Safari 4 Beta

Just had a play for around 30 minutes and first impressions are very favourable. Very snappy at loading web pages. Also quite keen on the UI too.

Not a big fan at all to be honest. Feels like a rip off of chrome. The images it uses instead of real time renderings of sites in the top sites view is aweful too.

First I've heard. I've not tried it but from the screenies it looks a little too slick although I'm not a big fan of coverflow - I don't think it's as great as Apple like to make out. Supposedly its for the touch/gesture generation but I have an iPhone and give me a list any day.

Just got it :D

My impressions:

The Good

They've certainly used Chrome as an influence, from the tabs-at-top to the Top Sites
feature (with usual Apple flair). They also have suggestions in the Google Search and an "Awesome Bar" like Address Bar like Firefox. Pretty much they've mashed the UI's of Firefox and Chrome together which is no bad thing. Although a little too obvious :p

It's very fast also, and somehow feels more "solid" than Safari 3

The Bad

Having all those previews invokes another process (more RAM & CPU) while it downloads them at each startup. Also if i'm tethering using my mobile phone then this is going to waste data.

Overall, pretty good. Although Coverflow is just overzealous fluff that I could do with the option to disable!

Love the coverflow. Looks really good on my MAC, not sure if i wanna install it on the PC as the wife might see all the Pron sites I visit :P

Been using the developer previews but this is really quite different. Love the moved tabs, don't see the point of the cover flow stuff. Fun for like 10 minutes, but I don't need someone to order my bookmarks for me!

You should try enabling the "Develop menu in menu bar" advanced preference since it allows you to choose which web browser version Safari 4 can be. It might help bypass NatWest's web browser version check :p

Been using it all day and I'm loving it, the top sites feature is handy since you can customise it somewhat to have exactly what you want on there and it's definitely faster. Took me a while to get used to the tabs though, but I'm pretty happy with it now :)

Had a little play around at work, and I am very happy with it. It seems a lot faster (then FFX, yes, but I have a lot of addons for it :p)
The 'wall of screens' is very good, and a slight rip off of Opera's dial thing (which is all good). I haven't used the 'coverflow' yet, though.

What I'm not happy about is that it replaces my current Safari, and i can't run them both side by side, unlike.....well basically every other browser, :( but I do understand as it is like IE and is tied in some ways to the OS underpinnings.

When clicking a link does it open in a new tab or another window?

A link on a page should always open in the same tab unless either the web developer wants it to open in a new tab or you have forced it to (either via addon or by right click context menu).

Do you know an addon that does this please? It seems to be OK in Firefox without an addon when I've clicked open links in new tab, but not on Safari.

Really like the look of Safari 4.
