Newbie here

I originally got a 5700xt but it ran into a fault a few days after I was using it. Tried everything to fix it but nothing worked. RMA'd it to scan, I would've been fine with a replacement but I got a refund instead. Probably because any others are out of stock.

And here I am, looking for something else with my refund money and willing to spend a bit extra for something newer. But literally everything else is out of stock apart from 6800's (non XT). Should I wait a bit or just go for one?

Yeah it is. Obviously a 30 series card is more ideal, and was what I originally wanted, but alas that's not happening anytime soon.

I do think the 6800 is good enough, particularly if it’s for upto 1440p.

It’s just the crazy situation. I also think that over £700 for a 3070 (I did order one but cancelled it) or over £900 for a 3080 / 6800 xt is too much as well. Just my opinion on it though. I understand why things are the way they are and why people are paying the current prices.

6800 is a capable card but the prices are just nuts. Funnily enough here in Poland 3080 and 6800 prices are just as bad BUT 6900 prices are not that much higher than rrp, seeing some for 1100Euros, to put in perspective, a red devil 6800XT is actually more expensive than some 6900XTs!!

God this is insane. I picked a really horrible time to get into PC gaming lol. I've still got my humble 580 from my old pre-build, might just stick with that until things settle down.

Really pleased with my 6800, it’s doing a sterling job at 1440p with everything I can throw at it. But over £700 for one is...pushing it.

Nah, and I say that as someone that got the 6800 for local msrp. It's a strong card but in newer games you feel the lack of RTX acutely, and in older games it's 50/50 whether it's going to be a good performer or not. Overall I regret not jumping straight to 3080 early on even when it was overpriced or at 3060 ti launch when I could've gotten that for a decent price and sold this off.

Imo if you're going to spend extra might as well do it for ampere and with how much better it is at mining during downtime it will earn its money back anyway. Waiting for prices to normalise is meh, it will take another year and it will likely still be more than advertised. I'd rather take the hit & enjoy it an extra year instead.

Of all the cards available at the moment I'd argue that the 6800's are the best value. Some people are advocating buying a 3070 over one, why, for 10-15% worse performance at the same price? People also saying you may as well just pay up for a 3080, what at £1100. Don't be silly.

The 2 Sapphire cards above are overpriced but no other model other than the reference cards were ever going to be sold at the MSRP of £580. So when you are looking at AIB cards the Pulse would probably sell at £620 and the Nitro at £650, as it stands you're probably paying £100 over MSRP for either of these. I'd much rather do that than pay over £300 more than MSRP for an AIB 3080 or 6800 XT. I would not even consider a 3070 at £700+. As it stands in the ridiculous scalper world we are living in these two cards aren't that bad value when compared to what other cards are selling for.

Besides which if you OC and SAM a 6800 you basically get XT/3080 stock performance. Which for me is not terrible value, if you compare it to a 2080 Ti it's incredible, a 6800 is a great card which smashes a card which was £1200 6 months ago. It's £100 overpriced, yes, but unfortunately in the current market it's probably the best value you can get if you look at cost per frame.

Hmm, yeah in all honestly thats basically the level of performance I'd be fine with. I'm not even looking into OC'ing that much, nor am I that bothered about ray tracing.

£700 is still really steep for me, but it doesn't look as if the situation is improving in the near future. I'd be happy to have my hands on any high end card right now, no matter what it is. Still I may as well keep my eye open for anything.

If you would have been happy with the performance of a 5700xt then I would save the money and get a 3060ti nearer its MRSP over a 6800 at that price. According to Nvidia the 3060 will be out end of next month starting from £299 so there might be chance that they will be in stock for a few minutes on launch day to get one. Although the 3060 might not be powerful enough for you, hopefully it will review the day before it goes on sale as the 3000 series has been so far

Fair enough if £700-750 is outside your budget then there's not much else you can buy at the minute, not new anyhow, a £650-700 3060Ti is defo not worth it. You might be better off looking at something like a second hand 1080 Ti or 2080/Super if you're looking at spending £400-£500?

If you were happy with RX 5700 perf then might be worth looking at this.

I have seen 3060ti coming into stock between £400 to £500, although they go quick, a better buy than 5700xt which are often similar in price

Thanks for all your suggestions, I've learned a lot about the current situation. Probably going to keep my eye out for now, but at the same time waiting isnt going to help much.

When I was picking my components, I was first gunning for a 2070 super, but they were all out too. The 5700 was actually my second choice, for its near equal performance. If from what I've read here, a 6800 outperforms a 2070 by a significant amount, I honestly think I'd be quite happy with that. Not about the price though, but hey.

One last thing. Say I took the plunge and got a 6800, would It work well with my ryzen 7 3700x? And would a 750w psu be enough?
