How many days before practice does Lewis have to test negative to be clear to race? or is it just the 1 session rule coming into play where if he can atleast run qualifying he is good to race?

FIA rules call for two consecutive negative tests, IIRC, which I think have to be 24 hours apart as well. But the commentators were saying he needs a negative test 3 days before he is allowed to fly to Abu Dhabi which seems to be the more pressing problem.

“It's very much a decision for the Bahraini health authorities to determine if Lewis is fit and complies with their regulations, and then further for the Abu Dhabi authorities to determine their criteria.”

What is not clear is quite why Bottas did SO badly? He normally ends up 2nd or 3rd.

When they cocked up the tyre change, they put him back on the same set he had on when he came in - not sure how many laps he ended up doing on that set of tyres but the process of coming in, losing 30s while they cocked up the change and then going back out with stone cold worn hard tyres (that he had to try and heat up behind a safety car) was never going to go well.

Prior to that pit stop buggeration, both he and Russell had stretched out a significant lead IIRC?

They don't care about anything really apart from the constructors championship. I gues they want one of their drivers to win the drivers but beyond that they couldn't care less how it pans out.

If they continue to have the best car on the grid they won't have any issue plucking a top driver from any team to fill Hamiltons spot.

Basically, the dangers of replacing Bottas with a more capable driver are far greater than any potential benefits it would bring. Imagine another season with 2 drivers who don't get on, won't adhere to team orders because they are competing for the title and who potentially crash and lose the team the constructors championship as a result.
Pretty much my view. There's absolutely no reason to potentially rock the boat when they already have a constructors winning formula and no doubt whoever they have in the seat, the WDC too. After all, if Hamilton wasn't racing Bottas would be the WDC, assuming his race partner isn't better.

The Bottas hate makes me laugh, "he's useless and boring". Doesn't really matter what the audience thinks, if merc thought he didn't deliver exactly what they needed, they'd have dropped him long ago. Ergo, he's decent.

l Far better to get the succession in order first than hope they can manage to wrangle someone decent into post.
But there's a lot of decent drivers to pick from, it's hardly like they'd struggle to entice any driver into the fastest car on the track now would they? Russell is testament to the fact that all they need is a decent driver in the seat and they're winning the constructors again.

Hardly. Russell is a testament to how much difference a top tier driver makes compared to a merely good one.

Worth watching the replays in the post race show. It's clearly true that Max could have avoided the gravel by backing out, but the point where he would have needed to have done that is way back, by the time he would have had a decent view as to how it's panning out he's already committed to going wide. I'm sticking with the view that it's unrealistic to think Max should have known to do that. His view of the accident, remember, is extremely limited and he does well just to avoid contact, IMO.
I don't know the figure but I do believe that Max Verstappen has had quite a few "mishaps" on opening laps over his F1 career. Patience is not his strong point.

I believe that it was the Professor who said that "To finish first, first you have to finish." ;)

Do we think George Russell to Mercedes would be a good idea?

I mean I'd love to see him on the podium every week, but he would always be a no.2 driver against Hamilton, and the chances of beating him would be slim.

I also think Mercedes might be coming towards the end of their dominance with the new regs. They can't stay on top forever and sooner or later they will be matched/beaten.

Hamilton will retire eventually - even if George has a couple of seasons as a no.2 driver, then it gets him established within the team and ready to be the no.1 driver when that day comes.

Even if Mercedes do struggle with the new regs, it surely is still a better option that remaining at Williams

I imagine people had similar thoughts about Hamilton when he joined Mclaren with Alonso.
It's not the same, as George is not a complete rookie but anything could happen.
Hamilton is getting older, so worst case is George could learn from him and best case, he beats him.

If I was merc I'd keep Bottas for 2021. They don't need Russell.
But if they want him they need to sign him now for 2022. Otherwise someone else will.

Bottas works for Mercedes now. They don't need two Hamiltons. In fact that might be detrimental
But they could easily get caught with thier pants down if they wait too long

I feel sorry for Bottas. He's a place holder, nothing more.. Then I remember he's driving the best f1 car, getting paid loads, and even just in F1.. I no longer feel sorry for him!

He would gain experience while Hamilton finishes his stint. He would also ensure more 1-2 finishes than Bottas currently manages.

My thought often too.
