was applied, were you reported and others who used the word were not were not, that kind of thing. Cant imagine that moderation is simple ban without thinking, always seems ballanced in general.

Indeed.

There was a disagreement about the alternative word for penis which rhymes with clock.

Using it in the context of "you're a ****" is clearly not acceptable. If however, it is the name of something, or used in the context/content that isn't hugely derogatory then of course it won't be edited.

We have infractions now which is like a friendly warning, rather than a suspension for minor little mistakes. I think it's a perfectly fair way of doing it - at least then you become aware of it.

Furthermore, it's down to the moderator's discretion - sure, you may argue you don't get even moderating, but ultimately, if you take it too far you'll be suspended. Using a bit of common sense and perhaps pro-actively asking someone if a video or certain content is acceptable first might actually prevent a lot of issues.

If there are things you disagree with - always happy to discuss it. It won't necessarily give you the answer you are looking for but at least you will know. :)

Yes which is one word, I got a short holiday for not staring out "mother" from the famous movie quote!

Whoever did that made a mistake.

I've noticed people saying bloody hell, Sod's Law and bugger on OcUK. I thought they were swear words, certainly back in school. Can someone please clarify?

Do you really need clarification? Seriously?

That's not going to stop people watching the video - it's that simple, we don't want inappropriate videos or content being linked to OcUK.

What would you deem as inappropriate?, if someone was swearing in excitement because he just saw a lightning strike in front of him would that be?

Ok so any video that contains swearing is a no go :)

Thanks

No probs. That's why it's important to vet the vides before you post them ;)

Sorry if it seemed obvious, but I really didn't know.

Well, you haven't been given a warning and neither has your post been edited, so I would suggest it's probably ok ;)

Believe it or not guys (and gals), I don't particularly like suspending or harassing members as I prefer to leave people to interact with one another. However, people go too far without realising, and whilst you may well talk like this or behave a certain way around your peers in person, you need to recall that you have a bigger audience here online, and have the potential to offend or affect many more people.

I was suspended once for disguised swearing, though it doesn't really seem like a swear, yet others at nearly the same time were just warned, it was very annoying but after some counselling I've managed to get over it.

It seems the old adage of life being unfair also applies here.

Which famous movie quote was that?

Thought this thread might be helpful for future members aswell, glad it's not closed !

Funny thing i was on mumble the other night and i got " Why did you get suspended " I said " i swore ", they just laughed

Cheeky ***** :D

To be safe, just don't swear at all? I personally see no issue in that. I have no need to swear at anyone here or at anything. I am sure others feel the same?

5UB that wasn't really the point of my original post :p, it was regarding the videos more than anything
