Sainsbury’s and Asda in talks to merge

This has probably been borne out of the Tesco and Booker merger. Sainsbury's and Morrisons have both sniffed around at Nisa in the wake of the Tesco merger. Interesting times for the food retail multiples and Symbol groups or are those lines been blurred?

Tesco & Booker
Sainsburys & Asda
Co-Op have bought Nisa who in turn are supplying Costcutter.
Bestway bought Conviviality

There will be more consolidation in the market place very soon. Where independant connivence stores sit in this is anyones guess.
don't forget morrisons .. they bought or bought into mccoys
and they still own the safeway branding ..
so we could see that again

Could the big four become the big three?

I'm sorry, but it was never the big 4 to me. I live in Stafford which is an average sized town with a Tesco's, Sainsbury's and an ASDA. It has always been the big 3 to me. Yes I go travel about and I have never seen a Morrison's. The only meaning that Morrison has to me is Mark Morrison :p

LOL, there is a Morrisons in Stone, which is about 6 miles from Stafford. (I used to live in Stafford)
Now live in Newcastle under Lyme, and this town has two Morrisons. (still less than 20 miles from Stafford)

Edit: The store finder on morrisions website says there are 10 stores within 20 miles of you

I think most people just go to their closest tbh. I know I go to Asda as its the closest. We have a Sainsbury's in my town but I rarely go there. There's a Lidl and an Aldi too but the closest Tesco is about 8 miles away.

Aye - the muppets could only muster £1.28bn in profit.

They were near £4bn several years ago. Share price was over £4 a share. They then posted a £5/6bn loss in 14/15, had accounting scandals, etc.

Never been bowled over with them. Not the best quality, nor the cheapest, nor the most attractive stores.

Depends where you live!

Within 2 miles I've got 8 large supermarkets :
3 Morrisons
2 Asda
2 Sainsbury's
1 Tesco

Make it three miles and it increases to 3 Tesco Extras...

Plus :
3 Aldi
2 Lidl

Then we get to the smaller metro stores...

Not sure this will get through without some serious conditions from the regulators. The Tesco/Booker deal only went though because they don't compete in the same markets.

This is ultimately end up with three large supermarket chains instead of four.

Where I live we have a Tesco, Sainsburys, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland and Farm Foods.

Tesco is average, Sainsbury's is an order of magnitude more expensive than Tesco but don't really offer better quality over the whole range. Some stuff is better but others are worse and the rest is the same, just more expensive. Their non-food offer is far superior though.

Aldi and Lidl are ever so slightly cheaper than Tesco but have a relatively poor selection of food. I can't buy everything I want so I don't really shop in Aldi or Lidl so I just don't shop there unless I am diving in for a few bits I know they sell. The 50p saving on a £30 shop just isn't worth having to go to Tesco after to get the bits they don't sell.

Iceland and Farmfoods are just completely hateful shops.

That's a very long way of saying I shop at Tesco because it is the best compromise between selection and price.

Not sure about Lidl but from real world use and having seen the comparison stats we get Aldi is cheaper by a rather large margin compared to Tesco I'm not sure how you could manage to not save a noticeable amount on a general grocery shop.

Yes I guess geography is a big factor here. I'm partially sighted/hearing and have been ruled out that I'll never be road legal in this lifetime. So I rely on which is the nearest and which is the most pedestrian-friendly. In the early 2000s, I lived closest to the Stafford ASDA so that was my main place. Mid-2000s and onwards, I live 2.5 miles out on the Stafford outskirts and get to town by bus. Sainsbury's is the most pedestrian-friendly because it's opposite some bus stops. The Stafford Tesco is the least friendly because you have to make a detour through the car wash / garage before back-tracking to the bus stops by the train station. For online though, Tesco is definitely the best, so I use them online and it's good for people like me who aren't road legal.

Morrison's as said by Ace Modder would mean going to Stone.

Interesting debate about ALDI / Lidl though. Stafford has got that new ALDI by the bus station. Have used it several times now and found it very convenient and definitely cheap! Plus, I rate their electrical appliances as well, given that I get a few years out of them. E.g. got myself a digital microwave there for £38 earlier this year.

I accept they are cheaper but they are certainly not by a large margin but it depends on what you buy and if you buy branded or own brand. Some stuff is more expensive than Tesco. But like I said the savings are relatively small for me and not worth having to do two shops instead of one. There are some other major downsides such as no fresh bakery or deli counter.

The only place I see that Aldi and Lidl have a significant lead is on the alcohol, the own brand stuff is far better than anything from Tesco and in some cases is better than branded. The special buys can be good but I always sanity check them as sometimes they are not great.

I dunno. My shop is always significantly cheaper at Lidl and Aldi than the main supermarkets.

ALDI for me which is probably the reason why ASDA are losing so much business. Why would you go and shop with a load of chavs when you can shop in ALDI in a civilised (albeit, hectic at the till) manner. Wish we had a LIDL built next door.

Suprisingly good tools in Aldi as well.

Decent move by ASDA to be honest, but it's a dying brand. Tesco, ASDA and Sainsburys are having massive issues. Basically if you want to go cheap then go Lidl and Aldi (previously Morrisons / ASDA ground), if you want something nice you go to Waitrose / Booths (previously Sainsburys ground).

If only retail was as simplified as you have just made out :p
