Samsung 226BW Bad Caps warning

Mine started doing this a while ago silly me left it and the 3 year warranty ran out 27/9/10.
Will let you know how i get on have a feeling though that they'll tell me to go take a running jump.

Just goes to show that I think they design these things to just last or slightly outlast the warranty's.

I had my 226bw replaced this summer (1 day out of warranty) due to a squealing noise when on standby and the screen took a few mins to turn on, they picked up the screen and repaired it had no problems since (just wish they took out the little bugs stuck inside).

Yea they've told me no go 1 month outside the warranty.

Ah well wont be buying any samsung products ever again, I own a 5 year old cheapo acer monitor that's still perfectly fine.

Cant be bothered chasing this up under sales of goods act but lesson learnt really wont be buying samsung ever again.

That high st shop dont seem to sell the caps needed or do they ? could anyone tell me what I should be buying from there ? I can figure out what to get from that site but thought I'd get them along with a soldering iron from the shop.

Whats the minimum soldering iron wattage for a job like this or whats the preferable wattage would you say ?

The repair for this is an absolute doddle, so long as you are any way decent at soldering, you will be fine.

BTW, mine is a 206BW, same screen only 2" smaller, so this should help... http://normsweb.com/tektips/sam206bw.shtml

Give me 2 ticks and I will link you to the caps I got off eBay...

EDIT - here you go, items 120524889933 and 120544294829, both from the same seller.

thanks think i'll get them from farnell though they seem more trustworthy and cheaper

Lost 3 caps on my 3 year old viewsonic vx922, working fine after replacing them now though.

5 year old viewsonic vx724 still going strong.

If you choose to replace the caps, you can use it as an opportunity to put some decent quality caps in... Good brand to go for are Nichicon/Rubycon, Panasonic and Vishay.
Well it will backfire on them as I wont be buying Samsung products after this and i'm sure a few others will do the same

What monitor brands use quality componants?

Dell monitors aren't bad, but it depends on the model. Even so, many better quality caps can fail after 10 years or so, but having them fail in less than 3 years is bad really, still it does look like cheap and nasty caps have been used here...

Yea i am going for the panasonic this screens still better than 99% of tn screens out there.

Bookmarked this thread in case I need it. Been running an "S" 226BW for about 2 and a half years now, so you know if it's going to go it'll go sometime soon!

Cheers for the cap info, most handy. :)

Yep, it also says

"CAPACITOR, RADIAL, 1000UF, 6.3V
Capacitor Dielectric Type:Aluminium Electrolytic
Capacitance:1000µF
Capacitance Tolerance:± 20%
Voltage Rating:6.3V DC
Series:FM" <==

In the description. The FC series is very good also, but FM is pretty much the best you can get for power supply circuits as the have a low ESR meaning your power supply should be more efficient and perform better with FM series caps. :)

Almost anything should be better than those CapXon caps pictured above... They are the cap equivalent of Hiper of Qtek! :D

Got a Samsung SM245B+ here which I've had since October 2008, wondering how much longer it's going to last... Think if I did resell it now I should get a decent price for it as it's still in decent condition and it's a 1920 x 1200 screen.

My 2 viewsonic screens are waiting for the tip outside, as I cant replace the caps myself, I did try tho.

Are the PCB's still ok? If so you may be able to put them on e-bay as spares/repairs?

How long is a piece of string? There's no real way to know for sure how long the caps will last, they may have used different caps in your newer screen but it's hard to know how lucky or unlucky you are until it goes wrong really...

My 225BW had been having power up issues for over a year now and finally refused to turn on a few weeks back, ordered some caps from ebay and repaired it, as per usual these were the bad ones:

Only replaced the three blown ones, it's easy enough to crack open and change others if they go at a later date.
