Running Vista. Gaming a noticable drop

having problems, far cry seems to be fine. however quake 4 ran fine at deafult (lowest settings) but when i cranked them up it took 10mins to load a game and about 4 mins to skip the opening sequence, sound was way ahead of the slide show. vista has been fine, games with me not so well - even far cry felt sluggish for the loading times. Anyone have any idea why Q4 wont run?

Got C2D @ 3.15Ghz/2Gb/X1800XT with lastest drivers

EDIT - forgot to say havent updated Q4, but is v1 meant to be like this?

Definitely sounds like you may have run out of memory - check what your peak commit charge is after playing Q4 with it 'cranked up'.

I take what I said back about Vista x64 and gaming. I'm having problems with compatibility now and most of my games are b0rked. Farcry 64 have freaky textures and Halflife 64 does not even load. Might just be nVidias drivers.

However Vista x86 was spot on.

quake4 won't run properly because there are no opengl drivers included with the beta ati catalysts. :)

Do a format, and make two partitions on your HDD, one for Windows XP and therefore gaming, and the other for Vista. Should satisfy all your OS needs then, at least until Vista gets some decent support.

This what i would do for now.

So essentially the memory footprint is around 4 times that of XP, which is quite worrying.

The sad thing is I can see lots of 'normal' people buying new, cheapish systems running Vista but with only 512meg RAM, which is going to chug like hell as soon as they try and run applications. Especially when you consider how many pre-built machines come with all manner of bloated drivers, apps etc installed. And those are exactly the type of computer 'newbies' which won't have the savvy to optimise and cut down on the unnecessary stuff.
It's not worying at all, Vista makes full use of the available memory. If you have 1gig of memory I would not be supprised to see Vista using all of it. It is good memory management. I do not understand why people are obsessed with their system only using bytes of memory. You know if it's not in memory it is in swap right? It has to go somewhere. ;)

I've been running x64 RC2 for about 3 weeks now and come across now major issues. I've got issues with my IPOD shuffle not working and my Dell X51v not syncing. But from a game aspect such as RACE I've had no probs with it. It slows down with a full grid on at max res 32bit on a Dell 2005FPW.

System is P4D805 @ 3.3
2GB RAM
7600GT 256MB card
Gigabyte DS3 board
