Hi i just ordered the above to use as a cache drive in my unraid set up, is there any known problems with this drive out there ?
Thanks

There is a thread on techpowerup and some on reddit with some issues.

Drives manufactured early to mid 2021 seem to be problematic, unknown if fixed as Samsung have not commented.

Thanks will head over for a look, only bought it as the price has dropped down and i jumped in without searching first

I bought my 4TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD back in april 2021 and have notice no problems at all with it yet :)

But i don't use it in a raid setup, it used mainly as my gamepass/steam games/etc game drive

Thanks for the reply, not really a raid set up it just caches file transfers

I'd avoid them, as said above we don't know if the newer drives have been fixed and it doesn't matter how the drive is used, they can start to die when are just for desktop use with only a few TB written.

That said, if your drive has 0 errors and has 5-10+TB written, it is probably not one of the broken ones, but if you choose to keep it be prepared to rma.

Thats the scary part, no real usage pattern has been identified, they just seem to start bailing out with no warning, I would try to find an 860 EVO if possible.

looks like after i have tested it i will pair it up with a cx500 to run them together for a while just in case

I've had 10 Samsung Evo 870 4TB die after about 6 months use, with written data on them varying from 10TB to 20TB.

I have 5 being RMA'ed at the moment with another 2 to have RMA'ed once these are back, I'll no longer buy these drives and ive started to replace them with WD RED 4TB drives.

I've got one from January 2021. Have a look at its CrystalDiskInfo report and see it it inspires confidence.

@Snapshot thats going bad :(, RMA it, and backup your data.

Quite light usage as well, what on earth have Samsung done.

Evidence for RMA, run the full LBA scan in samsung magician, it will very likely give you some errors with the stats you have posted here, screenshot it and attach to RMA.

If you load up Samsung Magician, you may find its shows "Critial" on the "Uncorrectable Error Count" and "ECC Error Rate". Ive found with these drive, if you do a quick SMART scan its all works fine, if you run a Extended test it will mark the drive as failing on the LBA's

Mine arrived back at Samsung today in the Netherland, lets see how quick they are to get the replaced even though its taken them two weeks so far.

A quick heads up they seem to be having a issue with Outlook.com emails with sending out RMA's, as I had to chase them a number of times and was told that over the phone.

@chrcoluk and @RSR Thanks for the suggestions. I ran the full LBA scan and extended SMART test which both came up clean! Although the LBA scan took nine hours instead of 80 minutes and there are a lot of errors in the log. I'm going to have another go soon and keep an eye on it.

Interesting, it looks like the ECC is just about scraping it through the test (extended delayed reads that are successful are likely error correction working overtime it get it done).

Do any of the stats show up as critical like it did for RSR?

No, the stats aren't shown at all after the SMART test. The log (which doesn't seem to be saved anywhere) just shows three lines saying it completed okay. There may be something to show more data but I couldn't find it.

I just started a RMA for my 870 4tb Evo. Lost quite a few files, not happy. brought it direct from Samsung in Feb 2021 and only 11tb written.

anyone know if they will replace it with a brand new 870 evo, not rma'ed anything before?
