Safari 4 Beta

Can someone try testing something for me?

In Safari 3, opening a new tab will cause the whole browser to drop the width of the tab bar (if you have no tabs running in the first place).

I.e.

---------- ________

I assume that due to this new tab layout (being as they occupy the outer frame) that this doesn't happen?

I do like the steps they're going to with this though. The screenshots and benchmarks look very impressive as they're incorporating the webkit updates, and it's also the first browser to 100/100 pass the acid test :)

Try it yourself: http://acid3.acidtests.org/

It does not drop, the new tap moves into the title bar where it says, for example "Overclockers UK Forums - Reply to Topic"

I've had it do it the other way, close the last tab and the window shifts up! Very annoying...

I only ever use 1 tab, so I suppose it's the same problem ;)

Just wondered if S4 fixed this "issue"

Impressed so far. Seems nice and snappy, and there's not the lag with multiple tabs open that I was experiencing with S3.

Not sure if I'm keen on the new tab positions though, might take some getting used to. There's a Terminal command to get them back where they used to be if you don't like it though:http://shortna.me/48100

I think its bloody amazing!

Boom. Google

Boom. OcUK

Boom. Pornhub

It's all quicker.

Still slower to invoke than Chrome.
Google search field useless, should just be incorporated into address field.

Search bookmarks in completely difference place to search history (top of screen on one, bottom of screen on the other)

Most annoying:- ALL external links open in new window rather than new tab.

Apart from that its nice and shiny.

BUT that last point about the links means I will not be using it, I hate having to manage multiple windows.

It breaks focus on the Messenger for Mac as well. Type a message, enter, lose focus. Infuriating.

I know the answer is Adium and the like however we use OCS extensively so I need the Messenger client for that. So, nice looking, fast, works well, but breaks other things I need in a way that gives me the absolutely funking rage :)

Code:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true

Type in to Terminal and run the above command, with Safari closed

I've got the latest version of Firefox and I can sort bookmarks by name no problem at all! You just right click --- sort by name.

When I say it doesn't work, actually it does but it just sorts everything by name. In IE it sorts the folders to the top then the links after that. I thought it wasn't sorting originally because it didn't out the folders to the top. Anyway I much prefer how IE does it. Far more useful.

I used the old Safari a bit on Windows. The Safari 4 Beta is freezing a lot for me once I've a few tabs open. So I'll be uninstalling it. Pity because it is fast.

That's strange, because my Firefox puts folders at the top, then any individual bookmarks underneath - this is within the 'Bookmarks' menu option.

I couldn't care less what order bookmarks are listed in. If you know the name, using a keyboard launcher is far faster than fishing around with the mouse :p
