Many graduate jobs don't really pay 30k at all. Lots that I've been looking at have been in the low 20's.
The only ones I've seen that pay 30k+ straight away are training contracted solicitors in london. (I'm sure there are more in other sectors, but I've not seen them)

Consultancy firms tend to pay 30k+ and Banks obv pay much higher

plenty of software firms pay 30+ too - last year's grad scheme at the place I work ranged from 32-37k or so depending on whether they had a master's or went to a top school etc..

Post-my-graduation a large number of schemes were cut in the architectural industry, and post RIBA Part 1 students were certainly no-where near receiving ~£30k.

Wages are about £5-6k greater for london placements but I imagine that's normal cross-industries.

I setup my own business post graduation which is not yet making profits of £30k/annum, but I have further studies to complete before I reach the end of my educational path and are certainly financially comfortable enough to enjoy life at the moment.

As long as one is comfortable then that'll do for the time being :) Nothing one can buy is worth getting too stressed over ;)

I graduated in 2006 and tried to get into the City with my Comp Sci 2:1 degree, but to be honest during the degree i lost interested and was more into analytics and what not - I actually stayed at Lloyds where i worked in a call centre and tried to move about

2006 - 14K
2007 - 17K
2008 - 19K
2009 (April) - 33K

I worked my way through the ranks and now a manager for an analytical team in the Fraud Department - not really used anything to do with my degree and although I loved Uni it does make me wonder if it was worth the debt considering I have worked my way up where I already was!

:)

You have your whole life to tie yourself down like that, why the rush

True, but love hits different people at different times. I met Dawn when I was 16. We lived together from the age of 18, and got married at 21.

Some people wouldnt be ready for all that at such a young age but we were.

Lots of stuff I didnt get to do ie have a one night stand... but I wouldnt change it for the world. I love my wife and kids.

pretty much any nursing / allied health professional graduate (of whom there must be at least thousands each year) will start on the bottom of band 5 (~£20k)

who are these graduates earning double that (to make the averages up) and why wasn't I one of them?!

my husband didn't go to uni, now earns more than I do, and has a projected achievable salary that will be greater than mine ever will!

not that I'm complaining, job security, great sickness / maternity cover, and excellent pensions - it's not all about the initial £££s!

I've just turned 25 and currently on 22k, although I have access to overtime which would pay about £75 extra a day. Finished Uni about 2 years ago and feeling a little underpaid if I'm honest :(

Wow seeing some of the salaries here and the progression rate really hits home that I need to move out of my current company.

I started in September 2007 on a Graduate scheme on around £23.5K and over the course of two years I've received one pay rise of £700 :( This is very disappointing considering I work for one of the so called leading multinationals in the IT sector and have received continually positive reviews. I kinda figured I was lucky to just keep a job and continue gaining experience but it seems like quite a few of you here have bucked the trend and received some good remuneration packages! The morale among all the graduates is incredibly low in our place at the moment.

From what I've seen the best salary prospects are in the Oil & Gas, Finance and Consulting areas. These are the industries where you'll get the best starting salaries and receive the quickest jumps to the next level. However, I would expect the competition is very fierce and the calibre of people working in these fields are pretty top notch. I was previously turned off by the prospect of working in Consulting when I first graduated but it is seeming all the more alluring now that my salary in industry is low by market standards.

I started out on 7.8k a year when I started in IT when I was 18 back in 2001. Full time. :)

Now I'm 26, I'm earning 33k (inc support payments) - no qualifications, just 8 years experiance.

started on £16.5k as a fresh graduate (accounting entry level job with training) that must have been about 22 I reckon.

now on more than triple that at 28,

these topics are always daft as it is so dependant on opportunites career paths, location, situation, degree of retardation of the canidate etc.

you'd be surprised on the staff quality,

we havesome special people and some Special people.... ;)

on the whole pay is pretty good but you do have to make significatnt lifestyle compromises as well

Depends on what you want.

Me..i see anything over £30,000 a year good.

It also varies significantly depending on where you are in the country of course, £30k in Glasgow is nothing to be sniffed at but earning the same amount in London is not likely to give you as comfortable a lifestyle by any stretch.

As for myself I recently started a graduate job and I'm earning enough to get by for the moment and I'll see where my career takes me.

Great stuff, what field is that in, may I ask? :)
