Running Vista. Gaming a noticable drop

x64 or x32

I'm running x86 32 bit. However my brother is running x64, and I don;t believe he is having problems although i play a lot more games.

I'm buying x64 vista as soon as it's released. :)

Yeah I'm running x64 at the moment and haven't gamed on it yet. It's eating 1GB RAM just doing this, so I may have to drop to the x32 version as I've only got 2GB RAM and can't see much left for games etc.

Been using the 64bit version since before xmas now. The only game that won't work at all for me is Kotor 2, and I think that's an ATI driver specific issue.

So far I've installed EQ2, Eve, Neverwinter nights 2, Republic Commando, Quake 4 (looks crap cos ATI beta drivers don't have openGL support), Battle for Middle Earth 2, Battlefield 2142, Wow, Warhammer Mark of Chaos, SWG and Oblivion.

I haven't noticed any noticable slowdown, but I didn't do fps tests because I also upgraded my cpu from an athlon 64 3000 to a core duo 6300. That alone is probably picking up any minor fps losses I might have had.

As an OS, I love it. So many cool little things in it, once you get rid of some of the annoying defaults (are you sure you want to run this program? It might result in a program running...)

How much RAM have you got?

1gig RAM just running a web browser and a few apps? I'll definitely be steering clear then as I've only got 1gig physical memory.

Would be interested to hear how much it uses on boot from people with streamlined systems (lots of disabled services/options etc).

2GB :)

Very tempted to shift to the x32 version.

Will run x64 for a few days more

Failing that time to add another 1Gb

Mine's using 568MB when idle. It's a big chunk, but it's hardly a gig. Can see how you'd run into problems with only 1gb of physical memory though.

Haven't tried doing any trimming yet, other than turning off the aero interface - doesn't make any difference mind you, I imagine it's stressing the graphics card rather than the ram.

So essentially the memory footprint is around 4 times that of XP, which is quite worrying.

The sad thing is I can see lots of 'normal' people buying new, cheapish systems running Vista but with only 512meg RAM, which is going to chug like hell as soon as they try and run applications. Especially when you consider how many pre-built machines come with all manner of bloated drivers, apps etc installed. And those are exactly the type of computer 'newbies' which won't have the savvy to optimise and cut down on the unnecessary stuff.

As soon as Vista starts shipping on machines in PC World and the like we'll see 1GB standard I'm sure.

Companies like OCUK will be in for a bumper time and RAM prices will go up. Time to stock up now ;)

I've come back to mine after leaving it for a while. House work and things :( and it's dropped back to a similar amount

mind the competitor, i had a very early version running on my old athlon 64 3000+ with a gig quite happily, haven't used the latest one yet but will install it on my new laptop when i get the express upgrade

Personally I would have thought someone with a Technet Plus Direct would have been well aware of the reasons why gaming on Vista is not up to par at the moment. And I cannot understand why a self confessed gamer would want a Technet Plus account. Surely they would want to spend £300 on a new GPU instead. It doesn't add up. A self proclaimed gamer with a technet plus account downloading a "FULL RETAIL" version of Vista to see if his games run on it and then asking if he should go back to XP.... Hmmmm. :D

geez, just sharing my thoughts with other enthusiasts, no need to analyse every word i mention.

FYI, the technet version is exactly the same as full retail, I work in the industry, yes i know vista is the premature choice for gaming but being impatient and wanting to try out new techonolgy i took the plunge. just sharing thoughts with others who've probably tried exactly the same as me, it is a forum after all isn't it?

Ended up dual booting now I'll keep xp for gaming and vista just to play around with. I suggest any other gamer who wants to play with vista do exactly the same.

Thanks & get a life

Why dual boot with XP. Whats wrong with Vista?

I am currently dual booting and get annoyed when I click XP by mistake. :p I am a gamer / forumer mainly. Just curious why thouse "in the know" would not game on Vista?

odd. i can't think of a single reason to play a game on vista right now.

i use it to look at how it works, what it does, development. i wouldn't swap from xp for anything more than 'minesweeper' until things are in place.

are you running ati? I've heard their drivers are more matured to vista than nvidia.. i'm on nvidia at the moment, and the difference is enough for me to have the hassle of dual boot.

n3crius,

I game on Vista because it's my main OS and it would be a pain in the ass to reboot into XP, play game, reboot to Vista. So I stay in Vista and play games as I would in XP.

I dont think thats odd!

thedoc46,

I'm running nvidia 9.6.8.5 driver revision on a 7600 GT. Are you geting lower FPS in vista I take it?

The only problems with preformance is FSX and Rainbow Six Vegas, but thats more coding / my mid/low end card. I would love to be able to run these game on full settings. *drools*

do people really think vista will need 3-4gb of ram? because if so im gonna get 2 more sticks 1gb with my new system and keep them for vista.

The thing that bugged the hell out of me with Vista is the Soundblaster X-Fi drivers produce bad quality sound. I could not get past this to even test the graphics drivers. oh I tell a lie. I tried launching steam and the OS crashed.

The OS itself is very impressive, but I'd not expect reliable 'gaming' drivers till after release.
