And if Intel actually manages to come out with more than repainted and renamed CPU next year that that Z390 likely won't take it.

For many years CPU development was so slow that upgradeability really didn't matter.
But now situation is different and when upgrading from Haswell I'll certainly put value to CPU upgrade chance.

Will be waiting to see what clocks people can achieve. Not really worth upgrading [email protected] if they are only clock 4.2 ish

This is pretty much the gist I'm getting.
I'd have hoped 4.4-4.6 and I'd have jumped from my 1700.

Reception will be interesting if it's "only" to 4.2ghz

Agreed, though it is only a refresh so not expecting that much.

Good evolution for those entering the platform though.

Certainly makes a better buy in for those on older platforms.

Pretty much viable from anything other than coffeelake.

Hopefully the new boards and bios will allow for an easy 4.3 with 3200 cl14 if not more. 4.0-4.2 would be a bit of a let down. Anything over 180 single core on cinebench or the like would be great, I'd go x470.

This release is the Ryzen refresh though 2nd gen, not Ryzen 2....or have I got that wrong?

It is a refresh on 12nm vs 14nm, yes ^^^

Yeah this is AMD confusing things for us.

Originally Ryzen was just mean to be a move from 14nm to 14nm+. with that it was originally called Ryzen+

14nm+ didn't happen, its now 12nm, so an actual die shrink and so now they are calling it 2'nd Gen.

End of this year, or early next year will be most interesting.. Zen 2 and Ice Lake news, should see some real movement then.

4.2ghz is normal for ryzen (all core)
4.35ghz with custom liquid (all core)

Ryzen was a bombshell. The 1800X chip made Intel's £2000 chip obsolete for 20% of the price. AMD didn't hype anything up. If anything they down play things.

Ryzen 2, based on Zen architecture. Ryzen 3, based on Zen 2 architecture is due in 2019.
